MEMORY LOG N° 066
The boy and the girl sat atop a cliff on that cold night in search for a prize among that dark sky. The girl spent the night complaining about the wind and the noises and insisted that their parents were worrying back home, but the boy insisted that it was all about the adventure. She interpreted his enthusiasm as complete disregard for her feelings, but still didn’t leave his side even if it meant that she would spend the rest of the night frowning. It was cold and it was dark, and everyone in the village warned about the dangers of wandering alone in the woods, but that night wasn’t a night like any other. That was the night were they would search for a shooting star.
– So, hey, what would you wish? – the sullen girl asked the boy, her fingers dancing among her hair locks. And the question made the boy blush.
– I… Well… Nothing special, I guess? – he averted her gaze, her face telling the exact opposite of his words. And of course she noticed that.
– Come on, Quartz, tell me! – she scowled – You’re making me run away from home to spend the whole night atop this stupid cliff after this star and wouldn’t even tell me your wish? You owe me at least that much!
– Okay… – he took a deep breath – But you promise you won’t laugh?
– Of course I wouldn’t laugh. Come on, Quartz, tell me already!
– Well, it’s kinda difficult to explain, sis – he smiled – But hey, have you ever stopped to think about how small our village is compared to the whole world??
And that question made a faint smile appear in the face of the frowning girl. A smile of mockery that her brother knew all too well, no matter how much she tried to hide to avoid hurt his feelings.
– Come on, Ammy, you promised! And you didn’t even let me finish what I was saying!
The young brother was quick to be offended and get on the defensive even if he was the nicer and most extrovert of the duo. He was a boy of strong convictions in a small village where everyone mocked him for his dreams, so he most of the time expected the worst whenever he would try to open himself. Even for his sister.
– I’m not laughing, Quartz, don’t make that face! – said that, obviously laughing. But she knew her little brother, more than anyone, and knew the crap he was getting from the other boys – I find it cute, you know? You’re different from the others, bro. You’re even different than me, so I always admired that.
– Of course you don’t – he crossed his arms – You didn’t even heard my wish before saying that, you’re only trying not to hurt my feelings. You wanna know? I’m never ever bringing this conversation again!
– Hey bro, stop that – she frowned again – I really don’t give a crap about this travelling the world stuff or whatever, and you know all too well that I don’t care about those wishing stars either! I’m only here because it seemed important to you, and for me it was already fine that way. The only thing we have in this world is each other, bro, so even if your dreams are stupid or whatever they’re still yours. So they’ll be important to me too, even the ones I can’t understand!
The boy blushed again, averting his gaze from his sister and staring uncomfortably at the ground.
– Sorry, Ammy – he took a deep breath – But you promise that you won’t mock me?
– I can’t promise anything, Quartz. I’m your dumb sister, you know, I don’t get most of the stuff you do. But would you still tell me your wish?
The brother stared at the sister and the sister stared back. An uncomfortable silence rose between them, and the boy seemed to blush even more.
– Ok, Ammy, that answer I can get behind – he tried to smile, but it was not a sincere one – We only have each other, you know.
Quartz then lay down upon the ground and gazed the sky again.
– I’m gonna wish to be free, you know? To get to know the whole world, to get as far from this stupid village as I can. I know we’re poor and I know that I don’t really have a plan, but I would accept anything as long it gives me a purpose to move away from here. Anything, even being abducted by some secret organization or something like that.
– Come on, Quartz, don’t even joke!
– Sheesh, sis… How unlikely would that be?
He laughed, but she didn’t. The girl respected the boy’s enthusiasm but couldn’t quite share them, and he knew it very well. She made a promise to their dying mother to always protect her delinquent brother and help keep him away from trouble, but Quartz was not like her or her parents. He had ambitions, he had dreams. He was different from the whole village.
– So, Quartz – she too laid down – Do your wishes include us being together?
But her brother stood in silence.
Android 22 stared blankly at the nothing of her room while replaying her old data logs in search for something useful about her past and her mission. That record about the boy and the girl had drawn immediately her attention, but in the end she couldn’t quite comprehend what it was all about and deemed the information irrelevant. What she needed to know was the location of the Dragon Balls to wish her commander back to life, but something made her hesitant to trust her comrades to help her in the most glorious mission. Plasma was too a creation of Red Ribbon, but what about the Maker? Was he truly loyal to the memory and the cause of the great founder?
As those questions poured her AI, she couldn’t help but think of that two humans gazing at the stars and talking about wishes and dreams. She knew the girl couldn’t protect anyone that was important to her and that none of them had a happy ending, but what of it? Were any of them Commander Red? Did they get killed by the saiyan? If not… Why would she care?
She was born to serve the Maker, and her place was only to obey.
