Yaban "..."
|
Personality
Being a mercenary by heart, Yaban is mostly known as a brutal man with very little moral compass when in combat or on a mission. When sent to do something that to many would seem questionable, questions are rarely asked. All he cares about is how much he'll be paid after it is completed, and how fun the fighting will be when he gets there. Due to his savage combat style and aggression, he is typically hired for mercenary missions that have a heavy combat focus.
This is not to say that he is indiscriminately a killer, however. Whenever he isn't working, or he is around people he could consider an ally, he is a huge softie. He typically likes meeting new people and those he can grow some sort of bond with he typically gets protective of as a part of his pack so to speak. Due to this, missions that could lead to endangering those he actively cares about directly are typically turned down and those who asked him to do such a thing will actively be his enemy.
When in a group, he actively tries to take an equality role to whoever is the leader at the time. He doesn't like to mindlessly follow, but he doesn't fancy himself a very good leader either. As long as the person at the helm of any operation is intelligent and strong, he is okay sharing in aspiration with them. Should they try to use him or force him to do something to their liking over his own, then all bets are called off.

Backstory
Being born as a full-blooded member of the Heran race, right in the middle of a mercenary company, meant that Yaban's birthright as a mighty mercenary of Hera was destined from the start. While he didn't know much about his home planet, or if it even existed anymore since neither his parents nor those around him really brought it up, he still believed that his blood was connected to the Herans that came from it.
Yaban getting raised by a group of mercenaries that his parents were apart of, left the young Heran with a very fractured upbringing. Most of the time he was left by himself as his company went off to do a mission. Left to his own devices, the young warrior caused quite a storm at their base any time he got bored. Never was there a time where he wasn't a bloodthirsty, temperamental little brat with a will to fight and grow whenever he was left to his own devices.
As he grew more and more, however, his temperament slowly transitioned into what would make him known as a 'gentle giant' in his company, but only to them. Tall, strong, but soft to those he cared for and could consider a close ally. By the time he was in his middle teenage years, he was finally strong enough to join the company on missions to take a cut for himself. By that time everyone in the company could be considered a family member, not just those who had given him life. Every single member of his company, regardless of race, had equal say to him and soon enough he learned what it meant to be a mercenary.
With the life of a mercenary, came great sacrifice was something he would learn much later, though. Around the time he hit his early twenties, his mercenary company got blindsided by heavy losses in what would be a particularly dicey mission. They had faulty intel on what they would be up against. With every single member of his company that dropped cold, the odds would be pressed against them even further. Their numbers were cut down to a quarter of what they used to be in a matter of hours. It was hard to say if any others got away, as anybody that Yaban couldn't confirm dead with his own eyes, were never heard from again.
The few mercenaries who did escape alongside the Heran soon enough fizzled out of the company altogether seeing it as too much of a reminder of those they lost, with most of them leaving the mercenary lifestyle entirely. With no more allies, Yaban's work as a mercenary became a lot more confined. He mostly took up solo jobs, not working with others he interacted with unless he really got to know them. But most of the time mercenaries he met were just small-time interactions that would fizzle out with time. He was running solo, and while he missed what he considered as a family, his heart never faltered to stop his mercenary career. It was all he had left.
Many years passed, and that facade of the gentle giant would spread out to most people he met outside of his work. To many, he was just some Heran with a soft spot for conversation and a bit of drinking around bars. To the few who knew his actual lifestyle, he was a man who asked few questions and just really loved to crack a few bones on his way through his enemies.
This lifestyle followed him all the way to the current Age, with the Heran making his way to Planet Sadal where he would search for likeminded individuals who liked a good fight here and there. He knew he wasn't going to get work there as a combat merc, but it would be a nice change of pace nonetheless.
