Satan City.
The name was something she had always thought was funny, ever since learning about it, and was where she and everyone else in the Drama Club, were headed to. They were going to be working with another school for a play, and it was a trip that she had been looking forward to going on, before her vacation in the Southern Islands had started. It had been a long week since then.
Events that happened on the island were nothing more than a faint memory, but thinking about it still brought a sense of fear. Papa and mama had said they wanted her to train more with the weights that she had got, though she didn't really understand why.
It would have scared her if they didn't tell her to just relax, and she had never been one to disobey her parents, so she did. Whatever they were planning, she would find out in the coming weekend. For now though, she was enjoying herself.
The chatter that went on in the bus, was mostly noise, except for the conversations that were actually around her. She sat with one of her friends, who was talking to their other friend, but it wasn't a conversation that she really paid any attention to.
The new sights outside was what had caught her eye, and didn't seem at all like what she had imagined. The name of the city made her think that there would be more people dressed up in red and holding pointy sticks, but it was just like their city.
Though she did see people holding more signs, and crowds forming to look at something. What it was though, she likely would only find out by asking the locals, as the bus drove past, and continued heading towards the school they would be working with.
"...These really shouldn't be too different from what they have planned."
Looking away from the window, and over her friend's shoulder, she found him showing designs of costumes for the play they had been working on. They already had the parts for it made from what she could remember. She didn't see why anyone wouldn't like it.
"Are you worried?"
"Course he is. An I keep telling im' the guy he's working with is gonna like it."
Their other friend had leaned forward, answering for the boy, who shook his head disagreeing. The girl had always spoke in a way that papa had told her some people who lived in the south tended to speak, which was actually where the girl was from.
And according to Yuki, who she was sitting next to, people like Haruka didn't give up what they thought about something. He said it in a way that it sounded like it was a bad thing, but it was just one of the many things she didn't get about humans.
All she could do is support both sides, and hope that they didn't stay mad at each other for too long. Friends weren't supposed to fight after all, and fighting would mean working with those from this school would take longer than it normally would.
"You don't know that for sure. He didn't even email me back."
"Maybe he's just busy."
The pig-tailed brunette nodded, agreeing with her. It was simple, but the sight made her warm inside, and it felt like she had actually done something to help out. The boy didn't respond though, causing her to slightly frown in worry.
"Saeko's also worried about Saeko's partner. But Saeko can only hope they're a good person."
She offered a smile to the boy, who the brunette had elbowed in the side. They did this a lot for whatever reason, but she knew that whenever it happened, whatever the problem was the boy had, he would end up agreeing with what she said.
"Yeah, you're right."
"Good. Now can we talk bout somethin' else?"
This wasn't any different. He had returned the smile that she had gave, and the other girl brought up changing the topic to something else. Her eyes lit up, remembering one of the worries people had about field trips that she could help out with.
"Saeko can help with today's math if you need it."
The bus had stopped.
Their trip here had started off a bit sad, but the boy really did seem to cheer up, talking about other school-related things. As they were instructed to get off, her eyes widened at the size of the school, which was a lot bigger than their own.
There must have been so many people who went to this school, which meant there were lots of people she could get to know and be friends with. While the rest of the drama club had seemed to think the same, her two friends seemed to be sad again.
Though for Yuki, at least, who had gone ahead by himself, without her and Haruka. She watched him go, only to feel a hand on her shoulder, which came from the brunette, who stared off at the boy with a frown. She wasn't mad at him, was she?
"Come on. He's just an idiot."
Ah.
"Please don't stay too mad at him, Haruka-chan."
The girl pulled her along without a response back, and they had went into the building together. Inside, as their own club supervisor was led by the school's own, they passed by shelves showing the achievements of the school on display.
People here must have worked extra hard, if they had so many awards. The hallways was mostly empty, although taking a peek at the classes they also passed by, it was clear the reason for it, was because most of the students were all in class at the moment.
Although they were told by their own supervisor not to chatter, the others had anyway, before the school's own had said it would be fine. The classes apparently had enough stock of something that would block out most of the noise in the hallways.
It was amazing to hear. Their school didn't have any of this stuff. It was one thing that she had thought of, that most people here did as well, and the reason for all of these nice things, the man had explained was because of the school's funding.
He seemed happy to explain it, and she was sure if they had this kind of funding, their own supervisor would as well. It was great to be able to have this kind of experience, she had thought, as they were led into the school's theater. The students here were already hard at work, carrying outfits here and there, which theme she recognized belonged to the play there were to do.
It was the symbols on the back that gave it away, as what her friend had said earlier about the design being different, seemed to be true. The supervisor had introduced their school, before saying they should go and partner up with the names they received.
People around her moved about, causing her to give glances around, surprised at how quickly they were getting in order. The girl who she was partnered up with, was a blonde, who's photo she had seen in the email that she had got. So any locks of blonde hair was what she looked for around the room, until a single cough had came from behind her. Was someone not feeling well?
"Ayame Kido. I'm guessing you're Saeko?"
It was the girl that she had been looking for. The girl had extended out a shaking hand, which she had accepted with a smile of concern. She didn't look happy, and after letting go of the handshake, the blonde had closed her eyes in a weird way.
"Are you not feeling well? Saeko is fine if you want to sit."
"That...won't be necessary. We should get started like the others."
Ah, people were moving so fast.
Four days.
That was all they could really afford to be away from the school for this project. It was supposed to help out both schools. She didn't understand how, only remembering that her friends said it would make important people the school had, happy.
She and Ayame had gone backstage, where although she spotted Yuki, who seemed to be in a better mood, the boy was as busy as everyone else was. Both he and his partner had handed over their outfits, which was similar enough, but still noticeably different.
The two had left them alone, while the other girl had handed her the outfit her friend had put together, with the same shakiness that had been shown outside. She didn't believe the girl was lying, when she said she was fine, but whatever was going on was worrying. They went to change in different stalls, where her body loss its form and shape, as it wore the clothing.
"Are you okay?"
"Y-yeah."
A bump had sounded in the other girl's stall, as she finished slipping into the costume, which was worn over her usual clothes. She hurriedly left the stall, and waited outside the blonde's own, which had taken a bit longer than she had done with dressing.
"What happened?"
"It's nothing."
As the girl had stepped out with that uneasy smile of hers, she had peeked her head inside, and couldn't see anything that could have bothered the girl. A glance over the girl, which was now dressed in the costume, she didn't really find anything wrong either.
No bumps on the arms, or weird way of standing, which mama had said was something that should be looked for, if she thought that someone was hurt. Nodding at the girl as if she had asked her to wait, the blonde led her to the chairs in front of the mirror.
Two of them were moved so that they were facing each other, and the girl took a seat in one of them, before grabbing what looked like a script that was left on the table. She went and pulled out her own from the slingbag she always wore, opening it up.
"I suppose we can start with the scene on page 32."
"Ah, that one is Saeko's favorite."
She lipped to the page the girl had mentioned, where one of the female leads, wrote a goodbye message to the male lead. For this project, they were supposed to take turns playing the roles they were assigned, with all members having the same role.
The different outfits, was supposed to be a different part of the character's life, which was explained to her as something to help get into the mood. A cough had came from the girl, and from where the blonde was pointing to, it looked like she wanted to go first.
"Merry Christmas, Kentarou."
From what she remembered, the play was written and put together to match the winter season. Already, listening to the girl, she wanted to clap. But she was told early on when she had first joined this club, that it wasn't something you were supposed to do.
"By the time you hear this, I'll probably be dead. How should I put it...You know, the truth is, I never wanted to leave this town."
At least, not before they were done. But as the girl continued, she found herself making her hands lose its form and shape, to keep from applauding to the girl's efforts. The girl's eyes had widened, but she continued reading the lines until it was finished.
Then the girl had let out a gasp, clutching her chest.
"Ayame-chan, what's wrong?!"
She didn't understand what was happening, only that the girl was feeling pain.
