Jie Shan paced nervously in the chambers of his father. His mind was racing with the possibilities. His thoughts had been abuzz since the return of Nasu to Planet Natto. It had certainly turned the political structure upside down, and his father was wroth about that. Years of scheming had probably all been tossed away the moment that Super Saiyan landed on the surface of Planet Natto. Jie Shan had to smile at the mental image of his father scrambling to recover the bits and pieces of his carefully laid plots. Still, something did not sit right. This would be the first time he’d seen his father since the return of old Overseer’s son and claimed the position for himself. And made Jie Shan a captain to boot No doubt his father had scarcely slept since. There was an electricity running through Jie Shan’s body, an excitement. Eagerly, he awaited whatever came next for Natto. The return of Nasu had been the most exciting thing in years. He was so excited, he hardly noticed the weight of his armor.
“A pity,” chuckled Jie Shan, whispering to himself. Suddenly, the door to his father’s chambers and in stepped his father himself, as if summoned by Jie Shan’s mocking of him. His father looked haggard, bags under his eyes and his eyes were dull.
“Jie Shan,” said his father quietly, lacking the usual charm and bravado in his voice, “I’m glad you could make it, son. We have much to discuss. Very much. Come, please, sit.” His father gestured to the table near the middle of the room, a fine table made from a dark brown offworld wood, imported with chairs to match. Such a wastrel, thought Jie Shan, but he said nothing as he took a seat opposite from his father, hands folded in front of him. He stared at his father, unblinking. The man did look older. Even his clothes, typically finery, seemed to be disheveled and aged. Just what had his father been doing the past few days?
“So,” began Jie Shan, “What did you want to discuss?”
“First of all, tell me, did you make contact with Nasu as I said?” Demanded his father.
“I did,” confirmed Jie Shan with a shake of his head.
“And…” said his father, nodding expectantly, a hungry look in his eyes.
“And what?” Asked Jie Shan with a small, cocksure grin.
“You know damn well what I mean, Jie Shan!” Snapped his father, “Not stop playing around and tell me what happened!”
Jie Shan shuddered. There was hellfire in his father’s eyes now. The kind that haunted his lower mind, his nightmares. With his head bowed he whispered, “I made contact with Nasu. I proclaimed our good will towards him and assisted him with his objectives. And I was promoted to captain by Nasu.”
“I see. A captain? This is quite the unexpected turn of events, my son,” mumbled his father, the fire fading from his eyes, “I suppose it does not hurt. You being a captain will only help my plans. But onto more important matters: you were around for the Super Saiyan transformation as well. Tell me, what was it like?”
“It was… Something else entirely. I only felt it, but the feeling of it was enough to set me to shaking. It is powerful, father, very powerful.”
“Just as I thought. Another Super Saiyan. Just what we needed, more of those golden haired fools running around,” his father growled. With a sigh, his father stood. He paced around the room a few moments, leaving Jie Shan to sit alone with his thoughts. Another Super Saiyan… Such power was unbelievable. And Jie Shan thought he was strong. Well, he thought, it wouldn’t be the first time he had been proven wrong. This was quite the shock, though. Ever since he had been a child-mercenary, he thought he had at least been one of the strongest fighters. But he supposed that had just been arrogance.
“Well,” said his father suddenly, breaking the silence, “This turn of events leaves us with little choice.”
“What do you mean by that?” Asked Jie Shan, confusion apparent in his voice.
“Jie Shan, I’ve been planning for years. Since you were but a simple child. And I have always had great plans for you and I, my son. I’ve told you this before. But I’m not sure if you knew how deep my plans ran,” said his father, speaking as if he was giving a lecture, “From the beginning, I’ve told you I needed you strong. My original plan was to have you defeat the council and seize the Overseer position. But the best laid plans often go awry. Nasu’s return throws a very large wrench into my plans, but I think I’ve figured out how to proceed. You will get close to Nasu, become his trusted confidant. All the while getting stronger. And you will insert yourself into the new government.”
“Father, I don’t see what the point of getting stronger is. There are Super Saiyans running about,” sighed Jie Shan, shaking his head.
“Son, that’s the point: you will become a Super Saiyan,” exclaimed his father, a wild grin on his face. Jie Shan’s eyes narrowed. Just how little sleep did his father have? That was crazy.
“Yes, father, I will just become a Super Saiyan. Like it is that easy,” scoffed Jie Shan.
“Jie Shan, this was always the plan. Do not think I did not consider this from the very beginning. I was a young man during the last age of Super Saiyans, during the empire’s glory days. I wanted to be one myself, but I lacked the power,” said his father, a touch of sadness in his voice, “But I thought that one day my children might become Super Saiyans. Imagine my joy when you were born, my son. Even if you were a hybrid, there is much strength in your mixed blood. For years, I have studied your genes and the method to become a Super Saiyan. And there is something… unusual in your genes. There is a potential for great power there.”
Jie Shan shook his head. His father was talking crazy. But there was a certain appeal to what he was saying…
“Well, father, where do I begin?”
His father laughed, “By growing even stronger, son! Trust me, you will get there if you do. Already, you are among this planet’s most powerful. If you grow your power, you can reach that golden ascension!”
Jie Shan nodded. He’d do it. Not for his father, but for himself. To once again prove that he was among the strongest. That golden power… It was absurd. It was a carrot on a stick. And he’d try and reach it, no matter how far away it might seem.
“I guess I’d better get started them,” said Jie Shan with a smirk.
“Yes, you’d better. I will forward one of my staff to you. She will help you with the training. She is my greatest expert of the state. She has spent the past few years studying all the data that exists on Super Saiyans. She might be the foremost expert on the state, outside of government agents,” explained his father. There was a mad look of pride in his eyes, as if he was the expert instead of his employee. And Jie Shan had seen that look in his father’s eyes before.
“Good,” said Jie Shan, “I’ll have need of her.”
Jie Shan rose from his seat and began to make for the door. As he walked, his father stopped by his side, putting a hand to his shoulder. “Remember, son. My legacy, our legacy. It is one that will be gilded.”
And then they parted, a shiver going down Jie Shan’s back. He hurried from his father’s chamber, looking for any warmth at all.
