Wandering through East city, Kinko couldn't remember the last the time she had spent some time to herself. It was refreshing to be doing something other than studying and helping her mother around the house. Only browsing through the stores, she really had no intentions of buying anything. Beginning on her third hour of basically window shopping, she noticed a small crowd gathered a man, who claimed he was the 'King of Ducks'. Confusion flashed over the girl's face. How was he the King of Ducks when he was a human? The situation barely made any sense, but it did strike her interest. Squeezing through the crowd she made her way towards the front. The teen listened to the man inform the crowd of the duck who'd gone missing. Kinko listened as the man sorrowfully told the crowd about the duck named Sparkles. Kinko couldn't help but to absorb the man's emotions. The way the man told the story of his favorite duck made the teen empathize with him.
After gathering more information on the duck and the possible whereabouts of it, she set out toward the last known location of him. Arriving at the pond, she looked around and realized she was more than familiar with the pond. Her father would take her to the pond when she was a little girl. Smiling softly to herself she sat on the grass next to the pond. Moments later a "quack" pulled her out of her thoughts. She glanced up and saw a duck across the pond waddling around. Studying the duck she took note that his feathers were a shining white color almost making him... Sparkle. Smiling she rose to her feet and quietly made her way around the pond being careful not to startle the duck. Now standing only feet away from the duck, Kinko stood idle waiting to make her next move. Slowly moving closer, she frowned as the duck waddled its way into the pond. Letting out a frustrated sigh, Kinko looked around to make sure no one was around before stripping down to her underwear and climbing into the pond.
The girl watched with squinted eyes as the duck climbed out of the pond on the other side. He's a difficult one. Silently cursing herself for getting in the pond for no reason, Kinko placed her clothes on. Watching the duck stand on the opposite side of the pond, Kinko sat in the grass again and watched. Keeping her eyes on Sparkles, she could see why he was Karl's favorite duck. He was a beautiful duck and very unique. "Quack". Kinko watched as the duck turned and waddled away from the pond. Standing to her feet she quickly followed in the direction that the duck had gone. She stopped when she was met with citizens wandering the street. Scanning her eyes around the area she looked for the duck and sighed in defeat when she couldn't spot him. Turning to head back to the pond she stopped in her tracks when she heard him. "Quack!". Spinning around she was met by Sparkles sitting right in front of her. Smirking she reached down to pick him up, but he waddled a few feet away. Of course. Shaking her head she glared at the duck. The duck simply replied with a "quack!", and turned to waddle further into the city.
Kinko contemplated on if the duck was worth chasing all over the city, or if she should return to King Karl to tell him there was no catching his duck. The girl went with her first thought after recalling the man's saddened state. Looking around she found Sparkles waddling in circles in the center of a group of kids. Walking over to the small group, she stood amongst them and watched Sparkle for a little while. She reached for him, thinking she'd caught him off guard. Of course, she was wrong. Sparkles quickly waddled into the large crowd of people. "What the hell!" The girl shouted, growing annoyed by the duck's antics. Glancing at the children she apologized for her choice of words and quickly followed after Sparkles.
She mentally cursed herself, when she couldn't spot him anywhere. "Where did you go now?" the girl asked herself quietly.
Walking through the city, slightly frustrated, the girl kept her eye out for Sparkles. She'd seemed to walked forever when she finally decided to check the time. The girl had spent over two hours chasing after the duck, and she still had nothing to show for it. Sitting on a bench she looked a few feet away at an ice cream parlor. Basically giving up on giving up on her quest to find the duck she decided that having ice cream before she headed home was good idea. Walking in she was warmly greeted by the older woman behind the counter. Walking up to the counter she ignored the stares that she'd seemed to be getting from the people who'd also chose to be in the parlor. Ordering her ice cream, she was caught off guard by the woman also handing her a slice of cake. A flash of confusion swept over her face as she took the dessert from the woman. "It's for your duck" The woman warmly said before moving on to the next customer.
Raising her eyebrows, Kinko turned around and looked down. "Quack!" The girl giggled softly at her unawareness. She was so busy trying to follow Sparkles, she hadn't stopped to notice that he was following her. " I heard it was your birthday, and now you have cake" Breaking off a piece of cake and handing it to him she watched as he happily ate. Tilting her head to the side, she came up with an idea. Walking out of the parlor she kept the cake slice to her left, holding it teasingly. She smiled in victory when she heard Sparkles waddling close behind her. The girl made sure to continue to drop small pieces of cake to keep the duck in tow. Reaching the pond where she'd seen him first, the duck waddled next to the pond and sat in the grass. I'm never going to get you back to Karl am I? Kinko thought to herself. Sitting down next to Sparkles and crossing her legs, she sat the rest of the cake in front of him. "Why don't you want to return. King Karl is really worried about you and it's your birthday" The girl told Sparkles as he ate the remainder of the cake. "Quack!" The girl face palmed herself when she noticed she'd been talking to a duck. "You don't even understand me... Kinko you're still talking to the duck".
Shaking her head she decided to stand and stretch. She smirked as she watched the duck also stand to his feet. Walking a few steps to her right, she smiled when Sparkles mimicked her movement. "Well this just got easy" Making her way back into the city, she remembered to make sure that the duck was still following her. She'd learned that the duck was easily distracted by many things, which was probably why he'd gone 'missing' in the first place.
She'd only been walking for a few minutes before she heard the signature "Quack!" Stopping she turned around and watched Sparkles walk over to a bakery window. She noticed he was eyeballing a a slice of pound cake. Nodding her head knowingly she opened the door and entered. She payed little to no mind the stares that these people were also giving her. I'm guessing people don't have pet ducks. Buying the cake she and the duck left the bakery and she watched as he began leading the way. Noticing he was headed towards where she'd last seen Karl, she shrugged her shoulders and followed. The girl did notice that the sun had begun to set, the sky was a beautiful orange color, and it made her remember her initial reason for coming there. Everything seemed to wind down. The people were becoming more scarce and the shops were closing down for the night. It was peaceful and the girl completely relaxed for the first time in hours. Glancing back at the duck, she was surprised that his attention hadn't altered yet, and that he hadn't changed his direction. Maybe he wasn't lost, maybe he really did wander away on his own. The girl concluded from his actions earlier.
Reaching the main street Sparkles pace picked up, causing Kinko to have to jog behind him. She slowed her pace down, when she noticed that Sparkles had approached King Karl and hopped into his lap. Kinko smiled as the man's face lit up. The girl smiled softly as the man continued to thank her. "It really wasn't a hassle" The girl began to walk away before she remembered, she still had the cake. Walking over to Sparkle, she sat the cake in front of him expecting him to began eating but instead he pushed the cake back towards her and waddled away with Karl. The girl looked at the cake she'd placed on the ground. She smiled at the nice gesture, but she of course wasn't eating the cake. She felt a lot more better when she noticed that the birds had began to pick at the cake. Turning around she began to make her way back home.
