MEMORY LOG N° 062
There were two servant kids in that big white courtyard, a boy and a girl. The girl was on her knees mopping the floor while the boy comfortably sat on a window next to her, obviously slacking off while he could be doing anything more useful.
– You know, sis, this job sucks – the boy laughed. But the girl did not.
– So what, Quartz? – she frowned – It’s not like we have a choice of something like that. If you have all that time to complain, why don’t you use some of that to clean the dishes like we agreed on the chores division?
The boy sighed.
– Clean the dishes? Come on, sis! I’m gonna grow up to be a cool astronaut or something like that, I don’t have time to clean the dishes!
– And yet, look at this big astronaut. Complaining and complaining while his sisters does all the stupid jobs to keep him fed.
The smile on his face went away the instant he heard his sister talk, and he didn’t sound all too pleased.
– You know what? Fuck you, sis! Fuck you and all this servant crap!
He kicked the bucket as far away as he could, making a mess of spilled water and cleaning products all over the floor his sister was supposed to clean. And after that he simply left with a sullen expression, taking heavy steps and not even daring to look back. The sister stood up and went after him, not even trying to hide how furious that tantrum had made her, and quickly grabbed her brother in the arm before he could go away.
– What the hell, Quartz?! What's your problem?!
She was the level headed one of the duo, but also the surly and bossy one while her brother were a little more simple minded with big dreams and a little disregard for their current financial state. He wanted to risk everything to go crazy big in life while she discouraged every dream of his and tried to inject some pessimism in that airhead of his. It was she that insisted that they made a living doing menial tasks in exchange to something to eat while no other opportunity rose in front of them, but he insisted that the village that they resided could go to hell for it would bring no opportunity to them. He wanted to go to West City, lair of the fabled Capsule Corps and all its magic inventions, but every time he dreamed about that she would remember him that they didn’t had even a penny to pay a rent for a home, let alone money to make such a crazy trip. And the reality that all his dreams would go to waste was making the boy increasingly sullen and depressed, but the sister knew that there was nothing that she could do.
Quartz downed his head and not even tried to talk back, knowing that he was on the wrong. Wrong to hope, maybe. Wrong even to think that someday he could be something better than a servant.
– I’m gonna clean the dishes, Ammy. Leave me alone.
But the sister didn’t let him go.
– …An astronaut, huh? What is an astronaut? – she was… Smiling?
– It’s a space explorer, you dummy! Everyone knows that!
– So apparently I’m not everyone?
– You know nothing, sis! You don’t even have a dream!
– Hey, c’mon! Of course I have a dream!
– So… What is it? – he too smiled.
She dreamed many things, just like her brother. Unlike him, however, she gave up hope the moment their mother died and they were left just to themselves, so while Quartz seemed all the time ready to do something crazy and disappear without a trace, she just calmly accepted that there were things in life that she was never meant to have.
– The landlord’s son, you know… He’s giving me the looks for some time, he even proposed to me last week, bro. I think I’m gonna accept.
– What the fuck, sis?! I thought you hated that!
– Since I was a child I wanted to be a princess, don’t you remember? I’m gonna wear a pretty dress for my marriage and we’ll live comfortably for the rest of our lives, it doesn’t matter if he’s stupid or me makes me sick. People like us don’t get to pick the way in which we’ll live.
She tried to smile, but her brother easily saw through her. That faint and insincere smile, the exact same that she gave every time she forced herself to do something she clearly didn’t want for the supposed sake of the duo. And Quartz absolutely hated that in her.
– The bastard just wants to fuck you, goddammit! It’s obvious that there will be no marriage, you stupid! How could you fall for that?!
This time it was Ammy that dared not to talk back. She hung her head in shame, choosing silence rather than accept that she was naïve while trying to sound mature, and suddenly burst into tears. Seeing her sudden reaction, Quartz became immediately furious.
– You didn’t, you know… Did you?!
And she hugged him.
– Goddamit! I’m gonna rip that fucker’s face!!!
The boy pushed his sister away, his face covered in anger. She tried to talk sense into him, pleading to consider a job and a place to eat over her petty feelings, but it was too late. And the rest, well, the rest is story.
That boy and that girl talking about insignificant things again, but why would her databank insist in showing that every time she tried to search her memory for some relevant information about the mission or Commander Red? Should this malfunction continue, she would need urgently a reboot to wipe her hard drive of any unnecessary information, but who could she trust to tamper with her AI? The Maker? She could be pretty sure that the Maker was still the enemy, even if she didn’t had any proof. Could this too be part of the malfunction?
In her hands was the closest thing she had to a friend in the whole galaxy, the plastic doll with cat-like features named “Konnani-chan”. Every night she would sneak in her master’s stash and abduct the catgirl figure for a stroll even if she knew that it would never speak back to her. Both of them were lifeless dolls in service of the Maker, and both had never known another master in their whole life. The android knew that her friend didn’t truly exist, but thinking about their similarities always brought her closure.
– KONNANI-CHAN. YOUR DRESS IS BEAUTIFUL.
