Jie Shan hummed to himself as he sat cross legged on the floor, a variety of wires and and scientific doodads strapped to his body. Occasionally, a harsh, electronic beep sounded from one, a noise that caused his father's scientist to scribble notes on her clipboard after checking with a monitor. He was bored. The young halfblood had been sitting there for what seemed like an eternity, waiting for the woman, Rudieri, to say something. He cleared his throat.
“So,” he began, “Why are we doing this again?” He gazed at the scientist Saiyan, examining her as she examined him. She looked young, probably only a few years older than himself. Strange, he thought. Jie Shan had expected something different, someone older. The mental image he had for this supposed scientist did not match reality at all. He shifted in his weighted armor, uncomfortable. He was antsy, overly so. Jie Shan wanted to move, he wanted to free himself from this mess of wires.
“Because,” she said as she gazed at him with critical, analytical eyes, “I need to check your vitals. I need to make sure that you're healthy before we do anything.”
There was a sense of refinement in her words, a weight that Jie Shan could not place. She spoke with authority, as Saiyans often did, but her’s was different. Were it not for the trademark characteristics of a Saiyan, Jie Shan would hardly guess she was one. Dark black eyes, long black hair and a tail to complete the set. She was a Saiyan, through and through.
Jie Shan laughed. “Trust me, I'm healthy. Hell, I’m a perfect specimen,” he bragged with a cocky grin.
“You really aren't far from the truth, actually,” said Rudieri softly, “But you need to touch up on some of your vitamins. I’ll give you supplements and you will take them everyday. “
There was that innate authority again. Ordering Jie Shan about, as if she owned him. Though, he thought in amusement to himself, he would not mind that at all.
“Your heart rate just jumped a bit. Nervous?” She asked suddenly. Her eyes went between him and the monitor, a small frown on her lips
“Um, no,” said Jie Shan, shaking his head, feigning confusion of his own, “Was just thinking about some stuff.” She stared at him for a few moments through narrowed eyes.
“Hmm. Alright,” she finally said, sounding unconvinced.
“So, doc, what's the verdict?” Asked Jie Shan, curious.
“Well, you're certainly strong enough to keep going forward,” Rudieri said with confidence, “Your physiology is interesting to me. I haven't had much chance to work with hybrids before, much less one who is part Elemi. Closest I’ve been is when I was looking over your genetics file. Very interesting indeed. The prior doctors were correct. It makes for a very potent mix, almost as if you're some kind of mutant.”
Jie Shan tilted his head and squinted his eyes, a look of confusion taking root on his face. “A mutant? What's that supposed to mean?” He asked.
“I said like a mutant. You're not exactly a mutant. Well, maybe you are. I'm not certain. Your genetic code is unique, that's for sure. Saiyan and Elemi blood mix in very interesting ways,” she elaborated, “Like, for example, your Oozaru form is more powerful than the average Saiyan’s, at least in terms of raw power.”
“Huh, that's pretty cool. What do you think causes that?” Asked Jie Shan, genuinely interested himself. He’d never heard that before.
“I can't be one hundred percent sure of that,” admitted Rudieri, “Not without a complete study of your genetic code, but I think it might be related to your Elemi blood. Either way, it's interesting.”
“Well,” chuckled Jie Shan with a small smile, “I'm glad that you find me interesting.”
Rudieri gave a small, half-smirk. “Anyways, I need to ask you some questions for my files,” she explained, typing in front of a monitor.
“Sure, hit me,” volunteered Jie Shan.
“Excellent. First, that scar. What injury did you get that from? It's obviously not from service, because it isn't documented and your service records are immaculate,” she said, clicking rapidly.
“Oh, this? It's from when I did mercenary work with my mother. I got it when I was about… eleven years old. Some bounty we were tracking pulled a knife and got a hit in before I could disarm him. It wasn't a deep cut, though,” he explained. Jie Shan remembered it like it was yesterday. It had been his first real wound.
“Ah, so that's where it's from,” muttered Rudieri, “Your file is kind of bare for the years you were with your mother. I guess even Gai’s influence has its limits.”
Jie Shan frowned. His father's influence. Just how much did the man really have and where did it end? Maybe he could find out. “Really now? Just how much influence does he have?” Jie Shan asked, faking a casual tone.
Rudieri looked at him and half smiled, “Your heart rate went up again,” she said, “And trust me, he has plenty. You should see your own file. The things in here… Crazy.”
“Really now?” Asked Jie Shan with anticipation, “Mind if I take a look then?”
Rudieri shook her head back and forth rapidly. “Sorry,” she chirped, “Can’t let you. Orders from above and all that. Ask your father, maybe he'll let you. But I doubt it.”
Jie Shan sighed. There went that idea.
“Anyways,” continued Rudieri, “Next question. Your father says you get these episodes where you emit electricity from your body. Can you tell me about those?”
Jie Shan sighed again. His father had never bothered to really learn what was up with that. Typical.
“They’re called ‘flare-ups’,” explained Jie Shan slowly, “Or at least that's what my mother called them. Apparently they're an Elemi thing. Visual releases of intense emotions, she said. Mine are electrical in nature.”
Rudieri smiled at that and paused for a moment before rapidly tapping away at her keyboard with even more vigor than normal. “Intense emotion, huh? Very interesting indeed,” she whispered to herself.
“Really? Why’s that?” Questioned Jie Shan.
“Mmm, no reason,” teased Rudieri, “Now, these ‘flare-ups’, do they hurt or cause you any discomfort?”
Jie Shan shook his head. “No, they don’t. It’s just… natural, you know? “ Jie Shan shrugged as he spoke. He did not remember a time in which the electricity had never seemed natural. He even used it in his fighting.
“I see. Well, I confess I do not know much about Elemi, at least no more than the average person. They’ve been away from the universal community for so long, you know,” she admitted.
“Uh, yeah. I guess. I don’t really know too much about it, really,” said Jie Shan, almost awkwardly.
“Yes, well… Let’s just continue, shall we? That’s enough question for now, let’s continue taking bio-data,” said Rudieri, “If you’ll please stand up, and mind the wires, will you?”
Jie Shan nodded and struggled to stand, minding the wires as she said. He stood there, feeling strange as Rudieri stepped closer to him, examining him, occasionally prodding him with a pen. He feigned a wince as she stuck him in the ribs with one of her jabs. “Hey,” he said with a laugh, “Watch it will you?”
“Oh, stop being such a baby and keep quiet. It won’t take much longer now. Where was I? Oh yes, muscle mass…” she whispered, scratching away at her clipboard.
They continued this way for a few minutes until Rudieri finally sighed. “Well that’s that,” she said finally, “That takes care of the physical.”
“Over already? How disappointing,” chuckled Jie Shan, shifting in place. These wires were cumbersome, unwieldy. “Can I take these off now?”
“Hmm, I suppose,” stated the Saiyaness with a sigh, “Though I’m still trying to figure out how you survived Etorin’s blast. According to my data, your power level is roughly forty thousand, even if those weights of yours take it down a notch. Nothing to sneeze at, though. I’m just wondering how you managed it.”
Already, Jie Shan had begun to strip the wires from his body, but suddenly he stopped. She was still looking for answers.“Oh,” exclaimed Jie Shan, a sudden thought striking his mind, “I think I might be able to answer that.”
Rudieri looked at him for a second and raised an eyebrow. Finally, she spoke, “Do tell.” She held her clipboard high, ready to record whatever he might say. Jie Shan’s hands fell from the wires. A quick moment of fear ran through his mind, a fear that he might have messed up here data gathering with his removal of the wires and probes. Half-heartedly, Jie Shan tried to replace them as he began to recount his story. “Well,” he began, “It’s not so weird, but I can kind of ‘power-up’, so to speak. I don’t typically wear a scouter, so I can’t give you exact numbers, but I know my own body and if I have to guess, my power had increased six or five times over when I was in that state. Even through this weighed armor of mine.”
Jie Shan tapped the armor he was wearing for emphasis. How often he wore it, and as a handicap too. While he had them on, even his old squad mates could keep up with him. And how often it caused people to underestimate his real strength. Another of the downsides, he supposed, but it was for the greater good of his body.
Rudieri looked at him even more harshly, the blackness of her eyes going between him and her notes, as if looking for any clues as to what state that might be. Her eyes came to rest on Jie Shan and she lefted her pen to her mouth and chewed ever so slightly on the cap, as if in deep thought. Cute, thought Jie Shan, but he wanted to know just what was going through the head of her’s.
She set her pen aside and sighed. “Can you show me?” She asked, rubbing her temple, “I’m really not sure what that could be. I’ve never heard of anything like that occurring in Saiyans.”
Jie Shan nodded. He could show her that. In fact, he was hoping that she would ask. That feeling of power coursing through every pore of his body… He quite liked it. Jie Shan was almost drunk on the power when it was with him. It emboldened him, made him take risks he probably shouldn’t. Like trying to turn Etorin’s attack… At least he had survived that.
Jie Shan lowered his stance and spread his feets ever so slightly. He flexed his arms and felt his body go tight as power began to flow through him. His mind went as tense as his body as he concentrated, his mind focused on bringing out that inner power. And soon a dull yellow aura began to surround him, his power rising with every second. Energy radiated from the young halfblood as Jie Shan felt his power climbing. The air around him was humming with power, it was alive with energy. And finally, it reached its zenith and he was left standing there, looking at Rudieri, his body surrounded by that dull yellow aura.
The two stared at each other for sometime, Rudieri’s mouth slightly agape as she looked at him. She was perfectly still, not even reaching for her pen. The only sound that could be heard was the power radiating from his body. And, the sudden harsh beep that resounded through the room. Rudieri jumped at the sound, suddenly scrambling for her pen, pressing it to paper as soon as she could. Finally, she spoke.
“Fascinating,” she said with a breathy whisper, “Absolutely fascinating. Such a sharp increase in power.”
Jie Shan smirked, his confidence rising, just like his power. “I’m glad I could impress,” he said, “What do you think?”
“I,” Rudieri began, “I don’t know what to think. This is strange. It’s like the Super Saiyan transformation, but… not. Like some kind of pseudo-Super Saiyan.”
Jie Shan’s smirk widened. So, it was a special power after all. “So, would you say I’m half-way there or something?” He asked, waiting for his ego to be stroked even more.
“No,” she said suddenly and almost harshly, “I wouldn’t go that far. It is a really interesting state, but its not even close to Super Saiyan. But, it does make me wonder what that state really is. I’ve never seen it in a full-blood before. It almost makes me think that it's a result of your mixed blood.”
“So maybe I am a mutant after all?” Asked Jie Shan.
“Maybe. Remember, I can’t say for sure. And halfbloods are a strange subject all together. DNA often combines in strange ways. Like, for example, you have the phenotype for a Saiyan’s eyes and tail, but the phenotype for Elemi hair,” she enthused, “But whatever that state was, it definitely is not entirely rooted in your Saiyan blood. Some part of it must come from the Elemi side. I guarantee it.”
“I see. Well, whatever it is, I’m just glad to have it.”
“No doubt. It’s definitely useful,” exclaimed Rudieri.
Jie Shan paced in place again. He was excited now. Perhaps it was the power running through him that had set a wild spark running through his body, but he could hardly contain himself. He was bursting with power. “So, am I good to go forward with this Super Saiyan training my father wants me to do?” He asked, excited.
“Yes, I think so. We can start as early as tomorrow,” confirmed Rudieri.
“Excellent,” exclaimed Jie Shan, practically jumping for joy, “I look forward to it.”
Rudieri laughed, a small laugh. She scribbled away at her clipboard, humming to herself. “You know, I’m looking forward to it too. I hope you don’t disappoint me.”
Jie Shan struck a pose and smirked. “I never disappoint!” He declared, his voice loud and booming.
“I hope not,” said Rudieri quietly, still laughing to herself, “Now, why don’t you run along? I need to get things ready for your training.”
(I'll take zeni, please! Thank you!)
Jie Shan hummed to himself as he sat cross legged on the floor, a variety of wires and and scientific doodads strapped to his body.
