Burning, cold red eyes stared down on Jie Shan. The halfblood shook beneath the gaze of the beast, quivered at the sight of the whip that it held in its hand. It was a giant, and the very sight of it turned Jie Shan’s skin to a pure sheet of goose bumps. Already, Jie Shan was not the tallest man, but the enormity of this creature made him feel like an ant, so insignificant that he might as well not even exist when compared to this goliath. It took a step towards Jie Shan, and the very earth shook with it. Step after step, it drew even closer, Soon, its massive lower body was the only thing Jie Shan could see. He had to crane his neck upward to even hope to gaze at the rest of the beast.
The beast came to a rest. But there was no rest for Jie Shan. It slowly bent down and wrapped its giant hand around the body of Jie Shan, squeezing as it went. Jie Shan was lifted through the air; It felt as if he was flying. The creature drew him close to its face, so that it was as if the halfblood were a bug beneath a magnifying glass. Jie Shan gazed into the eye of the giant, and it was as if he were looking into a cold sun. His eyes darted around the beast, slowly piecing together the monster’s true form. Thick, brown, and coarse hair ran over the entire creature, and a snout-like protrusion came from it’s head. Jie Shan shook as the beast roared and slowly lowered him towards the snout. He could see the maw of the beast in full: it was chock full of yellowed and razor sharp teeth, perfect for cutting people to pieces, or for biting into someone.
And it would seem Jie Shan was going to get the latter. The hybrid was lowered into the gaping mouth of the beast, surrounded by pointed bones and the pink walls of flesh. Slowly, the beast began to bit down and Jie Shan raised his hands to keep it from consuming him. He pushed and pushed, but the jaw of the creature only grew closer and closer together. The world around him grew dark as the light from the outside was shut out. It seemed that the young halfblood would be going on a trip…
…
Jie Shan awoke. Sweat poured down his face. His shirt was soaked through with the stuff too. He rose from his bed, placing his bare feet on the cold floor of the ship. A shiver ran up his body, turning his skin to goosebumps. The sweat of his body was like a river running over the rocks that were his gooseflesh.
“Just a dream,” whispered the halfblood, “Another nightmare.” He looked about him, to ensure that he was not, in fact, in the stomach of a raging monster. Satisfied that he was not, Jie Shan rose from his bed and began to pace about this ship. Strangely enough, he did not feel groggy at all. No, he thought, he suspected all the sleep had been chased from his body by fear. With a sigh, Jie Shan made for the ship’s computer, sitting down in front of it before long. Well, he thought, he might as well get some work done. The pale light of the monitor lit up his face and made his eyeballs ache, but he got down to work, slowly tapping away at his keyboard. At the rate he was going, it would be a long night.
An idea came to him. He could maybe make some money here. He had time, he had the funds. All it would take is for him to move some of his own money around… He pulled up a page on his computer, and began tapping away at his keyboard. In time, his idea began to take actual shape. He watches as numbers flashed across the screen, money going from his account and out into the world, flying away like so many birds. Jie Shan rubbed his eyes as he watched the numbers tick away. So, he thought, investing was much easier than he thought. He supposed even an upstart monkey like him could figure it out. Sure, he thought, it was boring as all Hell. But it might be well worth it. Anything to make a little extra money on the side.
Sleep danced as his eyes. Jie Shan rubbed his eyes once again and glanced down to the little clock at the bottom of the screen. A jarring through struck him: he’d been sitting here for over an hour. Finally, he thought, he might as well get back to sleep. No sense in watching the numbers tick by any more. Satisfied, Jie Shan rose from his seat. He staggered over to his bed and threw himself on to it. He sunk into the mattress and buried his face into the pillow. Slowly, Jie Shan’s mind left him and he drifted back to sleep.
…
Jie Shan laid in his bed on his ship, idly staring up at a data pad. Yes, he thought, that would be well enough. Or at least he thought so. The hybrid had never been on the business side of things before, so all of this was new to him. Before he had left the planet Natto, the young halfblood had decided to take it upon himself to make some investments. A whole slew of them, in fact. In a way, it was his own little business. He was going to let his money work for him, instead of working for money. He’d had some tucked away from his position as Councilor. The Saiyan Alliance provided him a salary, nothing grand, but enough for Jie Shan to live comfortably and to be able to store some away. So, it came naturally to him that he could augment his own income with a little investment. It was odd, he thought, to be able to see an accounts numbers increase without actively putting the money in there for oneself. It felt almost kind of… wrong, but he knew it was not. People did this all the time, and Jie Shan was just playing the game alongside them.
But Jie Shan had always been one to earn his money the old fashioned way, by actually putting in time and going to work, whether it be a desk job that the Alliance provided, or soldiering back when he was just a private, or even when he was a young mercenary traveling alongside his mother. But this investing, it was different. Jie Shan did not even need to look at it most of the time, he was simply fascinated with it and how money could generate more money, as if money were being born out of nothing or self reproducing like some kind of bacteria. It was more consistent than mercenary work and safer than soldiering. Well, he cautioned, it was certainly not as safe in its own ways. One wrong investment and a person could lose a lot of money on these kind of things. But, he supposed it was a small loss compared to that of losing one’s life on the battlefield, which Jie Shan had never really been itching to do.
However, noted Jie Shan, the art of investing was just as boring as the desk work that the Alliance had provided him. It was a world made of boring numbers and dull words arranged in such a way as to cause advanced boredom. He was sure of it. Once upon a time, Jie Shan had thought that he did not have the mind for such things, preferring to leave these kind of works to those who ranked above him in the military structure. But, as he climbed the ranks, he found out that the work itself was not actually that bad. No, he thought, anyone could do it. You could even train a monkey to do it, if one wanted to put the effort in. And he supposed that is why the Saiyan Alliance worked. A bunch of trained monkey sitting at a computer, tapping away, somehow making sure work got done. Well, he thought, put enough monkeys in front of keyboards and eventually they would figure out how to run a nation.
With a sign, Jie Shan sat up and set the data pad aside. He had work to do. Or rather, personal matters to attend to. He’d been planning on refining some of his skills today. And there was only one way to do it. Jie Shan rose from his bed and paced around the room, trying to think of the best way to even do this. Jie Shan, like many beings, could sense ki, the latent life energy of organic beings. However, his sense of it was limited. He could sense people within a rather limited range, and this was not enough for him. He needed more, he needed to be aware of his surroundings. He wanted to feel the entire planet.
Jie Shan came to a stop, and leaned against the wall. He shut his eyes tight, so hard that his brow creased. He felt the world around him, these southern islands of Earth. He felt the people, the animals, the tiny being that scattered all around him. But he pushed. He pushed and pushed, slowly trying to expand his mental net of the world. It resisted at first, but in time it gave way to his will. It was like someone flicked on a switch in his head. The entire world lit up around him, like so many lights on a computer screen.
With a sigh, he relaxed, his body no longer tense. That would do for now. He could feel all the people of Earth, and some people jumped out at him, like some kind of godly Jack in the Box. There were so many strong people here on Earth. It was not what he had expected at all. The people here… Some of them would put the strongest warriors of Natto to shame. Well, he thought, except for the Overseer. No, few people could compare to him. But it seemed as if he had not given Earthlings enough credit. They were quite the powerful people after all. Or at least their planet was home to the strong, he cautioned himself. He himself was here. But compared to some folks, he was still very weak. And he needed to be stronger.
