(Heavy weights on!)
Jie Shan was back in the gravity chamber, once again accompanied by his old commander, Cornel. Today, they meant to target forty times Planet Natto’s gravity. Jie Shan was ready. He had already donned his weights and done his stretching. At a certain point, preparations were wasted; Only through experiencing forty times gravity could he adapt to it. And at least he would be doing it with a partner, a respectable one. Cornel was cut from a different cloth than Carota.
And suddenly the gravity kicked in without warning. Odd, he thought , normally Rudieri gave him some warning before she turned up the gravity. But he shrugged it off. The Saiyaness was probably swamped with work. And Jie Shan added enough to that pile of tasks already. And he’d not pay it much mind as he was currently struggling beneath the new weight of the gravity. Jie Shan shot a glance towards Cornel. His face was beet red, but the older Saiyan was standing tall, unflinching. Jie Shan painted a mental image of the two of them: him sweating and gasping beneath the combined bulk of his armor and the enhanced gravity. Jie Shan chuckled lightly.
“What's so funny?” Asked Cornel with raised eyebrows and a stern look. Jie Shan shook his head and grinned.
“Nothing, just thought of something funny,” he explained.
“Funny?” Questioned Cornel, crossing his arms, “Why don't you tell me? I like funny things.”
“Oh? Said Jie Shan with a smirk, “Like your face?”
Cornel stroked his face, as if suddenly aware it existed. “Aye,” he said, “I have a face only a mother can love. Particularly your mother.”
Jie Shan’s smirk went lopsided. This, he thought, was not what he had in mind when he invited Cornel over to spar. But it still might be just as fun. “Oh please,” he retorted, “My mother isn’t into animals”
“If she were, that would explain how you were born,” shot back Cornel immediately.
“And,” spat Jie Shan, “It would explain the numbers of times I went ape on your ass.”
Cornel laughed, one of deep, belly laughs. “Those, my young bestial friend, are fighting words. I hope you're prepared to put your money where your mouth is,” growled Cornel.
Jie Shan’s smirk returned and his eyes narrowed. “I am,” he confirmed, “And I'm also ready to put my fist where your mouth is.”
Jie Shan raised his fists and slipped in to a Soy school stance, while Cornel took up a high stance from a style Jie Shan did not know. It didn't bother him much. Cornel knew a hundred different stances, or so he claimed, product of decades worth of experience in the field. However, Jie Shan was confident he could best Cornel no matter what arts he employed.
The two circled each other for a few moments, eyeing each other up in a staring duel that seemed to last an age and and a half. Someone was going to have to make the first move, and it seemed each was daring the other to move first. Carefully, Jie Shan stepped around the man, trying to circle around and catch him off guard, or to find some weakness in the stance, but Cornel was privy to the halfblood’s tactics, moving as if he anticipated each and every step Jie Shan was taking.
The air between them was heavy with silence, more heavy than their footfalls or the gravity that surrounded them. Jie Shan’s heart easy racing with anticipation. His arms itched, and his palms were sweaty. He just wanted to tear into the man, but he was playing the waiting game. He blinked one eye at a time, not wanting the older Saiyan to gain an advantage when his eyes were closed. Jie Shan was certainly watching Cornel’s eyes, but the older Saiyan man seemed not to blink at all. It was almost unnerving how unflinching the man’s gaze was. It made Jie Shan’s insides twist, like Cornel was looking in him instead of at him, searching for any signs of weakness. Jie Shan did not like it one little bit.
Finally, Jie Shan could wait no longer: he dashed at the older Saiyan, fist extended for a blow. Normally, Jie Shan would be leagues faster than Cornel, absolute streets ahead, but the gravity and his weights were dragging him down. Cornel raised an arm just in time to block the blow, but it was a solid blow. A mighty slapping sound resounded through the room as fist and forearm clashed. But Cornel was not going to let that go: he instantly shot a knee at Jie Shan, nailing him in the gut. It stung, but the stark difference between the two fighters meant that it did little damage at all. Still, Jie Shan stepped back, putting space between the two fighters, and they circled each other once more, but only for a moment.
It was Cornel who pushed the attack this time. The Saiyan came at Jie Shan with a flurry of blows: punches, kicks, body slams, trying anything to press the halfblood into duress. And none of it worked, to great effect. Jie Shan parried, blocked, and dodged, though the handicaps he had placed upon him made it hard. Finally, Cornel scream a bestial roar and reared his hands back. Ki began to pulse in the man’s hands and a second later he threw it at Jie Shan.
Jie Shan planted his feet in the ground and spread his arms. The ball crashed into him, burning him, but he held strong. As the energetic blow faded, Jie Shan scowled and frowned. “Hey!” He roared, “Be careful! I already had to repair this chamber once because the Overseer went Super Saiyan in it!”
Cornel stopped for a moment, holding still but not dropping his fists. “You fought the Overseer in his Super Saiyan state?” He asked, bewildered.
“I did,” confirmed Jie Shan, “Though he suppressed his energy for most of it..
“I see,” said Cornel with raised eyebrows, “Still, impressive. Not many people could make the claim to have fought a Super Saiyan.”
“Thanks, I know. I’m just the best,” Jie Shan joked with a smirk.
“Then you should be able to handle this!” Scream Cornel as he suddenly formed another orb of ki and shot it towards Jie Shan like a speeding bullet. Jie Shan blinked; He’d not been expecting that. The ball crashed into his face and burned into his skin. “Dammit!” He cried. His eyes stung as he blinked away the pain. “You ass…” grumbled Jie Shan, “I’m going to burn you right back!”
And Jie Shan had just the idea for how to do it. Often had he observed the oozaru form, and he was quite familiar with the abilities and strength on it. But one thing in particular had fascinated him: the flame breath of that form, something the average Saiyan seemed to lack the ability to do in their base form. But Jie Shan believed he had it all figured out. He had simulated lightning and electricity with ki. Why not fire? The halfblood took a deep breathe into his lungs and held it there for a moment, charging it with ki. In his mind’s eye, he pictured the swirling mass of ki and a fire to light it. Jie Shan reared his body back and held the position for a split second before leaning forward and exhaling with force!
Fire flew from his lips like spit, casting the chamber is a dull yellow-orange light. The fire spit across the room, speeding towards the older Saiyan. It crashed into him, the flames licking at his body, consuming him. And soon, it passed. And the older Saiyan was left standing there, worst for wear. Cornel coughed.
“Well, I didn’t expect to get burnt today,” groaned Cornel, “Next time, could you give me a little warning when you do that? Maybe I could wear something old next time.”
“What?” Asked Jie Shan, “And give away all my surprises.”
“You know, Jie Shan, that’s one thing I like about you. You’re always full of surprises,” chuckled Cornel with a smirk, “Strangely enough, it’s something I dislike about you too. It made being your commander a real pain in the ass. Do you know how many extra reports I’ve had to file because of your surprises?”
Jie Shan frowned. “Did you file a lot of reports on me?”
Cornel shrugged and shook his head, wiping the sweat from his head. “No more than anybody else. Why do you ask?”
“No reason,” mumbled Jie Shan, “But anyways, why don’t we take a break for today? I’m sure you’re eager to get out of the heat.”
Cornel smirked again. “Now that you say so, I really do. In fact, I need a cold drink to cool of. I’ll be hitting the bar. You wanna come with?”
“Maybe later. I’ve got some stuff I need to do,” said Jie Shan, waving his old commander off.
“Well, alright. You know where to find me if you wanna join up. Maybe I’ll get Carota or Potana to tag along,” said Cornel, thinking aloud.
“Right, catch you later,” said Jie Shan. And then he was left alone. That mention of reports… It did not sit well with Jie Shan. But he was just being stupid. He knew he could trust Cornel. He’d been with the squad through thick and thin. They were practically family. But, if his father was any indication, sometimes blood was not thicker than water. Jie Shan just hoped that in this case, that bond held true.
