Hwa-Jae walked through the woods towards the base of Mount Frappe, squinting as the howling winds and blinding snow made it difficult to traverse. Thanks to the Sukinbaningu, the Burning Skin Technique, Hwa-Jae did not fear the harsh cold of the elements as her ki flowed through her body and continuously provided warmth. Still, she needed the warm clothes she purchased in West City as to not expand her ki; she could not control the Sukinbaningu, and if she was not careful, the technique would drain her dry on the blizzard scourged face of Mount Frappe.
As she walked towards the mountain, Hwa-Jae spotted a small clearing in the middle of the woods. Hwa-Jae approached the empty spot and found that it was a good spot to set up a base camp for herself and for Koge. She looked to the hikui bird and noticed that he trembled from the cold of the region. The poor avian must not be used to such cold climates. As she went about collecting wood for a fire, she looked to the frigid mountain that stood tall in front of her and wondered about climbing Mount Frappe. From what Hwa-Jae could recall from her master’s first brazier, no woman could climb the mountain due to impassable blizzards that formed whenever one came near. It was also said that the cold of the mountain was enough to actually freeze flames. Those same blizzards would come to hinder her now on her journey to the braziers.
Once she collected enough dead branches from the surrounding trees, Hwa-Jae set up a small fire, igniting it with a small flame from the tip of her finger. Koge immediately dove down to gobble it up, forcing Hwa-Jae to defend the fire from him. "If you eat it too quickly, you'll lose all of your warmth," she warned, "Give me a moment to make more fires. One for the outside and a few more for the inside."
Koge harrumphed and flopped in front of the flame as Hwa-Jae went about her work. As she collected more wood, he asked, "That mountain sure looks scary. Do you think you'll be able to climb it?"
"I don't have a choice, do I?" she said, setting up a second fire to make for Koge's breakfast. "My master put a brazier on the summit of Mount Frappe, just like she hid one on Mount Kiwi. This time I don't think there will be many complications beyond the dangers of the mountain. A shame, I think I preferred the giant killer robots."
Hwa-Jae looked about the forest for a large dead tree to make into logs and larger dead peices of wood to make greater fuel for Koge's fires. Just a short walk away, she found the dried, rotten, fallen tree, plenty good for burning. She raised her hand and broke several pieces off then returned to the camp, setting them into a pile.
Koge did not leave his eyes from the mountain. "There's a good chance I won't be going with you. It's too cold for me here. I'll die if I try to follow you up Mount Frappe."
She nodded in understanding as she stoked a second fire, making sure it did not burn out too quickly. She wondered if she should just make one big fire, but decided against it. Smaller fires were easier to control and produced less light, drawing less attention. While she learned to suppress her ki, she still felt a need for caution. The Black Fire Witch did not need more help in finding her.
"Don't worry about it, Koge," Hwa-Jae said, "I'll be fine. Just keep watch on Mount Frappe while I'm up there. If anything happens, I'll use my ki to send up a flare. When you see it, I'm in trouble so get help."
"And who am I going to get?" Koge said, "I don't know any of your friends. If I see a flare, I'll come and get you. I might hinder you on the climb, but I'll try to get you by flight. Besides, you can't bring all of your human stuff. Just the stuff you need to survive. I'll watch over the stuff you leave behind."
Hwa-Jae softly smiled at Koge, scratching the back of his head. Even though they met relatively recently, he seemed to value Hwa-Jae highly. Whether it was because of friendship or that she made "tasty fireballs" as he put it, she was glad to have a companion like him. However, she then thought of Dyn and Hisashi and others she met along the way. Maybe she should have taken their offer to help her with the mountains. Though as she looked up at Mount Frappe, perhaps it was better that way. The threat of the mountains was evident. Could they have survived the flames of Mount Kiwi? Could they survive the cold of Mount Frappe? Better Hwa-Jae to do these tests on her own and not potentially bring harm to others.
As she set up five more fires for Koge, she looked to see the hikui nestled up like a big fury ball between some of the fires. Hwa-Jae smiled as she went to her bags and pulled out one of the long, warm blankets she purchased in West City. Laying it over Koge, Hwa-Jae went back to her bags and pulled out a loaf of bread and started eating. She did not take her eyes off of Mount Frappe and it cold surface. Even now she felt the biting wind on her unprotected face. The Kasai could only do so much to keep her warm. If the legends were true and the mountain would react to her violently, she needed to be prepared.
Travelling at night would do her more harm than good, so Hwa-Jae decided to get some sleep and begin her journey to Mount Frappe in the morning. She nestled under her own blanket near the fire, watching Koge as he slept before finally drifting off herself.

As the morning sun rose in the east, it's like peeking past the silhouette of Mount Frappe, Hwa-Jae stirred to consciousness. She yawned as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes to see that all of the fires she set for Koge were still blazing strong. As Hwa-Jae stood up to prepare some breakfast, Koge woke up as well, yawning with his long beak. Hwa-Jae tossed him a hinotama before putting a slab of meat on the camp fire. The two greeted each other as Hwa-Jae ripped another piece of bread for her morning meal.
"Good Morning, Koge," Hwa-Jae said with a smile. She flipped the meat over to cook the other size. "I see it's a wonderful morning for mountain climbing."
Once the meat was cooked, Hwa-Jae bit down. Koge lapped at one of the fires and the two finished their meal in quick moments. Once Hwa-Jae put on clothes appropriate for winter weather, she turned towards Mount Frappe. She took a deep breath and focused on the mountain. She zipped up her parka and slipped into warmer boots. As she prepared, Koge shook his head.
"How are you going to approach this?" Koge asked, "You could just fly up the mountain to get to the top. It would be the smart decision."
"But what if I'm meant to climb it like Old Master Fuega did?" Hwa-Jae said, "Flight would be easy, but the trials of the mountain are not meant to be easy. Besides, flight will take energy. I should conserve as much as I can once the blizzards hit."
"You don't have time to worry about things like how you are supposed to do things, though. And while flying will take more energy, so will trying to climb that mountain on foot." Koge's words struck true to Hwa-Jae. Every moment she wasted meant another moment for the Black Fire Witch to gather her power, and she still had to find the braziers on Mount Paozu and Fire Mountain as well. She clenched her fists as she thought of her Temple, her home and all of her friends who waited for her return with the embers. She wanted to see her mentors again, even that grump Pyya. She wanted to see Cineza again.
Hwa-Jae nodded to Koge. "You're right. I can't waste too much time. If I fly, I'll cut days from the journey. My Sisters are counting on the embers. Koge, wait here for my flare or my return. There should be plenty of fire for you to eat."
"Good luck, Hwa-Jae," Koge said in encouragement. "I'll be waiting."
Hwa-Jae nodded to Koge before blasting off towards the mountain. As she sped off, she felt the cold air drop in temperature by several degrees. Despite her warm clothes and the Kasai providing warmth, she knew the trial would be the hardest yet in her life. The light of the sun shone brilliantly off the snow and it was almost blinding to Hwa-Jae. She barely had time to adjust her eye sight to the highly reflective snow. The last thing she needed was to go blind before she even got started.
She hurtled towards the summit of Mount Frappe making good distance, her forceful aura separating the snow into waves. However, the closer she got, the stronger the winds became. The frosty air did little to help; even with the Burning Skin Technique, she felt the biting cold against her exposed skin. Unused to such cold temperatures, Hwa-Jae lowered herself to the side of the mountain, her body sinking into the frozen snow. She needed to rest, to catch her breath, yet with each intake of cold air, she felt her lungs burn.
“Never expected the mountain to be this harsh,” Hwa-Jae muttered, “I can do this though… I am Kasai. I am fire.”
However, the curse of Mount Frappe came to bear it's full might on Hwa-Jae as a terrible blizzard began to strike. Whether it was because she was female or just a random snowstorm, it did not really matter. There wasn't even time for the clouds to gather as the storm confused her. The winds howled greater than any beast. The cold stung her worst than any blade. Torrents of snow fell upon her as she stood knee deep in a drift. She looked behind her to see if she could see the camp in forest, but the blizzard utterly blinded her. Even as she tried to see the summit, the storm prevented such.
She ground her teeth. Hwa-Jae tried to fly again, but the wind knocked her back to the snow where she skidded across the frozen mountainside. As she stood up, the snow around her began to melt, making her clothes wet. The heat from her body, thanks to the Sukinbaningu, made her clothes wet. Even though Hwa-Jae never climbed a mountain before, she had been caught in a rain storm. Wet clothes with cold winds would freeze her in short order. The heat would dry her out, but Hwa-Jae did not know what would happen first: her freezing death or warm clothes.
There was one chance to warm up. Hwa-Jae opened her palm and created a ball of ki. Easy enough. Yet as she ignited the ki orb to make a hinotama, the storm on Mount Frappe picked up to even fiercer gales. Fire was supposed to freeze on Mount Frappe. Perhaps the magic that cursed the mountain was offended that Hwa-Jae managed to produce a flame it could not freeze. She only guessed her ki prevented the flame from chilling completely. She held the fire close to her chest in an attempt to keep warm.
Hwa-Jae needed to move fast and quick. Flight just made her cold, so she decided to move with her ki-infused strength. Hwa-Jae leapt from spot to spot and made her way up Mount Frappe, all the while taking a moment to feed more ki to the Sukinbaningu. All she needed to do was keep the pace. Easier said than done. The higher she got, the harsher the blizzard became. As she leapt to one ledge, the wind and the ice both contributed to a slip, causing Hwa-Jae to fall and hold on to the ice with a hand and a yelp.
She looked down to see nothing but the twisting snowstorm, just the same as when she looked in any other direction. The ice cracked under the pressure of her hold. Hwa-Jae could not afford a fall. While she was certain the fall would not hurt her too badly, it would slow her down and disorient her more than the blizzards already did.
It was time for a desperate move. She did not want to project too much energy, but as the icy ledge cracked further, she knew it had to be done. As the ledge broke off from Mount Frappe, Hwa-Jae charged a hinotama with her feet and detonated it, bursting upward by using her own technique for propulsion. She rolled into the snow, breathing heavily from the expenditure of energy, but at least she was still on the mountain.
A low rumbled echoed all around her. Forced on her feet, Hwa-Jae spun around trying to find the source of the rumbling. Could it be that Mount Frappe was actually a volcano much like Mount Kiwi?
A small chunk of snow hit Hwa-Jae in the side of the head. Then another. Then another. Hwa-Jae raised her hands to block a larger chunk of ice and snow that fell from height. More snow continued to fall as Hwa-Jae's eyes went wide with realization. Her hinotama technique did more than just help her up the mountain. It also sparked an avalanche.
Thousands of pounds of snow tumbled down the side of Mount Frappe like a tidal wave of thick heavy snow and ice. Hwa-Jae tried to fly away, but a large block of ice smashed into her, forcing her to the ground. Grimacing, Hwa-Jae looked up and saw in horror as the white tide of snow surged towards her. Desperate, Hwa-Jae raised her hand to fire ki blasts only for an ice shard to fall, slicing her hand down the palm.
Hwa-Jae cried out in pain as blood poured from the wound onto the snow only for it to be swept away by the oncoming avalanche. She pressed her hands together to stem the blood flow, but could do little to dress the wound in the middle of a crisis. More snow piled all around her as more and more began to bury her. Hwa-Jae shouted in defiance, but the howls of the blizzard drowned out her cry. The snow continued to fall unabated and Hwa-Jae could do nothing to stop it.
As the snow continued to bury her alive, she only had one more option. Taking a deep breath, Hwa-Jae lowered her head as the avalanche blanketed her under a thick layer of snow. Once buried, the avalanche stopped. The blizzard ceased.
Silence descended on Mount Frappe.
