(Heavy weights on!)
Jie Shan raised a hand and took aim at the target that had been set in-front of him. Through squinted eyes he gazed at it with an intense focus, like it was the only thing in the world. And to him, in this moment, it was. Nothing else existed. Not his weights, not the aching feeling in his ribs, and he was not under the watchful eye of a member of his father’s guard. No, his world only existed in the space between the target and him. The only sensation he felt was the gathering of ki in his hand, the burning of it in his palm, the unbridled power with which he wanted to fire it. His fingers twitched with anticipation. But Jie shan could not fire his attack, not yet. His Cloud Cannon needed some… fine-tuning. It was inefficiently put together, in lay-man’s terms. And Jie Shan expected nothing less. The technique had been a rather hastily put together creation on his part when he had first begun to use it. But now? He had no excuse to not refine it. Especially when he was supposed to be training. And this certainly fell under the umbrella of training.
The energy hummed in his hand, but it was still weak. He needed to put more power into it. Yes, he thought, more power. The ki flowed from the pit of his soul and up through his body, passing through his like his very own blood, following the river of his body to the focal point of his ki gathering. He could feel the energy in him sparking, though that just might be the Elemi blood in his veins acting up. And then he had it. the energy in him reached a zenith. With a final thrust of his spirit, he expelled the energy from the palm of his hand, a pale, grey burst of energy streaming from it and consuming the target. In a flash, the energy faded and Jie Shan was left standing there, panting, looking at the palm of his hand. Not bad, he thought, but he could push it even further. But that was for another day. He could do with a break for now.
The sound of clapping pierced his thoughts. With a turn of his head, he faced the source of it: his father’s guard, Beneria. She was clapping, a small expression of amusement on her face. She was an older Saiyan, Jie Shan would place her somewhere in her mid-thirties, and she looked ever the part of a veteran. Her hair fell to shoulder length, and a series of scars ran down her neck.
“Not bad, Jie Shan. You’ll have that perfected in no time,” she began, “But I’ve got a few pointers. First, watch your form. The way you hold yourself when you let that attack go is too sloppy. You need to adjust your stance a bit. Also, it looks like you’re really straining yourself. Don’t go all in until you know you can get everything out of it. Overextending yourself is a good way to get killed.”
Jie Shan sighed. He knew that. Most of it. But he was too tired to protest. “Thanks, Beneria. I appreciate it,” he said reluctantly instead.
“Not a problem, Jie Shan. Your father asked that I give you advice, so that’s what I’m doing. Besides, I’d hate for that pretty face of yours to get messed up because you do something stupid, kid,” she said with a smile.
“Uh, thanks,” he stammered, “Anyways, I think I’m done training for today. I guess I’ll, uh, see you later?”
“Hold on, just a second,” she said, raising her hand, “I want to talk to you.”
Jie Shan rolled his eyes. Why, he thought to himself, he had only ever met her a few times before. What could she possibly have to say to him? “Alright,” he said, “What about?”
“Well, I just wanted to talk to you about your father. How much do you know about him? His ambition?” She began.
Jie Shan shrugged. “Not much,” he admitted, “I know he’s all about his legacy or whatever. I’ve never really cared too much.”
“I see,” said Beneria quietly, closing her eyes, “So, I guess I need to fill you in. Maybe you know this, maybe you don’t, but I was in your father’s squad, years ago. So, believe me when I say that I know that man, and well. He’s always been ambitious. He’s always been scheming, planning, waiting for his chance to take the limelight and put himself on a pedestal.”
“So,” said Jie Shan, “He’s an asshole?”
Beneria laughed softly. “Yes,” she agreed, “He is. But that’s not the point. The point is, he could never quite get what he wanted. He was never strong enough. Whether it be talent, fate, or something else entirely, he was never much more than average. So, reluctantly, he satisfied himself with a desk job of middling important. It was all he could really hope for. Maybe if he were lucky, he could reach counselor status, but that was a far off dream. After all, his wife was gone with his child, running around off-world. Needless to say, he was a little broken.”
“Okay, but, what does this have to do with me?” Asked Jie Shan.
“Jie Shan, you’re his son. His legacy. And you’re strong, stronger than him. I’ve heard the way he talks about you in private. He thinks you’re the answer to all his wants, his chance to really rise above, to finally take what he wants. And I’m warning you. He’s gonna try and force you to risk your life all for his wants. I just thought you should know that it’s coming. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but your father is just waiting in the shadows, waiting for the time to spring into action. So, don’t be surprised when he finally asks you to do something crazy, like kill the council. Because trust me, he’s thinking it.”
Jie Shan swallowed hard. Damn, he thought, his father really was a selfish asshole. All along, he’d just been waiting for Jie Shan to get strong enough to advance his twisted plans. Jie Shan sighed in sadness. Why couldn’t things ever be simple?
“Beneria,” he said, “Thanks.”
She smiled and shook her head. “Don’t worry about it, Jie Shan. I’m just trying to keep an eye out for you. I know how he can be, so I figured I’d warn you.”
She stretched and yawned. Briefly, Jie Shan’s eyes brushed over her. So, he thought, she’d been in his father’s squad. And here he thought that his father only worked with monsters and assholes. Beneria didn’t seem to be either, at least on her surface.
“Anyways,” she said, “Good job today. Whenever you want to train again, gimme a call. I’ll be waiting.”
She gave him a thumbs up as she left the room, leaving Jie Shan by his lonesome. So, he thought, his father had plans for him. It was a shame that he was going to have to ruin them.
