The feel of a fresh ship... it was something almost foreign to the Saiyan. Aside from the miscellaneous pirate station in space that he had intercepted back when he fought more space-based battles, his old beat up pod was all that Rutaba ever had to his name. It was quite a pitiful thing that he had practically discarded. Since then... well, all he experienced was Demalia's ship that he came to Planet Plant on. Now, he had commissioned himself a nice Mothership that was fitted out with an assortment of different add-ons to make it faster and hold more cargo within its depths. It was quite the huge jump of ownership but he couldn't say that he hated how roomy it was.
The Saiyan made his way into the meeting area of the mothership, his scouter beeping in his pocket quite loudly as he was given an express call from a member of the SDF. "What's up?" Rutaba asked as he put the call through on his scouter, sitting in a chair and leaning back as he had some time to relax if he was going to occupied for some time. "You finally answered! You haven't sent a report on your personal progress in months, our logs on you are vastly outdated. First, we need to do a power scan to make sure you've been keeping yourself fit. Our last logs have you set at... just under fifty-five-thousand. Is this still accurate?" the, presumably, Saiyan on the other side of the scouter call responded quite quickly causing Rutaba to wince. Has he really progressed so much since leaving Sadala...? He had over doubled his power since then! "R-Right. I'll get right on that." Rutaba could only respond with a bit of worry in his voice. If he hadn't gotten himself a high-end scouter... he was pretty sure the thing would blow the moment it scanned him.
It only took a minute for Rutaba to finish his scan, expressly sending the data over to the Saiyan on the other side who went silent for a while. "No way! Over one-hundred-thousand?! That can't be right..." the Saiyan spoke like he was utterly shocked, before calming down to continue. "I... can't question what the scouter says. I'll update this right away. Next up... have you made sure to practice in the fighting academy style lately? It's been so long since you've been off-world you have to keep up with that on your own." the Saiyan spoke quite bluntly, causing Rutaba to stop cold again. "No... thank you for reminding me. I'll review it all." was all Rutaba could really respond to that. He was run through the style by his captain so long ago, those memories were hard to think of. Tunnip and Azukai... by the divine it had been so long. "I see, well... make sure to get on to that. Next up-" the report continued on for quite some time, with very little of note happening from then on.
The call had ended, with Rutaba slowly turning his scouter off and slumping in his chair. He couldn't be so down in the dumps like this... everything was so long ago now. He had Demalia and she was his light, the dark shrouding the past shouldn't hold him down forever just because it was brought up again. "Alright... let's go back to that time." he mumbled to himself, finally finding the strength to stand and exit the mothership, walking far enough away that he wouldn't harm the ship or any people. He dropped into the fighting stance of the academy and reminisced...
"Keep up!" the voice of a grizzled, older Saiyan screamed at the now much younger Rutaba. Fist met stomach as the young Saiyan was slammed into the wall of the training chamber, causing him to groan out in pain, before a swift kick to the side launched him sideways onto the ground. "I... can't Captain Tunnip... all four of us together can't even fight you, how am I supposed to.. on my own..." Rutaba whimpered out as he was practically winded by the assault of his commanding officer.
"It's not about fighting me off, it's about making sure you don't hold your teammates back. Azukai is getting stronger than you every day! I thought you said you wanted to be the next King, right? With him as your Second in Command? If you stay this weak it'll be the other way around!" Tunnip barked out at Rutaba with a small smirk upon his face. His captain always had a way to be like that... aggressive at times but he sure was passionate. Tunnip was usually a brick wall who showed his emotions quite rarely, but in situations like this he was passion incarnate. "Now get up! Azukai learned the basics of this fighting style in only a month. You're so close to perfecting it, now come at me again! With the Rib Breaker technique!" the older Saiyan barked out once more, dropping into the Sadal Fighting Academy stance in preparation.
Rutaba could only return this in kind, slowly shuffling up to his feet and dropping into the stance himself. "Yes... Captain." he could only pant out these few words as the pain of being knocked down by such a strong opponent was still stinging throughout his body, practically stunning him. His Captain picked up on this pretty easily, causing the old man to smirk. "Don't worry... pain is a non-negotiable side-effect of combat. But if you keep training with me, you'll never be hindered by it again." the old man spoke with something that sounded kind of like a hyperbole... but what Rutaba didn't understand was the massive amount of pain to come if he truly wanted to become a true user of the academy style. That was for another time, however.
With the effects of his pain subsiding shortly after, Rutaba's ghostly aura flared up around his body as he'd launch himself directly at Tunnip, bringing his arm up by his side to aim a chop at the older Saiyan who would just block his strike with a simple grab of the boy's wrist. "No, you can't fight me like you're just sparring, you have to aim to take me down! Infuse energy into this one strike and hit me!" Tunnip barked once more as he'd kick Rutaba back onto the ground. "Again!"
Rutaba felt so defeated... but nobody had ever gotten better by just giving up every time they got knocked down. Rising to his feet once more, he'd drop into the stance once again just to rush at Tunnip as fast as he could, roaring loudly as he brought his arm back, his ki focusing into his hand entirely as he'd deliver a powerful chop that'd bypass Tunnip's defenses and lay a heavy blow into his ribs. "Take this!" Rutaba roared as his chop landed, causing him to immediately kick off backwards to gain some distance on Tunnip who was left gasping for air for a moment.
"Not bad... that was a mighty fine Rib Breaker! Though... I could still tell that your heart wasn't entirely in it against me. But surely you know how it feels to use it now..." the Captain grunted as he rubbed his side where his ribs were damaged. It'd be nothing that he couldn't heal in a pod later. Progress was far more important! "Thank you, Captain!" Rutaba would announce quite happily, beaming with pride and joy that he had got a technique somewhat down. "However, you aren't done just yet... you still need to perform the special technique of this fighting style. The Galick Cannon! Only then will you be up to Azukai's level." Tunnip grinned as he announced this to Rutaba, causing the young Saiyan to freeze up. He had never gotten the energy to pool over correctly. His beam always fizzled out shortly before it could make do with anything and that meant that he would get nowhere at the end of the day.
"I... don't think I can do it." Rutaba stated feeling quite defeated before he'd be lifted up by his training garb. "Are you really going to let a simple energy beam get the better of your dreams? You WILL use it today. Or you will use it never." Tunnip roared in Rutaba's face, dropping the young Saiyan on the floor again before jumping back. "You already used ki in your hands to perform the ribs breaker, you can do it again here. Place your hands by your side like so... and build up all the latent energy throughout your entire body." Tunnip instructed as he got in the stance for the Galick Cannon, a fuchsia-colored aura sparking up around his body.
Rutaba could only repeat the steps in his mind. What was he missing every time before? That was it... every single time he had tried before, he tried to force the energy to his will and fire it out immediately. While that produced a result, it had no build-up to maintain the energy that he was putting out. Focusing on every little bit that he could, Rutaba's eyes closed as he focused on the feeling of the energy inside of his body. Every last bit flowed throughout his body, cycling throughout like a connected set of rivers. This was what he was missing... focus. The Saiyan set himself up in the Galick Cannon position, opening his eyes again to face his Captain. "I... will try." he muttered, the fuchsia-colored aura replacing his ghostly-white aura from before as it wildly flashed around him. The build-up of energy inside of his body was going wild, as both Captain and Rookie had the energy building up inside of them. "Good! Now release it at me full-force! I won't be holding back on my own... so you better make sure to withstand it!" Tunnip roared as the energy in his body spiked.
This wasn't training... he wanted to clash! If Rutaba failed this time... then his Captain's beam would hit him full force. That's what he meant by using it never. Rutaba gritted his teeth sharply, this was his one shot.
"Galick....""Cannon!"
"FIRE!" Rutaba called out in a bestial roar, the fuchsia-colored beam blazing out of his body and climbing up towards the orbit of Planet Plant with nowhere to really go to possibly harm anybody. The energy fizzled slowly out, his ghostly white ki aura returning to replace the Galick Cannon's signature aura. "Looks like I've still got it." the Peacekeeper slowly wiped his brow as he'd pull out his scouter, realizing that he had spent a lot of time out here reteaching himself the basics that his Captain taught him so long ago. "Thank you Tunnip... I miss you..." Rutaba muttered under his breath as he stared into the stars that he had fired his Galick Cannon into. Some part of him wished that he'd see that same colored beam sent right back at him, but there was just darkness in those stars.
Rutaba held a solemn heart in remembrance of his squad. But he had more duties to attend to, and he had done a lot that day. "I guess I'll head back inside and get some rest. I'll need to review the rest at some other time..." the Saiyan sighed as he spoke to himself, scratching his head as he looked up into the sky one last time. He'd make his way straight towards his Mothership to walk its halls once more and finish out his day.
