CAPITAIN’S LOG NUMBER 0007.
So. We are still travelling to our destination. It will be a few hours until we get there, so I thought of continuing the story from my time at the army. Just so we’re clear. I am not doing this in an attempt to avoid the chores of a ship this size, it’s just that I need to keep the journal updated before these precious memories lose most of their details.
Anyway, where had I stopped? Oh, right!
There I was, in the dark alley behind the cafeteria. The one who brought me there, who I thought were threatening me were actually trying to offer Konnani-chan and me sanctuary. Both Pesto and Flam explained that the two of them also had the same interests as me, but, due to the nature of the army, having possessions such as miniatures was hazardous. They told how Pesto one of his early companions when he was just a soldier at the army.
“There is no mercy at this place Odrog. Those savages do not understand our passion and, because of that, they resort to the easy way out. Violence.”, said Pesto with a serious expression on his face. Seeing as he had caught my attention, he continued. “This place isn’t the most adequate for this conversation. Let’s move on to my chambers”.
After dragging me out here, they now wanted to go somewhere else? “Why the hell did you bring me out here if we were going to your office?”, I said, still a uncomfortable with all that was happening. “We needed to know how devoted you were. We can’t just reveal such a secret to anyone”, said Flam by my side.
All that was incredibly suspicious, but I didn’t have much choice back then. The next 2 minutes it took us to reach the office looked like an eternity for me. As we got there, Pesto took his seat behind his table with Flam by his side, while I sat on the chairs in front of them.
As we made ourselves comfortable, Pesto leaned his elbows on the table, looking straight at me. “Let me tell you a story.” he said with a stern semblance. “I was once like you. A fresh soldier who had just joined the military, and just as now I had the same interests”, he said that as Flam put the figurine I saw before between us. “I was a man with dreams for the future and for every challenge that rose in front of me, my dear Hatsu was there to give me the strength to continue.”
As the sergeant told his story, a small smile formed on his face. It was obvious that those were happy memories for him, but as sudden as it appeared it now vanished as the narrative continued. “For quite some time my happiness endured the rash realities of the army. Until that one night.”
Pesto now had a sinister expression, as if just remembering was enough to bring back all the pain. I wondered what could have happened then. In truth, deep down I knew what he was going to say. It was for that same reason that I hid Konnani-chan from everyone else. I think that I expected that my worst fears would not become true, but the reality was harsh and cold. Pesto’s next words brought chills up my spine as I wondered what if it were I in his place.
“Just like you did, I hid my beloved ones from the rest, but eventually I was found out. Those savages could not understand my passion and, just as wild beasts, they trampled upon my dream.” A small tear ran down his face as Pesto took a picture from his pocket and put on the table.
“Hatsu-chan was my most valued possession… And those savage… they… they…” The sergeant was clearly losing himself. Seeing such a scene Flam put his hand on his shoulder and proceeded with the story. “They burned her in front of him. They beat him down and when he couldn’t resist any more they burned her”.
“Burned her”. When I heard those words, I felt a knot in my stomach and tightened my grip on Konnani-chan. That was my worst fear. That someday I would be caught and wouldn’t be able to protect her. If something like that were to happen to me, I don’t think I would be able to achieve what I did. I got lost in my own thoughts for a moment when Pesto’s voice sounded again.
“Odrog. That day made a scar in my soul that will never heal. Even so, I survived. I survived and I swore to myself that I wouldn’t let anyone else go through that experience again”. Pesto stood up from his chair and walked to a bookcase filled with military books. There he removed three books, changing their positions. As soon as he put the last one in its new position the bookcase started to sink into the ground revealing a small lift behind it.
The lift was quite simple and led us a few meters below the ground to an underground room. It was quite crowded with three people inside that tiny box. At least my short size was usefull for something.
When we reached the underground room, I was mesmerized. The place was like a dream come true.
I walked in slowly. My brain still trying to comprehend the magnificent sight in front of my eyes. It was only after Pesto started talking that I came back to my senses. “This is our sanctuary!” he said with his arms open and a proud expression on his face. “Odrog! Tonight you showed us your courage and dedication towards the cause! Towards your Konnani-chan! And because of that we welcome you to our humble abode!”
Flam came to my side and started talking. “If it wasn’t for the sergeant I think I would’ve been exposed already. He really saved me and now, we want to help you too man. With this safe haven for our ladies! Welcome! To the Otaku’s Heaven!”
Otaku’s Heaven was like an oasis in the desert. It provided me with the safety that I so much needed in that place. We had quite some good times, but everything eventually came crashing down. But that is a story for another time.
