Jie Shan sat in his quarter, sat in front of a monitor. He looked at it idly, his fingers tapping mindlessly at the keys of it. The Saiyan script slowly grey across the screen as he prepared his letter. He was typing something quite important. He was a Counselor, so of course, almost everything he wrote these days was of the utmost importance. But to him, this was even more important than his usual fare. He was planning on doing the Alliance a service.
Jie Shan, of course, wanted the best for the Alliance, to protect it as the Overseer had charged him with. And Jie Shan was powerful. If anyone on the planet could protect the Alliance, it was him. But the young halfblood was only one man. Once upon a time, he’d been part of a squad, serving the Alliance. And now it was time for him to be part of a squad again. But this time, things would be different. Jie Shan would lead this squad. And he needed warriors to be a part of it. A squad needed to be more than one person.
And that is how he found himself here this evening. It was early morning, after midnight. He was tired, but he could not let this go undone. The Alliance was relying on him. And on his future squad, wherever they might be. Jie Shan was not only looking for Saiyans. No, he was looking for people all across the universe, from all races, from all walks of life to be a part of his squad.
It would be extra-military. It would have to be, if he wanted offworlders. The Saiyan Alliance treated those without Saiyan blood as second class citizens. But Jie Shan knew better than to follow suit. His time as a mercenary with his mother had taught him just how powerful the other races of the universe could be.
It would be a challenge to recruit, especially offworlders. But Jie Shan was offering a chance at glory, a chance to prove oneself, a chance to be a part of something larger. He did not need an army; All he needed was a few good compatriots. People he could trust, people who would have each other’s back. Like his old squad. They were like family to him. And Jie Shan wanted to grow that family.
Finally, he finished his typing. When he finally sat back from the keyboard, a numbness overcame his eyes. Al he had left to do was send this Rudieri, and hopefully she’d be able to start her recruiting. He’d have her recruit from within the Saiyan Alliance’ ranks first, look for those with special potential to be something excellent. And then, hopefully, she’d cast a wider net and be able to find talent in the rest of the universe.
Hastily, Jie Shan sent the message and orders to Rudieri. With a sigh, he stood up and made for his bed. As he flopped into his bed, a sigh of pleasure escaped his lips. But it did not last forever. A weak electronic whine burst out from his nightstand. Damn, he realized, he’d left a broken scouter on his nightstand. He’d been fiddling with it, trying to repair it. He must have left it pointing right at his bed.
Jie Shan could not sleep with the noise of the thing. But he was far too tired to reach over and turn it off. He groaned, but before long, he had an idea… He would force his ki so low, the scouter would ignore him. Jie Shan concentrated, closing his eyes tight and focusing on the depths of his self. He jammed his power down and down, taking his control of his ki even further than before. And before long, he had forced it so low, the scouter clicked off.
Satisfied, Jie Shan put his head beneath his pillow and waited for sleep. He dreaded it, partly for the chance that the red-eyed giant might appear in his dreams once again, but he was willing to risk it. Sleep was the only escape he had from the wear and tear of the world. He needed to recharge, gather his strength. Because he was working towards a new tomorrow.
