What makes a good Warrior? Is it knowledge in martial arts? Is it the innate talent or raw power that one is born with? It is his nature or the long developed skill?
For some, especially the narrow minded ones, it is a single answer, however no warrior is complete if only one path is taken or if other aspects of war are lost along the journey. Few are the ones that realize this, these fortunate ones are faced with different challenges if they seek mastery over themselves, the first of all and the most important one, is the test of will.
It is not just about how strong you can become, how fast can you move or how devastating your attacks can be, it is your heart that needs to have the power to lift you up every time you fall. Being a warrior is realizing that you will be beat, you will fall, you will bleed and sweat and even cry in frustration. But what defines you as a worthy warrior it is not only being sure of how much you will have to endure, but getting back up again after all that. If you can be hit and you can fall, you can rise again.
Houri was about to learn just how important that lesson was.
Almost two weeks had passed since his life changing encounter with Vulpeca and Bataka, the Demon fox and the Saiyan Soldier, and with that, everything that he was used to had become different, better and more exciting than ever. Houri now had a completely different routine than he had in the past years. He had clean clothes every day, three meals a day with nutritious and well cooked food, and not just a room, Vulpeca saw to it that he now owned his own subterranean apartment. It was a simple one, however, compared to what the kid once knew as his home, if that name could be used, his place now was a mansion.
His apartment was located deep in the subterranean ruins of the Tuffle civilization, his house stayed a couple of minutes away from the main hideout connected by a series of tunnels in order to keep him safe from any eventual problem that might happen and for him not to end up getting in the way of Nakiya’s plans, something that Vulpeca did his best to avoid, after all, getting in the way of his master would end up putting Houri in a complicated spot, to say the least.
The place was well lit and had a decent size, a living room, kitchen, a bedroom, a bathroom and a basement to train, inside his basement, Vulpeca had installed a gravity machine to help increase the kid’s power and maximize his training, the basement had the same size of the apartment but was an empty room with no furniture besides some weights, drones and a few other devices to help him train, and Houri, since moving in, had been spending all his minutes inside of the basement, not just training, but adapting as well.
Since the day they went shopping in the capital, Houri had been wearing day in and day out his heavy weighted armor, and as Vulpeca had predicted, after almost a month since he had started wearing them, it felt like a second skin, to the point where Houri rarely changed back in his lighter armor. It was because of that and the fact that the main mission from Nakiya was approaching that the demon fox kicked up a notch on the kid’s training allowing him to use the Gravity machine.
It has been ten whole days since Houri had started to sleep in the basement with the gravity on, his mission was to first adapt with tree times the gravity from planet Vegeta to see how his body would react, after that he was supposed to train, move and even study with a gravity setting being increased by one each day until his tenth to finally start training his combat ability.
It was his big day, this whole process had been started due to Vulpeca wishing to harness Houri’s abilities to the max, and the whole plan included teaching the kid how to read, use mathematical processes, understanding a bit of martial arts concepts and even learning how to use machines and computers. That would be an easier task if Hour had not to always keep concentrating to keep his ki flowing in the past five days, for as the gravity intensified, the kid had more and more problems just by doing daily activities. The first challenges that were presented was the single act of getting out of bed, walking, even raising his hands to eat had become a tiring experience, however, Houri choose to endure and not to turn down the gravity, even imposing himself a personal challenge. Every time he failed a single and normal act he would do one hundred push-ups, squats, sit ups and run around his apartment until he reached ten kilometers. For the first four days using this regimen, he failed miserably. It was not that his body wasn’t adapting to the new and increasing gravity, it was, but Houri wanted more and by that he pushed his body to its wildest limits. Even when his muscles ached and trembled menacing to give in to his own limits, he would break them and force one more pushup, or one more sit up.
It had been a slow process, true in the begging his body collapsed from no more than thirty or forty reps, however as the days came by, his will got tempered like hot steel, his will turned into a sword able to cut thru his new challenges until he was able to stand firmly after a full set of exercises.
Now, facing the gravity machine at ten times the planet own gravity, Houri walked normally as if this was his normal gravity. He walked slowly, not out of tiredness or difficulty, but due to being in awe with himself. He looked at the mirror and for a second almost did not recognize himself. A month of study, exercise and nutritious meals had changed him from a skinny little kid to a young man with a finely build body.
His muscles were ripped and even his body mass had developed a little giving him a look of someone his own age, he had grown three inches too, now looking more of a proper warrior than someone living of scraps. For a second he took pride in his own looks and then tied his ponytail as he would begin his training.
Today he would seriously train using the machines prepared by Vulpeca, as he read slowly the training regimen, he programed all of the ten drones to float around him as the point of origin and to fire in irregular intervals and with irregular amounts of power a series of ki blasts for him to dodge.
As instructed, Houri programed the machines but added an extra factor, the machines would increase the speed of the program as time went by so he would be more challenged as he progressed or got tired.
Houri was ready, or so he thought he was, as he stood there with his full heavy weighted armor on and with the gravity setting at ten times the base value, he activated the drones that quickly flew up and slowly drifted along the air. The silence, was agonizing, he did not know when or how the attack would come, but he knew it was about to, he was nervous, anxious. It was when he got hit, right in the back.
Was he not concentrated? How did he not anticipated it?
No time to dwell on that, as he felt the sharp pain on his back another ki blast was fired in his direction from his right side. This time however he had time to see the drone and using the impulse from the first blast Houri let his body lean forward quick enough for him to put his hands on the ground avoiding the second blast by hitting the ground and pushing himself back up. The maneuver had let him avoid the second shot, but he did not imagined that the third one was so close, as he stood up the third one grazed his shoulder making him turn around while moving his head to the side as the fourth one almost hit his eye.
Were things getting out of hand? Or he wasn’t prepared?
Houri did not cared, he grinned, as all this felt as if was nothing, he had survived beasts more vicious than a ki blast. He had faced creatures with pure killing intent, beasts that had the sole purpose of devouring him to sate the hunger from the wastelands.
So being hit a few times was nothing, he wanted to hone his skills to the best he could, and with every hit he took and after almost an hour of intense training, a light of understanding came to his mind. His moves were a bit more sluggish due to the gravity and the weight of his armor, so it was not that his moves were ineffective, it was his reaction time, he was waiting too much to dodge the blasts he was trying to dodge them after they were shot.
With a laugh of realization, Houri understood what he should change, now, closing his eyes and focusing on the sound and the vibration the air produced right before a ki blast was shot he used his inner instinct to anticipate the shot and move out of its line of fire.
But it wasn’t just that, Houri for almost thirty minutes used his senses to the max doing it with almost no effort now, predicting where the energy shot would be directed at and the amount of energy being put into it. He did not realized this yet, but his talent allowed him to start ki sensing without anyone telling him how to do it. If Vulpeca could see him now, the demon would be surprised.
Still, there was room to improve, Houri, feeling the tiredness of his training started to feel the weight of his body and to suffer for it due to his own programing, as he got slower the blasts increased their speed in a way that every time he was able to dodge one, tree others would hit him. For a couple of minutes even when he could predict the trajectory he would get hit, with that, two options formed in his mind. The first, he acted upon instinct, for every hit he was about to receive, Houri burned his own ki in a single spot of his own body and tried to deflect the blast. At first a few were blown in his face, but while honing the amount of ki concentrated, the kid started to send away the blasts while the second option took place from his mind into a more solid plan of action.
Houri knew when the blast was about to be shot but every movement was costly, so with that in mind he only moved his body enough to dodge by centimeters from the blast and only in the last possible second, so, this way he could make sure to know where and how the following attacks would come from and dodge or deflect them as he would need.
However, not everything went as he planned or expected, his body was getting increasingly weak from all the effort, almost four hours of training nonstop could take a toll on anyone, and although Hour was now even more excited than before, his body started to sustain damage after every blast, he had to end it quick, but how? He did not have enough energy to simply shut a drone at a time, he would be over powered if he did, and hurt in the process probably, so with that in mind, Houri with a single idea started to build up his ki, not as much as he had when he meet Vulpeca and Bataka, but a fair amount, he did not wished to blow up his home, so restraint was in order, however he was not planning to wait or to be turned into a corpse by the drones, and after dodging a couple more of blasts, he jumped in the air making his foes follow him shooting as he gained height. His plan had worked, the blasts came from all the sides and he only needed this momentum. With a swift release of his own Ki covering his whole body, Houri blew up the ki orbs before they could reach his body and with the small interval shot a straight line of ki while turning his body into a 360 degree hitting every orb at almost the same time.
Had it worked? Yes, the drones were deactivated by the sheer force of the blast and all laid in the ground scattered and a bit battered by the training, however, they were off and Houri was proud. Not only he had outdone himself, but now he could say with pride that he had trained to his limit in that gravity and even reinvented himself on how to move more effectively.
However, a price now must be paid, his body refused to move and as he got down to the floor and knelt, he hardly could move. He could not accept that, the Saiyan in him would not fall for it, drones and tiredness? Never. With his last remaining will, Houri stood up as if trying to lift the world off his shoulders, using all of his strength, he took step after step, and at least got out of his basement up to the living area of his home. There, with the gravity off, he could at least breath and move with surprisingly ease. It has been ten days that he had been shut out in the basement living in a way higher gravity, and with that, he now with the little strength he had left, walked around his home feeling as if he could move much faster than just a regular walk, that prompted him to sit down on his couch and to rest a bit, just a bit he thought. Little did he knew that he would sleep for almost eight hours
That was his first day of training, what an amazing day, what a training day! The first of many, and the beginning of a journey to something far greater than he could imagine, the path of a master, the path of a warrior.
