The boy laughed at him, and Baalbatos was not quite sure how to take it. Of course, thought the demon, the boy was likely not being malicious. No, the boy probably did not even know how to be malicious. Baalbatos did not think it to be in the young Earthling's nature. But it was not in the demon's nature to take being teased well. He, like the Saiyans, had a certain pride, and he did not like to have it wounded. More a fraction of a second, a frown sprouted on his face, but he quickly corrected it to a smile. No, he thought, not now. Now would not be the time for him to upset the boy. Especially when the two were getting on so swimmingly at the moment.
Baalbatos paused a moment and listened to the conversation unfold. The Namekian seemed to understand what was going on well enough. Of course, he very well should, given how he had beamed himself into the brain of the young man, and managed to get himself astral-y projected within the room. Just what had the demon gotten himself into? These Earth rituals, he thought, how very strange that they were. He almost felt as if he were intruding on this moment, like he should not be here. It seemed like a moment meant only those with some special connection to this place. But it was not as if not belonging had ever stopped him from going somewhere before. No, the demon thrived on doing as he pleased.
The boy left, and Baalbatos followed after him. He was not going to miss a second of this, no, not after he had accompanied the boy all the way up the tower in the first place. Baalbatos liked to see things through to the end. They eventually came to the upper chamber, and the spirit of the small white cat manifested itself once again. It spoke of a final test, of holy water, of testing the purity of the boy's heart. Well, thought the man with the demonic heart, he already knew the answer to that one. He suspected the boy would pass with flying colors. Or, maybe, the boy had been hiding his truly insidious nature all along and the water would choke him to death. Now, he thought with a slight grin, that would be quite the turn of events. Of course, he would rather that that not happen, but black humor had always appealed to the demon.
The boy was eager to prove himself to the cat and the slugman. He practically begged for the water, and it was almost as if he were eager to potentially end his life. Well, he thought, one either died old or bold. Hopefully, the boy would make it to be the former. But for now, they would just have to wait on the Namekian's permission. Suddenly, Baalbatos cleared his throat and spoke, "I say give it to him. He clearly wants it badly enough."
The demon coughed. "Not that I have any say in the matter, I suppose," added Baalbatos.
Arion watched the exchange between Galen and Baalbatos curiously, the two seemed to know each other indeed, at least he knew he could have trusted him. It was difficult to tell a stranger’s identity from such a distance, after all, he was still on Namek while his astral projection was standing right there in front of them. “He’s not Human, but nor am I. As much as I’d prefer to trust him on behalf of Galen, I don’t even know this man’s name. I guess I’ll have to keep an eye on him in case he stays around this place once I am back on Earth. But he seems to behave so far.” - he thought to himself, shrugging the matter off shortly after.
Then, he joined Galen and Baalbatos and followed them to the second floor, it was a really humble place but one could enjoy a truly spectacular sight from there. It was even better than the one on the Lookout considering how far away was the sacred temple from the sea level-- he could watch everything from above but not everyone could make use of such ability.
“Now that I think about it... I think only Kami-sama and I have shown competence in the Far-Seeing Arts. I wonder if there’s someone else who can use them.. the four Kais, Grand Kai and Supreme Kais aside, I’ve never heard of anyone else using it.” - he thought to himself. Just like Obsidia told them that time on the Lookout, the Kais apparently watched the world from above and that is how they knew of the dark power of the evil wizard.
He set his eyes on Korin and listened to the white cat, who stood near a water fountain as he told Galen about the Sacred Holy Water. It was a truly miraculous water capable of cleansing traces of evil from the good essences and root out the darkness from an individual, although such had a cost; the person’s life. He could still remember the day he took that very same trial to become Kami’s assistant and the water's taste... which, to be honest, was rather disgusting.
His eyes shifted from the white cat to the human as he was asked to take the ultimate decision; whether Galen should have taken the trial or not. Even the demon man gave his own opinion on the matter, which Arion replied to shortly after. “It is not a matter of wanting something very badly, my friend. The water itself is not important but the meaning behind it; life or death-- honesty or lie.” - he paused briefly before he shifted his gaze at Galen.
“The Holy Water can not be misled, as an evil being has no ways to resist from its effects. For an individual to drink it, he must be sure and honest with himself. Even fear may be misleading. As such, not everyone is capable of drinking the water and survive, only a few are fit for such an achievement; and I believe you’re among them, Galen.” - he told him with a smile on his face.
“Go ahead and drink the water. I grant you my permission.”
Baalbatos supported his decision to drink the water and Galen nodded to him in thanks. He appreciated that the demon was standing by his side. Galen knew well enough the responsibility he was choosing to burden as well as the risk, but he wasn’t afraid in the slightest, and now the decision was on Arion’s hands, and he quickly stared back at the Kami Assistant, hoping that he would agree and allow him to go through the ultimate trial, a trial no one could fake. Arion began by explaining that the Sacred Holy Water had a meaning: life or death, honesty or lie and the human swordsman nodded in agreement, signing he understood that. He continued to explain that there was no way to trick the water and evil couldn’t resist it, but he also said that he believed Galen could survive it, and the boy giggled, blushing a lot with the compliment.
– I will do it! – he said, before Arion finally gave him his blessing. Then, Master Korin stepped aside from the water fountain and allowed the boy to walk towards it. Galen approached it and cupped a bunch of water with his bare hands, not hesitating for a single second and drinking it quickly. Once he finished it, he turned around to stare at them and smiled. – It’s not so bad! – he said in a honest tone, but then it hit him. Galen paused and then he felt almost like he was choking. Sparkles of yellow lightning hit his body hard, and started arcing for a second, before he fell to his knees, groaning loudly, and touching his neck. ”W-what?! It burns!!!” he realized, impressed he was suffering so much with the water.
– AAAHHHHH!!!! – he began screaming out loud, but, not even for a second, Galen doubted the good in his heart, but then, just as sudden as it hit him, it stopped and he exhaled deeply. Then, he looked at his two hands and then stared at the people around him again, with a sort of clueless expression on his face. He didn’t feel any different at all, other than the previous discomfort. - Weird... I don't feel stronger at all... - he said, still unable to feel the difference in his power the others already could.
[Sacred Holy Water. New Power Level: 73,430]
Then, another thing hit him. – Wait… I… I know! Know I know what I have to do! This much clearance! It’s amazing! Thank you Master Korin, thank you Master Arion! – and serenity touched his expression as he got up. The cat spirit chuckled a bit and nodded, before vanishing from that plane. Galen already knew what he had to do and there was no need for him to stay there anymore, he had successfully passed down the torch.
The astral Namekian chipped in and explained that the water was not a matter of wanting it badly enough, but a matter of life or death, a matter of honestly or deceit. Baalbatos nodded, feigning understanding, but in truth, he did not particularly care for the matter. It was water, he thought to himself, he supposed it could be akin to the waters of Makaii, but he did not really care. Even if what they were saying were true, it seemed obvious to Baalbatos that the boy would be just fine. They were worrying for nothing, in his mind, and simply delaying the matter further.
But finally, the Namekian gave his permission and Baalbatos gave a sigh of relief. About time, he thought, he had been starting to lose his patience with the matter. He wanted to get this show on the road, see what all this prancing about and spirit talk was really about. Finally, the boy began to drink.
In a second, the boy let out a terrible scream and Baalbatos stepped forward, ready to try his healing magicks on the boy, but he stopped just as quickly as he had began. Suddenly, Baalbatos was aware that the boy had gained a new level of strength, some hidden power. Damn, thought Baalbatos, it seemed that they were not lying about the powers of this holy water after all.
The boy spoke of it suddenly being clear, that he knew what he had to do. Baalbatos arched an eyebrow in curiosity and looked at the boy. So, he thought, that was it? Just like that and the boy had become the towerkeeper that he had sought to become? There was no training, no grand ceremony? Just the mere matter of drinking some water and that was all well and good? Baalbatos shrugged. Whatever worked for them.
"So," said the demon, "You're alright? And you've... done it? Are you this so called towerkeeper now?"
The demon seemed to listen to the green man’s words even if the latter one couldn’t tell if he was actually giving them much importance, but in the end he was speaking majorly for Galen’s sake. He wanted the kid to be aware of his actions beforehand, a person’s mind could as well change at any moment and he wanted to make sure that the swordsman knew what he was about to do and what he would have had to deal with in the future after the torch would be passed down to him.
Galen seemed to understand that and such made Arion crack a smile, watching him as he walked up to the fountain and drank it down. The Earthling didn’t seem to have that much of an issue, actually almost as if he liked it. Unfortunately, the Namekian knew pretty well what was to come next; an unbearable pain. He remembered his own experience rather well after he became the Lookout’s caretaker and was guided by a presence into a dark room where the Holy Water was stored. The moment Arion gulped it down, he was already aching onto his knees… it felt like a Déjà vu.
He watched Galen repeating the same experience, blinking slowly as he watched him with a firm expression. “I admit the water tends to hit you when you don’t expect it. But you must resist, there’s nothing to be afraid of as long as you believe in yourself!” - he told him. It didn’t last that long and shortly after the human swordsman seemed to be fine… or rather, even better than ever. Arion could pick up on his aura; he was stronger, more than Arion in his base power. “Are you entirely sure?” - he asked, smirking slightly.
And there it hit him, he could imagine how Galen felt but most important was his trial that was finally completed. There was no more for him to face, he was finally worthy of fulfilling the Towerkeeper role and furthermore, Korin suddenly vanished, causing Arion to smile. “He can finally rest in peace I suppose. It was about time that someone took care of this place as it deserves. This is probably one of the most ancient buildings on this planet, who knows… probably older than the Lookout itself. But how would we know?” - he said, chuckling a bit.
The slug man walked up to the edge, looking down as he admired the blue marble once more. “Such a wonderful planet… I’m glad I’ve come here time ago, even if I am not here currently. It’s really a pleasure for me to see it once more, but even better is the sight of my friends going forward just like everyone should be doing after what happened.” - he spoke up, feeling somewhat nostalgic before he set his eyes on Galen once more.
“I wish you good luck, Galen. You’ll need it as now you have more responsibilities upon your shoulders. I only request you to be careful… I’m not sure when I’ll be back. I’m far away, on Planet Namek to learn the ancient Dragon Clan Martial Arts and achieve a new strength. Keep an eye and see if you catch a glimpse of anyone suspicious flying up to the Lookout, both Kami-sama and I are absent for now but hopefully she’ll be back soon enough.” - he paused briefly, looking at his own hands only to notice they were vanishing.
“I’ll always keep an eye on this planet in my absence, but for now, it seems that my time has finished. While I can speak with you telepathically, it’s difficult since I am on a distant planet while Korin-sama was the one to project me here. A truly fascinating ability, but I am nothing more than an image. I can’t even use my Far-Seeing Arts to watch the earthlings from above in this form. I’d like to stay here for a bit more… Unfortunately, I can’t keep this up. I have no knowledge of this technique even if perhaps I’d look into it in the future.” - he said, letting out a faint chuckle at his own last statement.
He looked at the two once more, his body vanishing as he spoke up his last words. “I hope to meet you both sooner or later, or at least as soon as I’ll be back on Earth. Take care, Galen. I’m sure you’ll do a good job as the Towerkeeper.”
In the meanwhile on Planet Namek…
Arion opened his eyes and stood up, smiling slightly as he stared at the sky until Helix landed onto the ground, standing next to him. “Hey, you seem thoughtful. What’s up?” - he asked with mild interest.
“Nothing really. I was just giving my telepathic abilities a try.” - he replied. Helix was oblivious to what sort of attempt he meant but he nodded and grinned. “Sounds good. Come on then, let’s continue with our training.” - he told him. The Dragon Clansman nodded in agreement, offering a smirk as both took off and flew away.
Galen nodded when Baalbatos asked him if he was the towerkeeper now, confirming that fact. – I am. And I know exactly what I need to do now. The water… It expanded my mind like never before! – he said, giggling a bit as he sailed through his new streams of thoughts, with so many answers to so many questions he had for years and even answers for questions he had never even asked. Once he spoke to Baalbatos, though, he turned his face to Arion, who began to speak again, referring to the spirit of the old towerkeeper. He did deserve a rest, and now his spirit could finally do it as Galen would definitely do his very best to be worthy the position and continue his work. Then, when he started saying that this place was probably older than the Lookout, he nodded again, with that clarity kicking in to aid his knowledge.
– Indeed it is, Master Arion. This place is the base in which the Lookout was build. And this place as build by none other than the humans themselves. We are a weak race on a first look, but we are also capable of wonders! – he said in a kind and proud tone. He was glad that the humans also had their place in the marvelous accomplishments of this world. When Arion mentioned the sight, Galen walked near the edge of the place and stared down to the Korin’s Holy Grounds and that made him giggle again, amused by the beauty of the woods. – This planet is truly a jewel. I will look after it. – he started and then was interrupted by Arion explaining that he would take a while to come back because of his goal and that, without Kami, he had to look after not only the tower, but the Timeless Lookout too. Galen nodded in agreement. – Worry not. I will. – he simply and humbly said.
– Trust me, Master Arion. Focus on your training and return! I will do everything in my power to keep it safe. – he added, chuckling a bit as the spiritual projection of Arion faded away. Once he fully vanished, Galen sighed, slightly saddened that the namekian truly had to go, but he had no time to be sad. Then, he turned around to see Baalbatos and chuckled. – So… Still interested in see a senzu bean? I will grow them right now! – he said, and then, without waiting for Baalbatos to even answer, he ran down the stairs and back to the base of his new home. Once there, Galen, quickly picked up some grains and started placing them in the magical dirty and then sprinkled water from the same fountain he had drank himself. Like magic, a beanstalk sprouted and, with it, four small green beans were on it, which Galen quickly picked up and placed inside a small brown bag. Upon watching carefully, Baalbatos would be able to see that Galen had only put three of those beans inside the bag, while the final one was on his palm, the same palm he offered to the demon.
– Here, mister Baalbatos! This is a senzu bean! Take it, as a token of our friendship! Use it when your life is in danger and, maybe, you will be able to reclaim your land, if you wish so! – Galen used a quite gentle tone, and, although he was now capable of many wonders, he didn’t seem changed at all, at least personality-wise.
So, it seemed that these holy waters of the cat's had given the boy some new found understanding. How interesting, thought Baalbatos, that the waters could affect his mind in such ways. Usually, things only altered the minds of mortals when they were malicious in nature, like some kind of twisted magick. For a brief moment, Baalbatos considered the possibility that this was actually case and that the water had fried the brain of the young human. Baalbatos, for one, did not trust spirits, much less the spirit of a cat that told people to drink strange water, and the spirit of a Namekian that had to give permission. They'd tried to warn him off from the water, but could that have simply been a trap? Reverse psychology, he thought, people want what they cannot have. Even now as the Namekian faded out, Baalbatos did not trust him. No, he thought, do not trust what you cannot touch.
The boy asked if Baalbatos were still interested in the magical beans they had discussed earlier. Baalbatos grinned and nodded, speaking, "Well, of course! How could I not be? The little beans sound like condensed miracles, if I do say so myself."
Suddenly, the boy ran off to grow them. Again, he thought, that boy sure did not waste anytime. Baalbatos took off after the boy, albeit much more slowly than the boy himself. He walked calmly down the stairs, careful as he walked down them. For all his strength, he still did not want to slip and fall down the stairs. It might not kill him, or even hurt him, but it would still be rather embarrassing if he did.
By the time he reached the boy, Galen was already finishing the rearing of the beans. That, thought the demon, was some pretty quick farming. Maybe Galen really was meant for this, to have already grown the beans this quickly. He offered one of the beans to Baalbatos, as a token of 'friendship'. Well, thought the demon, he was not quite sure about that, but he'd gladly accept the bean anyways. He carefully plucked the bean out of the boy's hand and carefully set it in one of the inner pockets of his cloak. He gave the boy the biggest smile he had.
"Thank you, Galen," said Baalbatos, "I greatly appreciate this token you've given me. I'll use it well, and hopefully it can help me in my time of need."
With that, Baalbatos stepped back from the boy and offered him a small bow. "Well," finally said the demon, "I suppose you'll be rather busy now, what with this new occupation of yours and all. I won't keep you from your business much longer. No, first, let me congratulate you on your success, Galen. It was an interesting experience for me, at least, and I'm glad you could manage it. So, congratulations. Just be careful about drinking strange liquids from now on, though. Usually that leads to some trouble."
Baalbatos grinned. "Well," sighed the demon, "Goodbye. See you around, Galen."
And with that, Baalbatos stepped back from the boy and made his way out of the tower, leaving him behind.
(Thread exit! Acquired senzu bean! I'll take zeni for this, please! Good thread, guys! Congrats, Galen!)
Galen was happy that Baalbatos was still interested in the senzu bean and once he gave it to him, he thanked the human swordsman and he chuckled a bit, nodding a bit. Also, due to that clearance of mind, he managed to finally learn another useful skill that he was now putting into use: the ability to suppress one’s energy signature and, because of that, he lowered his power level to that of a regular human being.
[Ki Suppression Learned. Current Power Level: 5]
Once he did that, he chuckled again as Baalbatos said that he would use it well. – I’m sure you will, and I’ve also put some thought into what you’ve said and now I will try to keep my energy suppressed so I don’t end up attracting trouble to this holy place. The water also taught me how do to that and… Honestly! I’m ashamed! It was quite simple and, yet, I couldn’t do it! Hehehe! – he admitted, blushing a bit at his own lack of skill. After that, it was time to bid farewell, and Galen waved at his demon friend. – Godspeed, mister Baalbatos! We will see each other again sometime! – he said, and, as the demon left, he finally sighed, with his expression becoming much more serious, as he sensed some terrible energies gathering nearby, with the fall of the night.
”All of those powers… They are far beyond my own… But… I can’t stay idle while the Earth is at risk, especially now that Kami and Mister Arion are away. I will use it and head there immediately.” and, with that thought in mind, Galen used his power as the towerkeeper to summon a very large golden cloud nearby. Once it came, he approached it with a gentle smile. – Noble giant flying cloud, please lend me a bit of your power. I will take a piece of you and use it, but I assure you it’s with goodness in my heart! – and as he said that, Galen took a small piece of the giant cloud, getting his own Flying Nimbus, in which he immediately jumped onto it.
– Flying Nimbus! Let’s go to the citadel! We need to protect this world! – and, as an answer to his words, the nimbus flew immediately towards the place, leaving a golden trail behind it. It wasn’t as fast as Galen would be if he flew there right away, but, at least, it allowed him to save up his energy so that he could fight with all his power.
