In the darkness of the night, Meridia would be left unable to sleep. She simply remained fully awake and aware of her surroundings. The Merchants being all asleep she would be the only one to stand guard and protect them while they rested. One of the merchants would wake up and walk up to the mercenary as they noticed her. “What are you doing still awake, I doubt that anything would attack us, we can see clearly all around us and nothing is even close.” He said, confused as he didn’t expect anyone to be awake at such a time. Meridia simply turned around to look at the confused man. “Someone has to stand guard, this is why you pay me. You might see nothing but it doesn’t mean that nothing sees you. There is plenty of dangers in this desert, apart from bandits and sandstorm you could die in a hundred ways. All the more brutal than the others. But even if I wished to sleep, the answer is simple I cannot.” She sighed and rubbed her head realizing she might have sounded rude to the man. “I thank you for your worry but I will be perfectly fine, I have trained for this and have been doing this job for a year now.” She smiled softly and patted the ground next to her. “Feel free to sit if you also cannot sleep but the journey will be long tomorrow.” The man would laugh softly and take a seat next to her. “Why are you even still in this wasteland, there is nothing but sand and greedy business man around here. Looking at you I’d imagine you to be the type to explore and move around. Not to stay in this hell hole for what, a year you said?” He shook his head and looked at the night sky. The sky would be filled with stars, the perfect weather allowing them to be all clear and every single one of them being of an extreme beauty. “The night sky has to be the only beautiful thing around here.” Meridia would giggle and nod in approval. “Indeed the night sky is very beautiful here when the winds are calm. It allows you to see every star visible to the human eye. I would travel more but jobs keep me here, the pays are good and I wouldn’t know where to go.” She smiled to herself. She couldn’t remember the last time someone had taken the time to sit with her and talk about things other than money and weapons. She quite appreciated the man’s company as he seemed careless about her being a mercenary and instead would talk about the simplest things of life. “I haven’t introduced myself properly but I’m Jean.” He would look at her smiling. She giggled softly. “Meridia, uhm I’m Meridia.” She responded awkwardly. They both laughed and spent the rest of the night talking about life and earth. It turned out they were both admirers of the different type of lands that would cover earth.
The sun would begin rising slowly, shining bright upon the sand dunes early in the morning. The usual heat would settle in quite quickly. Meridia would get up, noticing that the rest of the merchants had woken up. “Take a moment to eat and drink and we will depart soon, the day will be long and dangerous, please make sure to pay close attention to your surroundings and follow closely.” She spoke in a stricter tone once again, hoping that they would follow her directives. She nodded and sat back down for a moment, letting the merchants have their meal before the long day. She sharpened her sword and arrows, wondering if she would even have to use them. She hoped not but she was ready to if she had to. The Merchants would eat and stand up behind her, ready to continue their journey. She would give them the signal to walk as they began their journey. The sun would shine bright against them but it was bearable. She walked beside Jean, talking to him during their travel. “I hope you can bear with the heat, it can get pretty hot it is not unheard of for merchants to fall unconscious.” She said teasingly as she had no issues with the heat herself. Jean would laugh and stretch. “Ah! This is nothing, I could stand in this heat for days if I felt like it! I doubt I ever will…because it is extremely uncomfortable and I feel like my tongue will dry off and become beef jerky but of course I can bear with it!” He responded before looking at her as they both laughed unable to believe anything of what he had just said. They would keep walking at a fairly fast pace, traversing a long distance before finally stopping to take a break. They would all sit to relax for a moment, setting their things down and making sure to hydrate themselves. Meridia would simply stand guard for an hour, allowing the merchants to regain their forces to continue the walk. “Well we managed to do a lot today and we aren’t even done. This is great we might arrive earlier than expected.” She would say turning to Jean who was standing next to her. ”Indeed it’s great, if we can do more we’ll manage to reach the city a day or two earlier than expected. You should work where we’re heading, the climate is a lot kinder than the wastelands. I bet it would suit you well. What would you even want to do if you find out you don’t want to escort grumpy merchants for the rest of your life?” he questioned her, giggling but very curious as to what she would actually like doing. Meridia would look up at the sky, she hadn’t thought about it very much but it was clear to her that her dream wasn’t to escort old men in a dangerous desert for the rest of her life. “I think I’d like to open a smithy, yes that would be nice. I’d settle down and do what I like.” She giggled thinking about how strange it must be for a mercenary to want to settle down. “Truth is I’ve never sold any of my weapons before, yet I created so many…and a lot of them I don’t use.” She would laugh and sigh sitting down for a moment to take a bite. After a moment of relaxing she would get up and cough to clear her throat. “We will continue walking now, for a few hours before the sun comes down.”
They would walk peacefully for the rest of the day, setting up camp once the sun began going down. Meridia would sit once more to admire the stars, this time Jean accompanying her. They watched the sky together and laughed about things together before Meridia stood up quickly signalling to Jean to wake the others. He would however not make it in time as a bullet hit him in the middle of the head, pulverizing his brain and his life. Meridia would draw her bow in shock and spotting a group of bandits in the distance she would begin firing at them. She had great accuracy and would be able to take out a few before they got into melee range. She then drew her blade and began fighting the bandits. She would be enraged as the only friend she had had for a few years now got murdered right before her eyes. She trembled in rage and held her blades with a titanic grip. Cutting at the bandits like butter, cutting them down and leaving them to rot here. After the fight she would guide the merchants to the nearest town in the middle of the night. She sighed and kept quiet to herself for the trip, as once they arrived she paid them back what they had given her to begin with and ran away. She definitely did not want to spend her time in the high hostility of the wastelands, making her way to a more peaceful place.
