It was over.
The scent of blood, both new and old, lingered in the air. She could practically taste it, and like many of them, actually would have, if not for the blood of their kin tasting repulsive. Many of them had all learned that at one point since their change.
And hers had been rather memorable, since it coincided with the day her cousin had learned of her secret. This was after a good week or so with adjusting to this new life, and the red-head getting curious about exactly what had happened with her.
Excluding the taste of her mistake, the memory was mostly a pleasant one. But it was an event of the past, and something she shouldn't hold too fond of, if she wished to improve this life of hers. Stepping off of her throne, which was really just a nice chair she had particularly found comfortable, bodies were stepped over, as she made her way towards the crowd of those left.
She hadn't partaken in this particular bout, for reasons that ever since she had joined, was never mentioned to her. Although usually around this time, she made up for her dislike of not participating, through getting rid of the bodies.
It was a decision that she had solely made, having seen their attempts before, and being dissatisfied. It would lead her certainly bloody by the time she was done, as well as exhausted, but it made for great training. She would also for the most part, be motivated by this unknown aggression, which despite seeing a traditional favorite of hers, had still not appeased her mood.
"Go on and leave this to me."
A hand had waved them off as she got started with grabbing onto the first body, which sticky mess had temporarily imprinted itself onto her hands. The survivors had moved as instructed, which was a routine that they had built up since she had joined.
She was not at all anywhere near the status of being a leader, but her efforts to take care of things most didn't want to, gave her a special position in the hierarchy. She saw it as something that benefited her however, and the more that they lazed around, taking the easy way, the better for her. It was not her time yet to rule, though it would come so long as she let it develop.
The others would head back to their normal lives for the most part, wherever that may be. Those who had gruesome appearances, likely lid a life of solidarity regardless, while those vampires who retained their human appearance, lived their lives in secret.
Once they were gone, she had made her way up above as well, hefting the first body up, without too much trouble. This was one of the many things she was gifted with, for turning into a vampire. All that talk of darkness she had warned about, both by her coven, and the friend who had introduced her to this power in the first place, seemed like it was all just a scary folktale.
The only thing she could really identify to be true on what they had been said, was this whole aggression thing, along with some of these guys having a grotesque appearance. Something she hoped she could avoid as she went and gained more power.
This feeling of euphoria she got, was just something she didn't want to end, only heighten. Making it outside, the air was noticeably different from the pleasant ones below. The area the coven was located in, wasn't too bad of one, as it wouldn't be a group she would care to join otherwise, sound reasoning or not. Though it was close to regions that could attract danger.
Of which were in the forms of creatures who could possibly rival the hunger of blood that her coven had. It was also one of the qualms the others had with disposing the bodies in the first place. Fast as they might be, approaching territory of another, was something that they were cautious of. And what she would have to do for most of the night, would attract many of their attention.
But with no one else really willing to do so, she didn't really have much of a choice. With the gift of speed that was given to vampires, which was substantially more than an average human would have, she had raced out of their hideout into western lands.
The rush she felt, was a certain high that had kept the aggression hidden away at the moment, with each step that she took. Even the stamina of a vampire was greater than humans, although there was still limits that became noticeable after certain distances.
Limits that forced her to stop for recuperation. The lifeless body she had with her was dropped to the ground without much care, as a hand was placed on the walls of the building she had hidden herself behind. If she wanted to transport all of the bodies before morning, there had to be a stopping point. No one lived in this vacant building, which was only one of many that was around.
And even if there was, a pile of bodies wasn't something that most would dare to touch. They were practically at the mouth of the forest, and once the bodies were gathered, all she would really have to do is throw the bodies in, before the creatures would show.
One of her pleasures, which always brought a triumphant grin on her face, as she watched the useless body be torn apart, bits of skin being flung over for the lesser creatures. Though of course, while she did make these offerings, it wasn't without return.
However, she had kept herself away from those thoughts at the moment, as there was still plenty of work to be done. She would still have to clean all the blood that had been shed in this culling as well, but it was something made to be considered later.
She left the lone body here, and raced back to the hideout.
Hunger.
That was one other thing she could think of, that both her coven and friends, had warned that came from being a vampire. It was a feeling that she knew could bring pain, but in the two years since her change, it was never something she allowed herself to feel.
The feeling that came with being in a blood frenzy, was one which was inhumane, even for a vampire. From what she had both seen and heard, there was no control over your own actions, and memory was likely to be wiped or leave gaps, without your knowing.
It was a thought worthy of something to be despised, as part of the reasons for being a vampire in the first place, was the easy access of exerting control. But this state was something that brought none, and rather than euphoria, was only a longing pain.
One that needed to be stretched, and would last longer than she likely thought. Perhaps that was the reason why she had always been offered assistance from the other members of her coven, but her sense of superiority, was something that had always rejected it.
Being in someone else's debt, was just a thing that she loathed. It demonstrated that she lacked control, and for her, was something that stunted growth, rather than promote it. And so long as she was cautious, it wouldn't happen to her.
The time and effort that was spent in retrieving the bodies, was nothing to really write home about. Most of them had agreed it was better not to go for dismembering the head, but the other limbs of the body, was a different subject entirely.
If only because the face was something that could identify someone by their other life. Privacy had its positives and negatives, which although was something she could only agree with to an extent, she understood it was something to be respected of.
For the deaths that did occur, it was better for their real kin, if any, to think themselves as missing. The kind of horror that came from the bouts and culling that vampires were apart of, were ones that weren't meant for those not emotionally mature.
There had to be something special about this person to go against this rule, which was a test that she had went through, back when she had changed. For her change being the cause of just desire of control, wasn't something that would hold up against their secrecy, especially not by someone who was still in high school. They were a private society for a reason, and would stay as one.
So beyond the transportation taking time, and her own frustrations with battling against fatigue, it wasn't really something to look back at. She was done with carrying the bodies over to her chosen spot, and knew that hunger would be approaching her soon.
But it wouldn't be spent in curbing it off with the taste of her own kin, if she could help it. One by one, the bodies were lifted up, and thrown with as much strength as she could muster, into the forest. It brought heaviness in her arms, but along with it, were some rumbling that came from within the forest, which only seemed to get closer as her fatigue started to show.
By the last body, she was forced to shapeshift herself into her mist form, where she moved further into the forest. The sights inside were ones that her past self wouldn't have believed, since these creatures sanctioned themselves away from civilization.
But there was no trickery to be had. Dinosaurs lurked about, and tore apart at the bodies. The creatures were huge, but against someone who had survived for this long, they weren't anything to worry of, even if their numbers was against her.
There was a good reason they stuck to the forest than the city, and they knew it. Whether it was technology, or the sight of humans in general, it kept them away, and proved these creatures wee no threat. Even with all their roars and stomping around.
She hovered over a spot and shifted back, not surprised to find that she had gained their attention. Some of the smarter ones had already been cautious seeing her in her mist form, and moved away, but it was always the dumb ones that stuck around.
The heaviness that she built up with transporting the bodies, had a clear toll on her, though wasn't one that couldn't be handled with more blood. Using what energy she had left, she charged towards the slower ones, wasting no time with sinking her teeth in.
Its loud roar was deafening, and warned off its kin in the area, as she managed to get a chunk out of it. The blood dripped messily down, which she lapped at greedily. It still wasn't enough to wade away the hunger, and she was far from finished either.
To be able to slam into a dinosaur, and be able to feel the equivalent of just a heavy punch, was an accomplishment that she took pride in. One that was rewarded with another bite of the creature, who was left alone to suffer the fate it had befell.
More blood, and it still wasn't enough. How tired was she to feel this way? Was this month's culling really the biggest they had? Or was she just getting weaker? These thoughts disappeared from her mind as she attacked at the creature again and again.
She didn't want to stop.
The scent of blood, both new and old, lingered in the air. She could practically taste it, and like many of them, actually would have, if not for the blood of their kin tasting repulsive. Many of them had all learned that at one point since their change.
