Things were starting to return to normal again.
It had been a week since her vacation in the Southern Islands, and school was back in session. The work and extracurriculars kept her busy, too much to really think back on what happened back there. So other than her parents changing her training methods, there wasn't any indication that things had changed.
She was currently in her apartment with Haruto, the two of them alone in her room. This wasn't an unusual sight. With her parents being in the military, she was often left alone after school was over, and since it could get lonely, they often hung out together. Either here or over his house.
Today it was her place.
"Saeko?"
"Hm?"
"What did you get for question 2a?"
"Saeko got x = 4."
"Ah, I see."
Haruto hadn't yet finished his homework, so they couldn't really talk about anything until he had. To pass the time, she was watching anime on her phone, with earbuds in to not disturb him, although the volume was low enough for her to still help him out.
She hadn't even looked away from her phone, or pause the video, when he had asked that question, nor did she need to. The answers were all somewhere in her head, and she only needed to pull them out. After his question was answered, her friend started erasing something on his sheet.
Meanwhile, she was really intrigued by the anime she was watching. So much, that she was looking pretty close on her phone, from her position on her bed. In the video, a socially awkward and sleep-deprived high schooler had broke her umbrella, out in the heavy rain.
"Aah, Saeko feels so bad for her."
Haruto hadn't paid any mind to her commentary on the video, and she wasn't looking for any kind of agreement. Neither of the two were really paying any attention to the other, unless one of them needed each other. Some scribbling could be heard from her friend, while she continued to watch the video.
It was like this for another fifteen minutes. Haruto would ask her for an answer when he had finished a question, and either would erase, or work on the next one. While she would comment on the episode she was watching now and then, quite surprised by the plot going on.
Suddenly, she had paused the video, and sat up from the bed, stretching her arms. Curiosity soon took over, as she eyed her friend's paper, to see how he was doing. He was laying on a futon, and though she didn't need to, she had crouched down to his level to actually look at the paper.
It looked like he was nearly finished, and so far, she couldn't see anything wrong. Well that was good. She knew from people at school asking her for help, that math wasn't easy. He looked like he was doing better than others though. It had only been half an hour or so since he started.
"Saeko's going to get us something to eat. Would Haruto-kun like soda or juice?"
"It's Haru. And juice."
Like she always did, she smiled at the correction of his name. It was a measure of how he was feeling. If this work was making him tense, he wouldn't have bothered with correcting her. She had walked off to the kitchen afterwards, where the windows showed a view of outside.
They had came back from extracurriculars not too long ago, while the sun was setting. It was dark out there now, and she thought about how he always walked home after it was time for him to leave. They lived nearby each other, and while the neighborhood wasn't dangerous, she still worried.
It was mostly anime that influenced this worry of a possible danger at night. She didn't watch those kind often, due to how scary it was, but when she did, it was one of the most interesting things about humans she learned about. Although he was eating dinner here, maybe she could pack him some lunch too?
But what ingredients did she even have? She opened the fridge, finding that it was stocked plenty. Glancing around at each of them, they could probably eat a soba sandwich. And she could pack him some soup and rice to make a sort of tri-colored bento box for his lunch tomorrow.
With a plan in mind, she had started working on it. One of the things anime taught her, was that girls joined cooking clubs at school. It was the reason she was a member, and anyone could tell that she really put a lot of effort into her creations. That was simply her approach at life.
Although there was certainly still room for improvement. Haruto's mom was actually someone she aspired to be like. She had seen the way that woman cooked, whenever they hung over at his place, and it always left her in awe. The way she was able to multi-task was just inspiring.
She was always offered to help out, which she accepted sometimes, but it was more enjoyable to watch someone who was clearly a professional. When she had helped out though, her friend's mom often complimented her, and said some really nice things when she did as well.
Stuff like how she would make a great wife, and how his mom was glad Haruto had someone like her around. She was even asked about what she thought of Haruto, and how his mom wished he could find a girlfriend like her. It always made for an enjoyable conversation.
What his mom brought up, only made her imagine having some sort of clone or twin. That would be a lot of fun, and she would never get lonely when Haruto left. It took about another fifteen minutes or so for her to finish the soba filled sandwiches, which she placed on a wide plate.
His lunch for tomorrow wasn't ready yet however, and still needed a bit more time. After stirring the small pot she had brought out with the contents of the soup, she had also grabbed a few drinks from the fridge, before taking their food back to her room. Haruto seemed to be done when she got there.
He looked up from his phone, and suddenly his face had gotten red. Although she wasn't sure why. Anyone else would have noticed that because she only wore a tanktop and shorts at home, the apron she was wearing, made it look like it was just that. An apron which was bigger than she was.
"Saeko didn't make Haru-kun wait too long, right?"
