The sword on Celerous's back felt far heavier than it was, and he was beginning to regret taking it with him as he scaled the intricately designed spire of Korin Tower. His shoulders and legs burned with fatigue, but letting go would be tantamount to falling to his death, as the Karinga tribe had informed him that he was not to use Ki flight to get to the top. They hadn't, however, deigned to inform him what or who was actually waiting for him at the top. Hell, Celerous wasn't even sure if he really had a reason for taking the challenge, other than trying anything to take his mind off of the day he was almost killed by that damn blue Bio-Android.
Even the thought of it sent chills down his spine, and Celerous had to pull his body flush with the tower to keep from accidentally dismounting himself. He had known that there were people in the universe far stronger than him. Hell, he remembered the day Natto was destroyed, when the Earth's new channels would talk about nothing else. To have that kind of power, to destroy entire planets and civilizations; it was something far beyond him. As surprising and horrific as it was, his father had told him that people with that power had always existed. That they would continue to exist, and all he could do is try to match their power.
Even with that warning, Celerous had never expected to meet someone so strong in the middle of nowhere on Earth. It's power had been overwhelming, and even when the hybrid had tapped into his hidden potential, and unleashed his Hidden Power form, he had still been nowhere near that thing's level. After that day, Celerous had increased the brutality of his training regimen, and his power had more than doubled at a result. Still, even with his boost in power, and the new form he had achieved, Celerous knew that Plasma would destroy him at full power.
And it pissed him off. But more importantly, it scared him. Had his father fought someone of similar power the day he died? Had he known that fear?
Celerous was so absorbed in his thoughts, that he didn't realize that he had made it to the top of the tower until he bonked his head on the curving base of the tower's interior floor. Shaking his head, he pulled himself along the bottom, until he reached the ledge of what looked to be a small balcony. He grasped the lip of the tile floor, hoisted himself up onto the balcony, and stood.
His breath was labored, but he'd made it. He'd climbed the tower, with his weighted gi on, and his new sword strapped to his back to boot.
Galen had been distracted on this day. So many things have happened this previous months that it was completely overwhelming and, truth be told, he wasn’t able to keep up with it just yet and that was coming in the way of his training and that bothered him. The human sighed deeply as he reached the window of the lower floor of the Tower, staring at the horizon. ”So many things… Honestly, how am I supposed to keep up with all that? I mean… I’ve been the Tower Keeper for almost a year, but… I still feel like I’m just a farmer boy, trained by the monks of the Orin Temple… It’s so weird sometimes…” he thought to himself, sighing yet again. But then something struck him. ”Uhn?!” he sensed a considerably high energy signature climbing up the tower; it paled in comparison to the top dogs he knew, but it was far beyond Earth’s average and that was always something to be mindful off.
People were climbing the tower quite often lately too, as he couldn’t help but to remember that odd saiyan named Carva. Because of that he thought it would be wise to greet this person taking up the challenge of Korin’s Tower, even though his heart wasn’t quite as focused as it should be.
The person who climbed the tower looked like a warrior: he was bulky enough and interesting enough had a sword on his back, quite similar to Galen’s own. The tail was enough of a clue that he was a saiyan, but he looked quite human-like too. ”Guess saiyans and humans really do look alike.” he simply thought, resisting the urge to shrug. The Tower Keeper stared at the man and cracked a somewhat kind smile on his face and, while Galen didn’t look like much, if this saiyan was capable of sensing ki energy, he would definitely realize just how powerful Galen was as he wasn’t suppressing his power.
”Welcome to Korin’s Tower. I’m the Keeper of this place. My name is Galen. Who might you be?” he kindly asked.
Celerous felt the enormous power level, before he saw the man. It made his eyes bulge, if only for a second, and he swallowed hard. And then the man emerged, and if Celerous was being honest, the human (at least, Celerous assumed he was human, as he had no tail) was the most unassuming person he'd ever met in his life. Even with the sword he had strapped on his back, had Celerous not been able to feel his power level, he would never have assumed that the brown haired man might be a martial artist. But, he supposed, it would have been foolish to assume otherwise. After all, this man was the Towerkeeper.
Celerous straightened his arms at his sides, and bowed to the swordsman. His mother had drilled manners into his very being, and if anyone deserved his respect, it was the powerful warrior in front of him. He stood straight once more, and noting the smile on Galen's face, felt his body relax a little.
"Hi, my name is Celerous. It's a pleasure to meet you, Galen."
Celerous felt like he should say more; that he would have said more, but he was still a little in awe of this man's power. Humans were not exactly known for having massive power levels, and to meet one who overshadowed him so completely was a bit of an eye opener. It was also a little embarrassing, but Celerous pushed that thought to the back of his head. That was clearly his Saiyan blood talking, and listening to it never got him anywhere but in trouble.
"I, uh, found myself in the Karinga Tribe's village below, and they just sort of pointed at this tower and told me to climb up. I'm not sure why they were so adamant on it, but I like challenges. So here I am. I hope my arrival didn't interrupt anything important."
Oh man, what if Galen had been doing something really important? He looked relaxed enough, but Celerous got the feeling he was always relaxed, or that he at least always appeared to be. For all he knew, the Towerkeeper could have been in the middle of solving some Earth related crisis, and he just bungled the whole thing up because a couple of tribesman told him to scale a tower.
The saiyan introduced himself as Celerous and Galen nodded acknowledging that. ”Nice to meet you, Celerous.” he said with the gentle tone he was known for, but then silenced in order to allow the saiyan to tell him the tale which led him to take on the challenge of climbing Korin’s Tower. It was interesting to know that the Karinga tribe accepted Celerous enough to even share this piece of advice and that made Galen chuckle, feeling more relaxed now that he had indications that the saiyan was enough of a good person.
Galen shook his head when he said he hoped not to interrupt something important, truth be told the human was just immersed on his own thoughts, unable to accomplish anything with his mind alone. In a quite carefree tone, he chuckled once again. ”It’s fine! I was quite bored to be honest! Just lost in my thoughts! Not much else to do up here, other than take care of my few errands and train my body and ki! Hahahaha!” and Galen didn’t even sound like someone who was actually important. He was a light hearted man with a very big heart and an welcoming attitude.
”But I’m impressed you did manage to climb all the way up here with those weights of yours.” he playfully winked, showing he had realized he was using weights to suppress his energy and strengthen his body. ”But tell me, Celerous, what can the Master of Korin’s Tower do for you? Is there anything specific you want from me?” he asked.
Celerous had already been at ease, but the simple and joyful way Galen spoke and laughed made him feel even more relaxed. He decided that he liked the Towerkeeper. Though, Celerous pretty much liked everyone. He wondered how Galen ended up with the duties of watching the tower, but he figured he would ask later, if the question popped back up in his mind. Then Galen told him that he was bored out of his mind, and suddenly Celerous had the idea that he was probably the only person willing to take the job on.
"Training? That's like a staple of my life! Though, I guess that's a staple of every martial artist's life," Celerous laughed, "my parents were training me from the day I could walk!"
Funny enough though, it hadn't been until recently that he realized that his parent's training hadn't been worth a whole lot. He'd barely been out on his own for a few weeks, and already, his power had skyrocketed. Well, at least compared to what it once was. He'd never tell her, because he'd never live it down, but his mother had been right: no amount of training on a farm would prepare him for a real fight.
Galen mentioned his weights, and Celerous rolled his shoulders reflexively.
"Yeah, to be honest, I didn't realize how high up this tower was. I might have left my weighted shirt behind, but by the time I realized how much climbing I had to do, I was too far up. I supposed I could have taken it off and just let it drop, but I was worried that someone might be at the base of the tower. Didn't want to accidentally kill someone with a weighted shirt, you know?"
Celerous gave a lighthearted chuckle, before furrowing his brows at Galen's last two questions.
"Hmm. I didn't really come up here to ask for anything, just wanted the experience and work out from it," Celerous noticed the sword on Galen's back, and suddenly he had his request, "You know, despite having a sword, I don't actually know how to properly use one. Would you mind teaching me a bit, or pointing me to who taught you if you can't?"
He rubbed the back of his head, a little embarrassed at admiring his shortcoming.
Saiyans were always into fighting. It was very interesting to the human just how much of a warrior race they actually were and that made him chuckle: he was yet to find a saiyan who wasn’t into fighting in some way. Some were ruthless killers, while others just enjoyed the thrill of the fight. He also finds it funny how people never realize just how tall the tower is before trying it. Galen’s place was above the clouds and that was enough of a clue: nobody down there could see it with their eyes but he liked the fact that people still took on the challenge; it was a good change of pace for his daily routine.
But fate works in mysterious ways. Celerous had no proper goal when he climbed that tower and yet he found a fellow swordsman there. Galen chuckled a bit with his words and his smile widened quite a bit. ”To tell you the truth, I’ve learned a bit with the monks of Orin Temple, but I refined my swordsmanship with a few scrolls I found, talking about an ancient style called Kikoukenjutsu Sword School. In short, I kinda learned on my own.” he revealed. ”And sure, I wouldn’t mind teaching you. Come, follow me to the upper floor. We have more space there.” he said as he began walking towards the stairs in order to reach the place he told Celerous about.
Once there, Galen unsheathed his blade from the scabbard. The broad sword looked quite ordinary, but at the same time, the way he handled it showed the mastery he held over the blade, making the kind looking man look oddly dangerous with it. ”If you can turn into a super saiyan, I would ask you to do so.” he casually said, as if he was completely accustomed to witnessing that legendary form.
"Thank you," Celerous bowed once again, though it was a bit more relaxed and casual this time, "I'd be honored to learn from you."
Celerous had heard of Orin Temple, though he'd never been out to East City himself. Supposedly, the temple housed warrior monks or something of the kind, but he wasn't sure if those stories were true. Galen sure didn't look like a monk, in fact, Celerous thought he kind of looked like a farmer. But, Galen's background was none of his business, and he wiped the question from his mind as he let the swordsman lead him through the Tower. The staircase seemed a bit tight to Celerous, but that might have been because of his bulk.
The idea of this sword school, what had Galen called it? Kikoukenjutsu Sword School, that was it. Celerous didn't know a thing about it; didn't even recognize the name, but he was already excited. Galen said he'd learned from just scrolls, which meant he never had a teacher to show him the ropes. Yet he'd managed to master it to a degree that he felt comfortable teaching it to others. The degree of pure innate skill it took to learn without proper instruction...
'He must be some kind of fighting genius!'
To say that Celerous was excited would be an understatement. He was ecstatic! His parents had managed to teach him strength, but neither of them had been skilled in a proper martial arts style. To be able to learn, even a little, got his heart pumping. That, and his Saiyan blood always burned for a fight.
When they reached the top, Celerous made sure to stand a few meters away from Galen, and drew his sword. The human drew his own, and just the way he smoothly brought it out of the scabbard made Celerous blink in awe. He could tell, right there and then; Galen wasn't just proficient enough to teach him the Kikoukenjutsu Sword Style, he had outright mastered it.
And if that wasn't impressive enough, Galen had just casually asked him to go Super Saiyan. Casually. Though he had heard the stories, Celerous had never seen a Super Saiyan in his life, and he certainly wasn't one himself. But it seemed the Towerkeeper had more than a little experience with them. His heart raced once more; he was going to fight a man who had witnessed the power of the legendary transformation of the Saiyan race.
"I'm afraid I'm just a farm boy. I'm certainly no Super Saiyan, but I do have the means to boost my power a little."
Celerous clinched his teeth, and tightened his muscles. He raised his power, and once it reached its limit, he pushed at his core for more. He let out a struggled grunt, that turned into a yell not unlike a battle cry, and he felt power surge from within his being. His brown hair rose, and the bang shadowing his face split in two, and the new bang closest to the crown of his head stood up a little. A white aura swirled around him, and Celerous let out a breath.
"Will this do? I can push my power a little higher if need be, but it'll come at a cost of speed and mobility."
Celerous stood with his sword held in front of him with both hands, patiently awaiting Galen's answer. Or his attack. Whichever came first.

Galen blinked twice in surprise when Celerous said he was just a farm boy. That was a first! A saiyan who was also a farmer, just like he was?! That sounded so… human! Maybe Celerous was born and raised on Earth and had some traces of humanity in him, maybe he was even an hybrid, which helped make him more human – not that it helped that saiyan named Carva anyway – but anyway, he was happy to have found someone who had a close background with his own, it made Celerous look almost familiar. Following that came the revelation that he could not go super saiyan, but he could definitely increase his power and so he did, managing to enhance it about fivefold, which was quite impressive on its own and Galen chuckled. ”Back then I could only increase my power three times at most… Hehehe… That saiyan blood… It’s really impressive!” he thought to himself.
”Well… I guess this will do. I can control my power a bit as long as I don’t use any techniques, so I will try to match yours. Truth be told I’m not that good on suppressing hehehe… I’m also a farm boy who climbed his life’s ladder and became the Master of this tower. And oddly enough, being the Keeper of this place also involves some farming skills, so… I guess even those like us, with such a humble background have our place in this world.” and he truly seemed to believe in every word he was saying. In any case, Galen closed his eyes for a second and his energy signature began to lower to nearly half of his original power.
[Ki Suppression. PL: 90.000]
”Alright, that should do it! We are even I think, with some minor power fluctuations.” he said as he opened his eyes and entered in a powerful stance that looked rather menacing.
”This is the traditional Kikoukenjutsu Sword School stance, created by the legendary warrior named Trunks Briefs. He was a half-saiyan from seven hundred years ago.” he revealed giving Celerous enough time to try and mimic the stance.
As he felt Galen slowly lower his power, Celerous couldn't help but blink in surprise. Galen was probably one of the most important people on the planet, and yet, he'd started out as a simple farmer? Just as Celerous himself had? That tidbit of information filled the hybrid with hope. Maybe he could be meant for something. Something other than digging in the dirt, and trembling in fear before the might of others. An image of Plasma ran through his head, only for a second. He pushed it out of his mind, and began to wonder if, no, began to believe that he could surpass the blue bug.
Hell, maybe he could become the warrior of legend. The Super Saiyan.
When Galen dropped into his sword stance, Celerous knew for sure; this man was a master of the blade. The Human that had seemed so unassuming only moments before, suddenly became a danger. Warning sirens went off in Celerous's head, and had this been any other situation, the hybrid would have feared for his life. Lucky for him, this was just a bit of training.
Hearing that the person who invented the Kikoukenjutsu Sword Style, or at least the stance, was a hybrid like him was shocking. Celerous was no history major of course, but he didn't know of any Human/Saiyan hybrids that had done anything of note. To heat that at least one half-breed wasn't a slacker, and that they had done something useful was inspiring. Invigorating, even.
Celerous dropped down and tried to mimic the stance Galen was in. It took him a second, as he had positioned his feet wrong at first, and he had to lower his blade a bit to match Galen. Once he was sure he was in the proper stance, or as close as he could get with his lack of training, Celerous nodded to Galen.
"Okay, I think I'm ready."
He waited patiently for Galen to strike, making sure to focus as intently as possible, so that he might learn the sword strokes that went with the stance he was in.
The stance Celerous displayed was far from good, but it made Galen remember the days when he was an amateur himself and he chuckled, knowing that if due training the hybrid would be able to become an accomplished swordsman too. ”You will improve as we go. One word of warning, though: without a proper handling of the blade, no matter how strong you are, you will be bested. Swords require no strength to be used, they don’t require a great deal of speed. All the require is finesse and this is what you are supposed to be aiming for!” he said before dashing forward, read to throw a quite obvious strike to his left flank. Galen made that on purpose, but put all his skill behind it so, even though it was a clear attack, it would still prove itself to be quite difficult to handle.
”See what I mean?!” he exclaimed as he attacked with an excited smile on his face; even though he was a human, Galen liked to fight almost like a saiyan. Maybe he learned that through acquaintanceship with the warrior race.
The attack aimed at his left thigh was so obviously telegraphed, that Celerous was surprised when he felt the rap of the flat of Galen's blade. He blinked. Celerous had brought his own sword down to block it, and certainly should have been able to. Galen, suppressed as he was, was just as fast, and just as strong as the hybrid. The blade hadn't moved any faster than his own, nor did Galen swat his attempted guard aside with a powerful stroke. He had circumvented his block altogether!
"Holy- What- How did you do that?!"
To say that Celerous was at a loss for words, or almost was, would be an understatement. He couldn't fathom how Galen had managed to land his blow. Celerous had kept his eyes peeled on Galen's blade, and though it was obvious that he had maneuvered it around his own, he never saw it even shift away or around from its interned target. This was the finesse that Galen had mentioned, and it almost seemed like magic to Celerous. He wanted to know, wanted to understand how to fight like that.
"That's amazing! I know you said finesse was the most important thing in swordplay, but, I never even saw your blade move around my own!"
He patiently awaited Galen's explanation on how to achieve such a feat. This was it! This was a real fighting style, and not the sluggish punches he had traded while training with his mother. He wondered how long Galen had been practicing the blade, and what it took to achieve that mastery. Galen was, by his own admission, a simple farmer just like him! If he could master such a unique fighting style, and land blows like that against an opponent of equal strength, just through finesse alone, then why couldn't Celerous?
There wasn't a shred of doubt, or apprehension, in the hybrid's mind. He was going to learn the blade, no matter the effort and no matter the cost. He owed that to his family, and his Saiyan heritage. Hell, he probably even owed that to Galen. The human didn't have to spend his time showing a newbie a few moves, but he had agreed to anyhow. Celerous was determined to absorb the lesson, so that Galen's time wouldn't be wasted.
As it should be expected, Galen managed to hit Celerous, even though he did his best to block it. The hybrid saiyan did manage to reduce part of the impact he was about to receive, as he forced Galen to do a small maneuver with his blade in order to hit him, but nothing too great and, in the end, the hybrid was impressed and the human chuckled in satisfaction as he was inquired how he managed to pull that stunt. ”I told you. You just need to handle the blade correctly. It has to be a part of you, not an object you are holding with your hands. If you don’t see it like an extension of your arm, then you are done for, you already lost.” he began explaining. Then, he showed his grip to Celerous, so he could see the details.
His hands weren’t so tightly holding the hilt; instead he was holding it like an umbrella, putting more force with the pinky and ring finger, almost no force with the middle finger and absolutely no force with the index and thumb. ”That’s how you hold a blade. And more than the form, you need to thing as if you are holding an egg you cannot break until you hit your opponent. This will help you acquire a better control of the sword, as well as speed, power and will also save your stamina. You will be able to achieve a deadly force without breaking a sweat, do you get it, Celerous?” he asked.
Galen mentioned "[holding] the blade correctly," and Celerous frowned for a second. He knew he was a complete novice when it came to the blade, but he never imagined that he'd actually be holding it wrong. Or rather, that he shouldn't be "holding" it at all. It wasn't a thing to be grasped between his hands, like a bag or a stick, but rather it should be a part of him. Not like a weapon at all, but as if the blade was actually his fist itself. Galen brought his hands up for the hybrid to inspect, and Celerous scrutinized the way the man held the hilt. It wasn't held tight, merely firm, and looked like the lower fingers of his hand were doing most of the work. He did his best to imitate it.
“An egg huh? So I don’t want to squeeze the hilt until the moment I strike then? I think I understand.”
The way Celerous was gripping his blade felt weird, to be entirely honest. The handle was not squeezed, more like gripped in his hands with the same strength he would use to shake someone’s hand. Light, but firm. He took a step away from Galen and lowered himself into the ready stance that Galen had just demonstrated. Keeping his blade out in front of him, with the pommel raised above his bellybutton, Celerous brought the blade up. Once his left hand had reached eye level, he brought it back down quickly, squeezing the hilt only as he did, and noted that the simple motion seemed much easier to do than before. It still felt slightly off to Celerous, and he turned to look at Galen.
“Trying to put force into a sword stroke with my dominant hand feels off when I grip my blade like this. Is my left hand meant to provide the strength of the blow, while my right hand guides the blade instead?”
He held up his grip for Galen to inspect, a little confused that putting strength behind his last sword stroke had been easier to do with the hand lower on the grip, and harder with the one above it.
Celerous was a quick learner and Galen was proud of that and he was even impressed the hybrid managed to reach conclusions on his own, much akin to how the human learned how to properly handle a sword and that made him chuckle and nod. ”That’s exactly it! Once you learn how to properly hold the sword, your body will flow much butter and be able to understand the concept of sword, body and energy as one, which is one of the pillars of swordplay.” he explained and shortly after that his smile acquired a quite mischievous look as he got back into his stance, only this time looking far more dangerous. ”Once you understand that you will be able to use this technique.” he paused for a second, before vanishing at an incredible speed.
”Sword Slash!” he shouted as he attacked. The name may sound lame, but it perfectly described the attack, which consisted in a series of swift strikes in close range. Galen made sure he would only hit with the blunt side of his blade, otherwise Celerous would be into some serious danger. Hopefully the hybrid would be able to understand from looking at it.
Teaching: [BG][OT-1] Sword Slash: The user performs a series of swift sword strikes within close range of their enemy. [25% Damage]
Satisfied with Galen’s praise, Celerous swung his blade a few more times, marveling at how much smoother his form seemed to be. The blade felt lighter in his hands, no not lighter, just… perfect. Like the weight was balanced for him. The exertion in using it had been diminished greatly. The strangeness of the new way he held the hilt melted away, and the sword seemed to just fit into his hand as if it had been molded specifically to rest in his palms alone. He grinned. This was what he’d been looking for! Proper instruction, in a proper fighting style!
Celerous turned to Galen, as the human mentioned something about a technique. He assumed the Kikoukenjutsu stance once more, but Celerous got an eery feeling from the swordsman this time. His eyes widened; Galen was about to show him something dangerous. The hybrid felt his blood begin to pump faster. He waited patiently for Galen to strike, but then he vanished. And in a split second, he was back, far closer to Celerous than he had been before. The Towerkeeper swung his blade so fast that Celerous could barely follow it, and the hybrid was sure that the only way to avoid whatever was coming would be to use the Instantaneous Movement technique he’d learned.
But he instead opted to stay still. He knew Galen wouldn’t strike to serious maim or kill him. Celerous focused his eyes on Galen’s movements, and did his best not to flinch as the flat of Galen’s swift blade struck him several times in several different areas. He made a note to remember the order of the pains; and with a grin, he knew that he could roughly replicate the move. Or, at least, he could make an attempt.
Once Galen’s assault on him had ended, Celerous took a hefty leap away from the human.
“Alright, I think I get the idea behind it! Here I come! Sword Slash!”
He dropped into the stance Galen had taught him, and then as if using his Instantaneous Movement, vanished. He reappeared right in front of the Towerkeeper, and let out a flurry of strokes with his blade, intending to replicate the move in its entirety. He knew Galen could probably block them with ease, but Celerous made sure to use the flat of his blade to strike just in case. WC: 394 TWC: 3300
