Thimble would walk inside his new store, refurbished, painted, and well.
Lacking.
Maybe he had an unreasonable expectation, but this store just didn't ring right with him. It was smaller then he hoped, much less welcoming then he hoped, and hell, even the things they were selling were less than he hoped. "Ruff." Thimble would announce, turning to the giant humonguloid that sat behind the desk, "Huh?" He'd murmur, lost in his own mind, "Ruff, why do these look this way, I thought we got newer models then this." He'd reach, grabbing something from the shelf and inspecting it, searching inside the parts, "We couldn't afford a batch of the advanced ones." He'd shrug, before continuing "I think you're keeping your expectations a little too high." Ruff would say dully, Thimble would huff out, before putting the gadget back and rolling his shoulders.
"Well I suppose this isn't the worst thing that could have happened, I mean, I'm just glad that this worked out at all." Thimble would say, looking for the positives in this situation as he moved on, looking at another thing before setting it down, "See, think nice, see nice." Ruff would say grinning, before returning to idly scratching as his chin, "Alright, well, let's open this thing up." He'd smirk, going to the door and unlocking it, "Store's open, come on in." He'd announce to anyone who was listening.
Demalia found herself walking throughout the streets of the capital. She found herself doing this a lot lately, whenever she wasn’t tinkering away in her lab. It helped to clear her thoughts. Sometimes she would go to a quiet place where she could relax and reflect on things. Other times she went exploring the city. It depended on how she was feeling. The loud noises of people and hover cars flying about helped distracted her from unpleasant things in her head. It was good when she really needed to get certain things out of her mind in a hurry.
<This has been a uphill endeavor so far. Balancing everything out has been harder than I imagined. Not to mention the panic attacks…. I might need to see a doctor about that.>
Demalia suddenly came across a store she had never seen before. It appeared to be selling mechanical items, among other things. Demalia figured that she might as well check it out. She walked through the door, stopping in the doorway as she saw a familiar face. It didn’t take her long to piece things together.
“Well, you don’t waste any time, do you Thimble? You've set up your own store this shortly after coming to this planet. The beginning of your entrepreneurship no doubt. And who is this? An employee I'd wager. I'm really impressed: you got yourself some resources really quickly."
Demalia was now eyeing the Humonguloid that was sitting at a desk. Even sitting down he towered over her. In the past, she would have been a little bit intimidated and nervous being in close proximity to someone his size. Getting stronger had changed her perception of things a bit though. Regardless, this was a pleasant surprise that she didn’t expect to happen. She never thought she’d run into a store owned by the Goburian hybrid.
He'd wait by the front of the door, idly tapping his feet before he noticed someone, a familiar face, "Demalia!" He'd state, breaking into a smile, it was good to see them here, especially because there wasn't many people he liked, or even trusted here. "Demalia, come on in!" He'd wave his arm in invitingly, listening to her speak.
"Yep." He'd say, dusting off his hands as he went inside, "It's a pretty long story of how I got the place, but it can be narrowed down to, someone had to sell their shop." He'd smirk, checking around and investigating, "I've only really been in it today." Thimble would look over and point to the Humonguloid, "That's Ruff, he's technically the clerk, but really, he's the muscle, his power level is actually around eleven times my own." He'd chuckle, being amazed by the statistic alone.
"While as much as I'd like to try and convince you to spend a little bit of your money here, there isn't much things in stock, other then these outdated Scouters." He'd chuckle, before examining them once more with a bit of despair, well, it came quick and cheap, he shouldn't expect quality.
Demalia couldn't help but return Thimble's smile. Running into him again was a very pleasant surprise. She had regretted not asking for his contact information when she had the chance, although now it looked like she would get many opportunities to talk with him.
"I won't be leaving this shop right away. Why don't you give me a condensed version of how you got this place? It's only a small shop right now, but it's a pretty impressive place considering where you were when we first met. Where did you get the cash to get all of this set up? Cause this is really amazing! To have come here and gotten this all set up quickly. It still has room for improvement but still, this start is much better than I expected you to be able to do with the resources you had."
Demalia then walked over to Ruff slowly, looking up at him warily. Demalia had become strong, although this guy just towered above her and looked very strong. She figured it would be rude to just take out her scouter out just to see how strong he was. So she gave him a nervous smile and held out her hand timidly.
“Um…. hi Mr.Ruff. I’m Demalia. You’re lucky to work for someone like Thimble. He’s really… nice. It's also nice to meet you..."
The Tuffle hybrid’s hand was trembling slightly. Interacting with someone this much bigger than her put her on edge. It reminded her of that fateful day where she had her parents taken from her right before her eyes. It was a trauma that likely would never completely go away.
Thimble would look over to Demalia with a content smile, it was good knowing that his effort wasn't ignored, he'd open his mouth and begin to explain, "Well, I could leave out all the in-betweens but sure, let me tell you." He'd take a deep breath before leaning on a wall and continuing to speak. "First off, this place used to be a bakery, apparently the man was falling on some hard times and needed to start selling to, you know, get out of those hard times." He'd shrug, finding some difficulty in explaining it precisely, "So I got into contact with him, I did feel kind of bad but I managed to bargain him down to a price that I could afford, from then on I got my savings and bought the place, I mean, there was a lot of paper work and a lot of legal stuff but I doubt that'd make for an interesting story. And I imagine once I get this place running, it'll make up the savings I lost in buying it." He'd give a slight chuckle.
Ruff would notice Demalia coming closer to him, Ruff didn't seem to have any interest in Demalia, he just kept a glazed expression as they watched her strut on over, not even showing a hint that he was acknowledging her presence until she began to speak. Once she finished her introduction he'd give a hearty exhale and stretch out a hand to shake hers. Upon closer inspection of the Humonguloid shopkeeper many of his features that were hard to notice from a bit away would become very noticeable, a wrinkled and worn face, his portions being very forehead heavy, a large greying mustache that stretched across his lips, and very, very tired eyes. He'd open up his mouth and very surprisingly speak in a quite happy tune, "Pleasure to meet you, Ms. Demalia."
Demalia’s fears were mostly put to rest the moment he shook her hand and returned her greeting. He seemed like a nice enough guy and wasn’t nearly as intimidating as he was at first glance. Granted his size was still a bit intimidating, but it wasn’t making her want to crawl into the nearest hiding space available like it did earlier. She gave him a more cheerful, albeit still nervous smile.
“It’s nice to meet you um…Ruff. If that’s alright with you, I’ll just call you Ruff to make things simpler.”
Demalia then withdrew her hand, going back to explore the shop that Thimble had managed to purchase. She eyed the shelves curiously, scanning them to see if she could find anything that she could use.
“I‘m a little sad that there’s one less bakery in the world. They’re pretty nice places to visit. I like relaxing their and having a good cup of Coffee and a pastry. They smell delicious too. Still, at least the baker managed to sell it off to you. They’re handling themselves well hopefully. You got this place out of it too. Do you intend on modernizing your inventory fully once you get the assets required for it?”
Ruff would continue with a warm welcoming smile, "I've been called many things over my life, I certainly don't mind being called by my own name." He'd chuckle slightly, his wrinkled features only becoming more noticeable with his laughter. Thimble would smile himself, "Well it looks like things are going fine over here."
Thimble would walk over to Demalia in response to her leaving Ruff to tour the store. When she began to speak he'd edge a bit closer, listening as she spoke. "True, I must say, it's something about bakeries that just has such a homely appeal to it." He'd shrug, sighing out, "I heard the Baker is doing fine if it's reassuring and well, as you said, I did get this shop out of it." He'd smile, looking around... Hiding his frown as he realized just how small it actually was, "As soon as I can afford it, this place will be a technological wonderland, in fact I even began reading some of machinery-related manuals we bought, I'm no expert but I'm learning."
He'd look back to Demalia, a memory suddenly bursting in his mind, "Oh! I almost forgot to do something." He'd smile, face-palming, "I actually got some desserts from the baker, they're nothing too special but I was thinking of giving you one. He gave me too much for just one person anyways." He'd walk into a backroom, coming out soon after with a box full of things that looked like dough balls with powdered sugar on them, "I forget what he called them but they're very good, if you like them feel free to take the whole box." “It isn’t a weird name by any means. Although even if it was strange you shouldn’t be ashamed of your own name.”
So far her trip into this shop had turned out most pleasant. True she likely wasn’t going to get anything, but sometimes just browsing was enjoyable in itself. Especially when it was in a store owned by a friendly acquaintance. Demalia’s finger reached up and tapped her chin, a thoughtful look on her face as she walked around the store.
“Well that’s a relief. I’m glad to hear that he’s doing well. Especially considering that his business was struggling to make a profit. That was very thoughtful of you, making sure he got a good deal out the transaction. Hopefully it will pan out for you eventually. Educating yourself on how your products work is a good start to things. Eventually you’re going to have to hire people who know how to build technology though.”
Demalia walked over to a shelf at the far end, reaching out and gingerly grasping a scouter. She turned it in her hand, delicately examining the older model of a commonly used electronic.
“You seem to be at your best when dealing with the business and financial side of things, so you should mainly stick to your strong suit. Not to say that you’re horrible with technology, but um… you should stick to your strengths… waaaaah!”
Demalia’s fingers slipped off the scouter, sending it falling towards the ground. she reached down, juggling it in the air as she tried to get a good holding on it, she let out a small squeak as she clasped both of her hands together. She managed to catch it before it hit the ground, and without breaking it too! Demalia closed her eyes, her body tilting forward as she let out a sigh of relief. She opened her eyes and placed the scouter back on the shelf. A pleasant aroma reached the hybrid’s nose. She turned to find that the Goburin hybrid had brought out a box of pastries. Demalia walked over, her surprise clearly written all over her face.
“Oh! Um…. are you sure that’s alright? He left that entire box of pastries to you. I mean, this is very kind of you, but… they’re yours.”
Despite her kind words, it was clear that she wanted at least some of those pastries. The Tuffle hybrid licked her lips briefly. That was immediately followed by guilt spreading across her face. The truth was while she did make sure to not overindulge in things that were bad for her, she was very fond of pastries. They were delicious and convenient for her to eat in the morning, or while she was doing the less exciting aspects of her lab work. She felt bad for even thinking about accepting his offer, but it was a very tempting prospect.
