(Heavy weights on!)
Cornel had brought them to a large, rocky wasteland, far from anybody people or buildings. If Jie Shan closed his eyes and focused, all he would be able to sense was the ki signature of his old captain, who stood before him. At least Jie Shan thought that Cornel stood before him. It was kind of hard to tell with the blindfold that the captain had insisted that he wear. Not that he blamed the captain, but it was almost kind of silly. They had the technology to block out the Blutz Waves. Or, Jie Shan thought, he could just not freaking look at the moon that radiated Blutz Waves down on Natto.
“Well, Jie Shan,” said Cornel, finally speaking, “I’m sure you’re wondering why I had you wear that blindfold.”
“I am, Cornel,” said Jie Shan, only slightly annoyed, “It seems kind of… primitive. And unnecessary.”
The older Saiyan laughed. “Well, you’re not wrong, boy. It is pretty low tech, and maybe a little unnecessary, depending on how you look at it. But trust me, Jie Shan, I have a reason. And I like to think that it is a good one.”
“Well,” groaned Jie Shan, fiddling with the blindfold, “Tell me, then.”
“I was getting there,” growled the captain, “Patience is sometimes needed, boy. Now, where was I? Right, I’ve got it. See, back when I was around your age, I also got it in my head that I needed to learn to control the latent power of the oozaru. It’s probably the best way to boost one's power as a Saiyan. You know, considering not all of us can become Super Saiyans, what with their fancy golden hair and all. You know, one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen is the old Super Saiyans, back during the days before the Alliance…”
Jie Shan sighed. The Captain was rambling now. He had a habit of doing that, especially when old war stories came up. Still, Jie Shan thought, it was interesting. Super Saiyans… Jie Shan had to admit, he entertained the notion of what it might like to become one one day, join the ranks of those legendary warriors. Could hybrids do it? He often wondered that. His father wanted him strong. Did that mean that his father wanted him to be super?
“Anyways,” coughed Cornel, “That’s enough beatin’ around the bush on my part. Back to what I was saying. When I was your age, I set my mind to conquering the beast inside. Now, I happened to mention this to my father one day. He nodded and grunted. That was often all he ever did. He was more of a man of action, than a man of words. This was made even more obvious by the fact that one night he decided to kidnap me and blindfold me, with that very same blindfold that you’re wearing now. I hope it doesn’t smell too bad, by the way.”
Cornel barked with a short laugh, “Anyways, my father did it to me, his father did it to him, and now I’m doing it to you, even if you aren’t my kid. The way I see it, it might as well be tradition. And besides, I think it makes it more personal as well. You need to really get in touch with your inner beast if you want to master it.”
Jie Shan frowned. The captain had a point. This was something of a personal journey for him. And his heart skipped a beat at the mention of tradition. Was this some kind of family ritual for Cornel?
“Heh, why don’t you save this for your own kids?” Asked Jie Shan with a small grin.
“Don’t have any, that’s why. And I don’t think I’ll ever have any. So, you’re the next best thing.
Potana already took care of her’s on her own, and I don’t think Carota has what it takes to master the raging ape. I mean, I could just leave you out here…”
“No, no,” said Jie Shan quickly, “There’s no need for that. It’s just… Thanks, Cornel. That means a lot.”
“You’re welcome, Jie Shan. Hopefully, I didn’t make a wrong choice with you. Now, take off that blindfold. We’ve got work to do.”
Jie Shan nodded and lifted the blindfold from his eyes. For a moment, his vision blurred as his eyes struggled to adjust to the darkness of the outside. As his vision faded in, he saw Cornel standing before him, a wide grin on his face. It was nighttime, and the light of the moon illuminated the world all around them. Don’t look at the moon yet, he reminded himself. Not until Cornel gave the word for it.
“Alright, Jie Shan, remember what I told you back when we fixed your little tail problem…” Began Cornel, but Jie Shan would not let the man finish.
Right, I got it. Will power. Trust me, captain, I have got that in spades. I’ll have this giant ape mastered in no time flat. You won’t even believe it,” said Jie Shan with a touch of confidence. Or was it arrogance?
“Heh, I'll believe it when I see it, kid. Just remember, you gotta seize control. I’ll be trying to keep you in check with my own oozaru form, but an uncontrolled oozaru, in my opinion, is even more dangerous than a mastered one. The oozaru, on its own, has no sense, no reason. All it is is a force of destruction packed into a giant form. It’s almost like you’re not even there any more when it takes control. But remember, you are there. And you can’t let it have your body.”
Jie Shan nodded, understanding perfectly. He was in control now, and he’d have to stay in control. With that, he lifted his eyes to the sky. And almost immediately, they found Natto’s moon, shining bright in the sky above, like some kind of fine, polished orb. And with that, his sight froze on it, as if his eyes were made of metal, and the moon a magnet. It was as if the beams of radiant light flowed through his eyes and through his body, down his spine, making its meandering way to his tail. It felt primal, like this is what nature intended. It felt good.
His hand trembled softly, and slowly he lifted it, as if reaching for the moon. It looked so big in the night sky, so full. It was almost as if it were just out of his reach… And suddenly, something in him snapped. That sudden good feeling turned violent. Primal rage bubbled up in him, washing over the levy of his soul, consuming him. Sparks flew from his entire body, his Elemi blood boiling right along with his Saiyan. His body seemed to grow hairy, and his body began to stretch. The last lucid thought he had was how glad he was that his armor was Saiyan-make. It could take the stretching.
And, almost as quickly as it had happen, Jie Shan was gone. All that was left was a raging great ape. Well, two if one counted the fact that Cornel had also just transformed beneath the radiant glow of the moon.
“Alright,” growled Ape-Cornel, his voice deep and booming, “Time to get down to business. Jie Shan, if you can hear me, remember: willpower is the key to everything! You’re a Saiyan! Act like it!”
And somewhere, deep below the surface, Jie Shan could hear him. He was just busy struggling with the beast for control. And the beast wasn’t having any of it. Ape-Jie Shan raged and raged, swinging like mad. And it turned its destructive gaze on Cornel. It stomped the ground, and dropped its head low. And then, it charged. It smashed head first into Ape-Cornel, pushing him back, the ground bursting beneath them. Ape-Cornel grunted in pain.
“Even with that weighted armor... “ Cornel roared-whispered, “So, you’ve been hiding this kind of power all along, have you Jie Shan? Well, color me surprised! Now, control it!”
Ape-Jie Shan roared in response, its body sparking in response. Even now, the Elemi blood in him was flaring up. Not that it could be helped. The rage was so intense. This rage was primal, as if it were a force that had always existed. This was the rage of an animal, a monster.
Ape-Cornel twisted, trying to grapple the raging beast, but it was no use. It was operating on pure rage and instinct. There was no stopping it as it rustled and fought against the grip of the captain ape. It swang its fists, smashing one into the face of Cornel. A roar of pain echoed off the wasteland. The beast blood was boiling in the both of them.
While the battle outside raged, there was another one being waged on the inside, in the pits of Jie Shan’s soul. He was fighting a battle with his inner beast, wrestling for control of his own self.It was an abstract force, yes, but he was still fighting it. And, it seemed as if he were winning.
Jie Shan could feel his own mind rising above the beast’s mindlessness. It was still resisting, trying to maintain control, but Jie Shan was winning. Willpower, he thought, just as Cornel had said. With it, he could do anything at all. Including controlling this damn beast.
And suddenly, he breached the veil of rage. There was a small moment of clarity as he froze. As he came too, suddenly he was aware that he was in the middle of trying to snap Cornel’s neck.
“Well,” he growled as he released Cornel, “This is awkward.”
“Yeah, it is,” roared Cornel, “For a second, I thought I was going to have to rip that tail clean off you. But glad to see you’re back in control, Jie Shan. How does it feel?”
“Honestly,” Jie Shan said with a flex of his ape muscles, “It feels good.”
“That’s good!” Exclaimed Cornel, “You’re a real Saiyan warrior now, Jie Shan. Not that you weren’t before, but no one can deny that you’ve got that Saiyan blood in strength now. I’m proud of you.”
And Jie Shan smiled as best he could. At least someone was proud of him.
