“Agh!” WHAM! Tomina was hit directly by an energy orb, sending her flying into the wall of her gravity chamber. It was made of a very strong metal which was called something that she couldn’t pronounce, so it didn’t even leave an indent in the wall. So far this thing was working as advertised. The scientists had assured her that this was the most advanced gravity chamber in existence. Tomina intended to take full advantage of the technology. Although right now it was taking advantage of her, judging by how things were going at the moment.
Tomina climbed to her feet, eyeing the three training spheres that were hovering in the air. They were bots with a very basic A.I. designed for training combat. Even though they were all decently strong, Tomina wouldn’t have a problem fighting them normally. The 30x gravity made things significantly more challenging though. Tomina slid her right leg back before firing a small energy sphere at one of them. Almost instantly after the attack left her hand, Tomina flew up into the air, firing two streams of fire from her hand towards the other two bots.
Tomina grit her teeth as she fought against the chamber’s gravity. At least she had gotten used to how to aim her attacks under these conditions. Half an hour ago, she couldn’t properly hit things since the gravity affected where her attacks would go. Now that she had made the adjustments though, everything she threw out went exactly where she wanted the go. The bots were all about to be hit by her attacks. Well to be more accurate, they were on target to hit the bots. The bots did have an answer to their impending destruction.
The bot which Tomina had thrown the energy blast at simply fired one blast of its own to counter hers, colliding in mid air and causing a blinding explosion. The other two bots simply flew out of the way of the streams of fire. Although they had served her purpose. They had forced the bots to focus on dodging rather than her. Tomina was flew towards the blinding light which the two explosions had caused, aiming to inflict some significant damage on it during this opening.
This is my chance. I’ve got to end this before these bots wipe the floor with me in an embarrassing fashion. The enhanced gravity really does give them an advantage. Although I know something that they don’t. And it’s going to lead to my victory!
As the blinding light filled her vision, Tomina thought back to a similar battle during which this situation had come up. It was remarkably similar to her current predicament. Granted, she didn’t have to deal with a higher gravity. Although her opponents were more crafty than just a group of training bots.
Twelve Years Ago, Age 1576: On Route to Planet Spinero
“Come on little missy! I know you’ve got more in you then that! Do it again!”
Tomina was struggling to catch her breath, looking up at her instructor while bending down and holding herself up with one arm. Tomina was part of a raiding party that was meant to take back Spinera. It was a planet that was only a fair distance away from Vegeta. It wasn’t too far from their home world and the other worlds they still owned. The PTO had gained control of that planet again, so they were tasked with bringing it back under the Empire’s control. Tomina was getting some training done with Commandant Budok. Although this proving to be quite the challenging training session.
“Heh, don’t worry. I’m far from done.”
Tomina flew forward, throwing a punch at Budok’s midsection. Her teacher raised his hands and a blinding flash of light filled the room. It didn’t stop Tomina though. Thanks to the Saiyan Pride that she had been taught, she could simply power on through the pain the light exerted on her eyes. She was counting on Budok to use this technique. While the light was up, she planned on passing through him with an afterimage before following up with her actual attack. She was sure that he wouldn’t be able to see it coming. Although she was about to be in for a rude awakening.
Budok threw out a punch a couple of seconds after Tomina's attack would have hit him, and smacked her right in the face. The afterimage Tomina had set up had gone right through Budok, vanishing in a puff of smoke. Unfortunately, it had not fooled him. With a cry, Tomina was sent flying into the far wall, slamming into it and falling face first onto the ground. The light faded away, revealing a grinning Budok
“I didn’t teach that move to ya. You would have hit most opponents with that missy! You still need to work on ya form though!”
Tomina groaned, trying to push herself back up to her knees. Her arms couldn’t support her though, and she just fell back down onto the ground. She looked up at her commander, her mouth just barely managing to get out one word.
“How?!"
“How did I know that you threw an afterimage at me first? I’ve been doing this for a long time missy. Using the flash of lighter of a cover was pretty clever though. I’m not gonna tell ya what you did wrong though: you got to figure that out for yourself.”
Budok walked towards the exit of the gravity chamber, turning to look at Tomina. He saw that she didn’t look very happy, so gave her an encouraging smile.
“Ya did really well. I wasn’t expecting for you to use that move. If I hadn’t seen it used like that before, ya probably would have landed that blow. It doesn't look like you can keep fighting, so we’ll call it today. Ya need some rest and recuperation. Won’t do us any good if you’re beat up before we even set foot on Spinero.”
Budok turned off the gravity, then walked out of the room. Tomina gritted her teeth, slamming her fists against the floor of the gravity chamber. Short bursts of blue fire shot up from where she hit the ground
“FUCK!!!”
After a little bit of time in a rejuvenation tank, Tomina found herself in Karen’s room, talking over what had just happened in the training chamber.
“I’ve been learning the Vegetean arts at a good pace, and I’ve trained hard even outside of the normal sessions. I learned that afterimage strike to gain the upper hand on Budok in that fight. I attacked him when he was vulnerable, and he didn’t know I had my own afterimage technique. So how did he know what I was going to do and deal with it so easily?!”
Tomina stomped over to the fair wall, leaving her friend sitting on her bed, Karen was no match for Tomina even on a good day, so she couldn’t slap sense into her even if she wanted to. She wracked her brain for anything she could use to calm her friend down. In the end she just decided to put things in perfective for Tomina in a positive light.
“He’s a lot more experienced than you, and has been in more fights than you’ve been in. Hey, you managed to learn that afterimage strike technique. That was completely self taught. I’m sure with enough time you’ll….”
Tomina whirled around, the end of her hair turning red as she threw a small fireball at the far wall. Karin quickly raised both hands on reaction, entrapping the fire in a circular barrier. As usual, she was going to keep it up until the flames died down enough: this was par for the course for them at this point. Even so, the situation and place where Tomina had thrown that fireball as unwise. As suddenly loud Karen made sure to emphasize how dumb throwing that fireball was.
“Are you completely mad?! If the ship catches fire while we’re in space, you could end up killing us all! How are you going to serve the Empire if you’re dead?!”
"Yes, I'm completely mad right now! How long did it take you to figure that out, huh?!"
Tomina glared at her best friend, even though she knew she was right. Pretty much any words said to her at this moment was just going to add fuel to the fire. The Saiyan hybrid walked over to where Karen was sitting, and plopped down on the bed right next to her.
“I'm sorry... it's just that time is something we don't have a lot of right now. The Empire needs as many strong warriors as it can get more than ever. Fully seasoned Warriors Karen. Not warriors in training who can't even transform into a Super Saiyan. How am I supposed to stand up to our strongest enemies if I can’t even do that much?"
Tomina rolled over on the bed, burying her face in her hands. Karen stayed where she was, despite wanting to go over there and comfort her. Tomina was going to need to be dragged out of her current mood if she wanted to make any headway with her.
“You’re still hitting yourself over what happened on Natto, aren’t you? You did all you could do. You were only 7 years old at the time, and it’s only been a year since then. I’ve never heard of a Super Saiyan that young before. Most Saiyans your age would have died on that battlefield. Honestly, you put too much on your shoulders Tomina. Sometimes you need to accept what you’re capable of. You’ll buckle down under the pressure if this keeps up.”
Tomina raised her head from her hands, looking over at her friend. Her hair had faded back to her normal brown color, so she wasn’t in danger of spontaneously combusting everything around her anymore. Judging by the look on her face though, she was still mentally beating herself up over her inability to live up to her own expectations.
“I know what your saying is true. There's nothing I could have done about certain things, and that I did do all I could. Yet even knowing that, I still feel like I didn't do enough. I may not have much more time to get stronger. It’s why I have to improve as much as I can right now. But I’m not getting stronger at the rate I need to be. If only I was born 10 years earlier! I could have turned the tide in that battle, I'm sure of it!”
Tomina stiffened as she felt Karen’s hand on her shoulder, but soon relaxed under her friend’s comforting touch. For her part, Tomina’s best friend wondered why Tomina thought they had so little time left. Even though she dismissed it as part of her ranting, it starting pricking her at the back of her mind. She put that aside for now though, focusing on cheering up her depressed friend.
“You’re worrying about things that you can’t control. This isn’t like you at all Tomina. You aren’t the type to overthink things. If you don’t put yourself together, you’re going to get yourself killed out there. You’re the smartest fighter I know, except when you lose your temper. You become dumber than a Humongoloid whenever you lose control.”
Tomina snorted, rolling her eyes as she looked over at her friend crossly. Karen was the only person lower ranking than her who talked to her like that. Granted she wasn’t wrong in this case, but it was the kind of remark Tomina wouldn’t have let slide from any other person of Karen’s rank.
“Yeah yeah, I make dumb mistakes with my hot head. Don’t worry, I’m not going to die to those fat spiky fucks. I’ll be up for a fight once we get there.”
Karen rolled her eyes at Tomina’s attitude. They were best friends, although she did tend to get on her nerves sometimes. The Saiyan hybrid had a tendency to brush things off sometimes.
“You know, it wouldn’t kill you to drop the sarcasm sometimes. You’re insufferable sometimes. Why do I hang around you as often as you do.”
Tomina raised her arms over head, letting out a small grunt as she stretched her limbs.
“You hang around me because of my likeable personality and my stunningly amazing battle techniques. Oh, and the fact you would probably have died by now if I wasn’t your friend.”
Tomina lowered her arms and conjured up a fireball, tossing it up and down in her hand. Karen buried her face in her hands, letting out an audible sigh.
“Is that really the reason? Because death seems preferable than having to listen to you right now.”
That only made Tomina laugh. At least she was in a good mood again. Doubting herself before a major battle would have likely gotten her killed. Going in with her confidence back to good levels gave her and Karen a good chance of survival.
Present Time
“FINAL BLOW!!!”
Tomina threw out a punch that hit the bot that was dealing with her energy blast. It completely shattered the front half of it while sending it flying towards one of the other drones. Both of them exploded, scattering metal and wires all over. The remaining bot managed to hit her with an electrical beam that was designed to stun opponents. Tomina winced, glaring over at the machine as she fired an energy sphere at point blank range. It shattered into pieces, its broken remains falling down to join the broken training bots on the chamber floor. Tomina floated down to the ground, panting and sweating profusely.
“Tch, maybe a hundred at once was a little too much.”
Tomina floated over to the control panel, turning off the gravity and burying her face in the towel she had there. Tomina was doing all she could to accelerate her training. Since she was now a squad commander, it was her job to get those under her prepared for the fights to come. They weren’t strong enough to train on her normal level though, meaning that she would have to spend time teaching them on a level that they could handle. So naturally Tomina had decided to make her training more intense to make up for the time she was losing. Although she had gotten a bit more then she bargained for.
“Next time I battle the combat droids, I’m only fighting 60 at once.Maybe 50. I’ve got to try other settings with this chamber as well. There’s quite a few ways I can train using this room. I look forward to trying all the features this room has to offer. They're going to amazing if this thing can do what the scientists said it could do."
Tomina walked over to the door of the chamber, opening the doors and leaving the room. She was going to take a nice relaxing shower. She was absolutely drenched in sweat and blood, and it felt uncomfortable for her. Not to mention it would help soothe the pain she was feeling from the attacks that had hit her. She left the shattered remains of the 100 combat bots where they were. She would make Teara pick up the pieces later.
