The Saiyan was currently wandering near the mountainous regions; though not particularly close to Mount Paozu itself. Her reasons for venturing out into the wilds was simple wanderlust. Atsuko had no particular 'thing' to find, no real destination or goal to accomplish. She wanted to see what the world had to offer, so it was that she picked a direction and started walking, as she did every other day. Perhaps by mere coincidence, it was as if something had decided that it would not prove to be as uneventful as the most of her aimless wandering did. On this day in particular...
She found a cave. She peered inside the cavern, it was pitch black inside. She had no way of being able to tell just how far it stretched. What would she find inside? She had decided that it was time to find out, she rummaged through her pack and retrieved a torch. She pointed her finger at it, sending a very small, concentrated amount of Ki energy. Enough to cause it to spark and then ignite. Now she had a means of seeing inside the cave. With no more hesitation inside of her, she moved her hand to rest on the hilt of her sword.
And then she stepped inside. It was what one could expect; a dark stony and dirt-filled hole. There were no animals inhabiting this cave, however. As she glanced around, she couldn't find a single thing out of the ordinary. It didn't appear to be man made. An entirely natural cavern. Or, that was how it appeared for a few minutes into her walk. She started to notice subtle changes in the walls. Like they were picked at, finely cut rather than just formed by nature. This piqued her curiosity. Though now she knew to be cautious.
She pressed onward, and found that there were support beams and wooden flooring covering the cave now. One thing was abundantly clear; the wood here was ancient. Whatever was once living here, it was several years ago. Hundreds? Thousands? It was hard to tell. But dust had settled in a thick coating, and the wood no longer stood as strong as it once did. Lack of care and maintenance was perfectly clear. Yet the path remained open. The Albino Saiyan wanted to see what lay deeper. What was at the end of all of this? It seemed to awaken something within her.
To explore the secrets of this realm would prove a fun life. Though she had to admit, going into this place alone perhaps wasn't the brightest of ideas. At least it remained a fairly straight path back out to the surface. Though she would feel more comfortable if she had someone to accompany her. Well, there was no helping it. She wasn't going to head back out. The Saiyan needed to see more. She finally came to the cave's end. But what met her was not a rock wall that meant to tease her with wasted time.
Instead, it was a steel wall, fit to the cave around it. And in the middle was a large door of similar make. There were several lights as well, though they no longer worked. The bulbs had long since busted, and it was doubtful that any means of electricity still flowed within this mysterious place. It was a good thing she had brought a torch. Atsuko approached the door and noted a keypad next to it. Age had done away with it's use, however. She tested the durability of the door by pressing her free hand against it.
The groaning of metal, and the sudden toppling was what greeted her. The doorway was open now, that was... Incredibly loud. "Well, if something's inside... They know I'm here now.", she said quietly to herself. But this had gotten much more interesting. She steps onto the ruined door, and heads inside of the mysterious structure. What was left of a carpet was tattered on the floor. Cloth still hung on the walls, both were a faded red color. She stepped over to one of the cloths and found it to bear an emblem. "RR". What did that mean? The Saiyan set her sights forward and continued along the straight path.
Another doorway, and then it opened up to a complex. She was only half-right; some of the technology here still worked, somehow. The lights were on, though not all of them. The general condition of this place, which she could now guess to be a military bunker or underground base of some sort, proved still that no one was here to take care of it. But several times she saw that same emblem. A red ribbon, and "RR". Red Ribbon? Was that what it meant? It was a little on the nose, but perhaps.
She had several directions to take. She started by traveling to her right. Faded text on the walls said that the Armory was in this direction. Her footsteps echoed through the silent complex, it was honestly a little unnerving even to the Knight. What happened here? Why wasn't anyone here anymore? It was like she walked straight into some sort of apocalyptic scenario. She took a deep breath, the World was just as it was before. She had to remind herself of that. And she would need to get used to sights such as this. She couldn't shy away.
She came to another doorway, this time a set of iron bars not unlike that of a prison cell blocked her path, there was also a desk. Atsuko began to examine the desk and, sure enough. There was a key. She picked it up, a wave of dust shifting through the air as if it had been sitting for centuries undisturbed. Hopefully this was the right key to unlock that door. There was only one way to find out, the Albino Saiyan stepped over to the lock and attempted to unlock it with the key she had just found.
An audible click rewarded her with success, and then she pushed the door open. The blonde stepped through, and now she could find traces of the inhabitants... Or rather, former inhabitants. This man, or woman was dead. Very, very dead. Only a skeleton remained. "That... Makes sense.", was all she could muster up to say in response. The Saiyan mindfully stepped around what remained of the corpse as she continued towards the armory. But she could hear something moving, that couldn't be right. Could it? But what on Earth was making all of that noise? It didn't sound Human.
That much she could confirm. Carefully she approached the bend, the sounds were growing louder. She grasped the hilt of her sword, slowly easing along. She steadied her breathing, the Knight stopped at the corner. As if needing a moment to prepare herself for what may lay ahead. Whatever it was, it was close. She slowly drew her sword from it's sheath, trying to make such a task as quiet as she could manage it. She didn't want to give away her position until she knew what was ahead. She edged forward ever so slightly, then again. Until finally...
She saw it. Her best guess was some sort of Demon staring her right in the face. Black, soulless eyes and red pupils. A face resembling a skull with long, sharp fangs. She flinched and backed away, bringing herself into proper stance. Whatever it was, it reacted to her presence. It wielded a blade of it's own in one hand, the other hand looked different, it seemed to have a gun barrel where it's hand should have been. There was no shame in admitting that it surprised her, whatever it was, it moved fast and unnaturally, it's feet never left the ground.
It just slid towards her and brought it's blade into bearing, and then swung fiercely at her. She swung her blade to deflect it, her sword proved a much better match than the ancient blade. The creature's blade snapped in half. Though that didn't deter it, it brought it's other hand up and pointed it towards Atsuko. A volley of bullets were then launched forth. They wouldn't have harmed Atsuko, but she moved to avoid them all the same. Then, a quick thrust of her blade saw it pierce the being's chest. It was not the distinct sound of flesh being rend, however.
It was the sound of metal giving way, she pushed it off of her sword. And that was when she noticed that it didn't bleed. It was entirely mechanical. A robot. So these Red Ribbons had robots to man, or at least defend their bases. The Knight took a few moments to catch her breath. "Okay... That wasn't too bad. Need to keep an eye out for more of those.", she muttered between her breaths, and then sheathed her sword as she stood up straight. Luckily she didn't drop her torch during the bout. And it didn't lose it's light.
Fortunately, the path to the Armory was now clear. The Saiyan continued towards it, and eventually found about what she had expected. An old, abandoned room. It was filled with guns, ammunition. Explosives too. There was even some armor and uniforms. But none of it was useful to her. It seemed as though there was nothing to take away from this place aside from souvenirs. Well, there was a cap that appeared to belong to an Officer at one point. A beret bearing the same emblem that she had seen earlier. She proceeded to pick it up.
Atsuko shook the beret off slightly, getting rid of the dust as well as any insects that might have been hiding inside of it. It was still in relatively good condition, though it may need some thorough washing after all of this. She put it into her pack, and that seemed to be all the Armory really had to offer her. The Albino Saiyan turned and left, returning to the entry hall. There she turned to face as if she had entered from the surface. Where to head now? Straight ahead, or to the left... She pondered it for a moment.
And then she chose to travel to the left, being mindful of running into more of those robots, of course. The texts on this hall said that this led to the barracks and cafeteria. She... Didn't expect to find anything good down here. Rotten food and long dead soldiers were what she expected to find. Well, might as well get the cafeteria out of the way first... She stepped through the door leading to it, and found a fairly large room that could house hundreds at once. The Red Ribbon were a massive faction at one point in time.
It was odd that they weren't around anymore, she idly thought to herself. There were a few more skeletons here in the cafeteria. Did a battle take place here? Time hadn't done any favors to the scene, however. The Saiyan continued her walk right over to the counter, this was where the hungry men and women would have gotten their meals. Now it was just an old, dusty crypt. Barely resembling it's original purpose. The thought was humbling, and depressing at the same time. She didn't need to check the kitchen; there was nothing of value in there.
No souvenirs to take, no supplies for the road ahead. Just as silently as she had come, she left the Cafeteria and then turned her focus to the Barracks. Atsuko pushed the door open and stepped inside, it was a grisly sight. Most of the people died here... Not enough to account for all of the beds. A battle must have certainly taken place here. The Saiyan carefully stepped around or over each skeleton, attempting not to desecrate the dead if she could help it. Various footlockers littered the floor as well. No doubt housing the personal belongings of the people here.
She knelt down and checked one of the footlockers, inside she found various trinkets. An old watch, a faded picture. Even a book. She carefully retrieved the book and blew the dust off of it. She opened it only to find that the pages were now unreadable due to their age. The Saiyan gave a quiet sigh in response, perhaps it was for the best. She returned the book to it's resting place and closed the footlocker. There was no way to determine what had happened here. And it felt unnatural to remain here any longer. Atsuko returned to the entry hall once more.
Only a single direction remained now, so she traveled straight ahead. This seemed to lead to a command center, though there were no texts to guide her this time. There was a single door in the hallway, to her right. She opened it to find a small room with several monitors. Must have been for security, but none of them worked anymore. Doubtless the cameras did either. On the ground were two skeletons. Further evidence to some catastrophe occurring here. The Knight closed the door, and continued along the hall. Perhaps she wouldn't find anything here.
But it seemed wrong to just leave with so little. Finally she was met with some sort of security checkpoint, several more skeletons dotted the ground. So this was likely where the rest died... What immediately caught her attention next, were the still active robots. Five of them. Four resembling that one from before, but the fifth was different. More decorated, wielding a different style of sword. She quickly drew her sword as the robots began to close in on her. One of the robots surged forth and swung it's blade at her, she ducked in order to evade the blow.
Another one was aiming an overhead swing at her. She lunged forth, piercing her blade through it's head and then bashing it away with her torch hand. She turned to block another attack with her sword, and pushed back with all of her might, sending a third robot crashing to the floor. She wasted little time in stabbing the thing before it could rise back into the battle. She spun around and slashed the fourth robot she heard approaching. That left the differently decorated robot. It seemed of a higher quality make than it's brethren. She steadied her stance.
The Albino Saiyan briefly considered sending a Ki attack it's way, but that might prove dangerous so deep underground. Instead she waited as it slowly approached. It seemed much more calculating than the others. Though she didn't believe for a moment that it felt fear. It only knew what it was programmed. She began to step towards it, and suddenly the robot brought it's gun arm up, aimed at her and unleashing a volley of bullets. Atsuko swung her blade in precise fashion, deflecting each bullet before it hit her as she charged at the robot. It's pupils shaked slightly at her approach.
And then it swung it's blade at her. With her torch hand, she punched the blade, causing it to shatter, and then she slashed the robot with all of her might, cleaving straight through it. With the battle won, Atsuko sheathed her sword and re-assessed her location. What luck, she was right in front of the door they were defending. The Knight proceeded inside and glanced around the new room. It seemed to be a meeting room of some sort. A huge terminal against the wall, what must have been a screen to show a map at one point.
There was also a table with several chairs lined around it. A meeting place for the higher ups, though each chair was decidedly vacant. There were no corpses here in the room, either. There was a door just ahead of the table, however. The Albino Saiyan proceeded over to it, there was a key card slot next to the door, but she hadn't found a card, and she doubted that it would actually function. So... She pounded on the door with her free hand, and it toppled as one would expect. Dust surged upwards as this took place.
The Saiyan ventured forth to find a private quarters. This used to be the office of some sort of General, perhaps. She couldn't venture any guesses as to who, or what purpose this base may have served. It didn't particularly matter anymore. Just as with the meeting room before it, there were no bodies inside. Only an abandoned desk and empty chair. There was a bar off to the side, along with what was once a luxurious couch and a huge television. It seems they could afford much, whoever they were. She continued to examine the room, wondering what she may find.
There was a bed fit for a King; or at least, it was, once long ago. A computer terminal for private use as well. A stereo... He or she didn't want for much. As she continued to glance around the room, her gaze finally settled onto a safe. "Well now, wonder what's inside?", she wondered to herself as she walked over to it. She crouched down and then grasped the safe's handle with her free hand. Then she rather simply pulled the door off with her own brute force, rather than fiddle around with the lock for hours.
Setting the safe's door on the ground, she peered inside to find a curious small box. Just small enough to fit inside of the safe. She pulls it out and then opens it up, luckily it wasn't locked! What greeted her was the sight of Zeni. A fair chunk of it, not enough that she would be able to retire or something like that. But a fair amount for all of her work done today. She closed the box and then placed it inside of her pack, standing up. Well, that was all to be done here. Atsuko couldn't think of anything else to do.
It was time to head back to the surface...
