Baalbatos sighed as he stood in the checkout line of the grocery store, flanked on either side by people. He felt the eyes on him, but he was ignoring their gaze. Let them stare, he thought, it made no difference to him. And besides, he could scarcely blame them: he knew that his people were relatively uncommon here on the planet Earth.
Finally, it was his turn in line. He set his food in front of the cashier: rices and breads, some green vegetables. The basics, really. He did not want to spend the money on luxuries, or eat lavishly. The basics would do quite nicely. It was all they needed to survive here on Earth.
"Hi," said the cashier, "That all for you?"
Baalbatos nodded, and reached for his wallet. "Yes, miss," said Baalbatos.
"Alright, your total will be..."
Baalbatos walked down the streets, brown paper bags in hands. Boring stuff, he though, but somebody needed to do it. Lord Qrowen certainly wouldn't. But they still needed to eat. Baalbatos certainly hoped that his shopping trip might become more interesting. Earth was full of interesting folks, and he was certain that he could find someone to entertain him during his errands.
A red headed man wearing basic human looking clothes ( a white t shirt covered by a black, fur lined leather jacket) was leaning against one of the local coffee shops, cigarette in hand. As he brought the stick to his mouth, his eyes would dart sideways when a dark aura could be sensed approaching. It wasn't something he often felt here on Earth, for all it's half breeds... no, this was as familiar to him as his masters own aura. There was a full blooded demon nearby.
"I wasn't aware there were any here" He would say lowly as he tossed the cigarette onto the ground, crushing it with his foot and pushing himself off of the wall, all while exhaling the smoke through his mouth. He would look around him, eyes darting this way and that until he would finally spot the source of the energy he was feeling. There was definitely no mistaking him. Technically, he could pass off as an alien, but being a demon himself, he knew exactly what this man was as he approached. He wondered just what his master would have him do in this situation... how this could at all benefit her? Well, a demonic presence on Earth could further her plans once the Kami returned... And so with that thought in mind, Vulpeca would head on over to the demon carrying groceries.
"Need a hand with those bud?" He would ask casually, making no attempts to hide his own demonic aura, or the fire that could easily be seen in the Fox Demon's eyes. He wanted this one to know what he was, it was always more comforting to know you weren't alone, right?
Baalbatos's eyes narrowed. He felt something, a presence. It felt like home, like the miasma of the Demon Realm. There was a demon nearby. And a relatively strong one. And one that seemed to be headed right for him. Well, he thought, this was not what he had expected to encounter during his grocery shopping. And he was unsure whether or not this was a good thing. He yearned to make contact with the Demon Realm once again, but he knew enough about his own kind that it might not be the friendliest of encounters. Though, he'd not have to wait long to find out.
It seemed he worried for nothing. The redheaded demon man offered to help him with his groceries. Baalbatos's gaze slid sideways, appraising the man, looking him up and down for signs of violence. He found none for now. Well, he thought, Earth was indeed full of surprises. "Well, if you're offering..." said Baalbatos, holding out one of the bags to the man.
He'd be glad for the help. Even gladder to meet one of his own kind again. It had been far too long. "I appreciate it, friend. I did not expect to meet someone such as yourself here on Earth," said Baalbatos.
Vulpeca casually took the bag whenever the demon accepted his offer for help. He couldn't help but find the situation they were in humerus... A demon, running errands and buying groceries. It was something the fox demon never even considered before as the base was self sufficient in producing food, and the palace had it's servants to take care of such things. This led him to believe the demon he was helping must he of a lower caste, though not the lowest judging by his appearance and the way he spoke. Although, it was safe to say he definitely wasn't a noble.
"Nor did I, I've heard of human's using ancient rituals to summon one of us from our realm before, yet still I did not think to encounter one here on Earth. Is that how you came here? Or by some other means?" Vulpeca asked rather bluntly to the demon next to him. He caught himself however before he started being too rude with the man, and was quick to correct his behavior.
"Forgive me that was rude, I am simply curious as to how you came here? It isn't often one of our own chooses to leave leave willingly so it's a bit of a curiosity to me. Ah, i'm being rude again aren't I? My name is Vulpeca of house Devla, it's a pleasure to meet you." He would say with a light bow of his head, though the smirk that played on his lips indicated just how much he disliked playing this proper song and dance.
Baalbatos nodded his gratitude as the demon accepted one of his bags. Good, he thought, less for him to manage. It was about time that someone helped him out with something. Lord Qrowen needed to invest in servants, else Baalbatos would be working well beyond his stature. It was not fitting for the second in command to run errands like this, though he supposed if he wanted something done right, the lilac skinned demon should do it for himself.
The demon spoke of rituals and how Baalbatos came to be in this world. A reasonable question, he thought, and one that he could answer, at least in part. Baalbatos began to open his mouth to speak, but suddenly the demon continued on. He introduced himself as Vulpeca of House Devla. Ah, thought Baalbatos, a noble. Very interesting indeed to meet someone of his blood outside of the demon realm. To his knowledge, they mostly kept to their own little spheres of influence in the demonic world that they called home.
"No, Vulpeca, I assure you it is quite alright," reassured Baalbatos, not thinking it overly rude, "I understand. It's natural to be curios, of course. I certainly am as well."
Baalbatos nodded to himself. Very curios indeed. He'd have to have to ask the man his own questions soon enough. But first, answer the ones posed to him. "I am Baalbatos," continued the demon, "No house. I'm the first of my blood, spawned by the dark energies of our realm. Though that doesn't mean I act like a common brute. I certainly appreciate the finer things in life."
Baalbatos smirked. No, he was not noble. But he aimed to fix that. If Lord Qrowen and himself played their cards just right, perhaps he might earn the right to call himself a lord someday. And then he could get people to carry his groceries for him.
"But to answer your question," said Baalbatos, "I am not entirely sure how I came to be in this world. Well, I suppose I do, but I do not understand why. You see, I was carried to this world by a rift between worlds. How that rift came to be, I am not sure. I have a few theories, yes, based on my understand of magicks. I know enough to know that the veil between worlds is often times thin enough for people to slip on through. And I know that it is possible for those of our blood to tear open the curtain betweens worlds, so I suppose it could be an enemy of mine attempting to displace me. Or even yet, it could be as you say and I was summoned by someone of this world. Though, when I arrived, no one attempted to bind me, and I was alone."
Baalbatos laughed. "Perhaps it was fate," he chuckled.
So his name was Baalbatos, and he was the first of his line? It was rare now a days to find a demon like that... of course they were still considered low class by default, but he could see this demon easily climb to mid class at least. He certainly held himself well enough, and didn't act like the monstrous brutes of the lower castes. He was a curiosity indeed, though one that the fox demon didn't really care for. This was more his masters line of interest, not his own.
Whenever Baalbatos explained how he came to Earth, Vulpeca couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. Normally it was fairly obvious when the veil between worlds grew too thin, he must have really been caught off guard to not notice himself pass through it... he must also not know how to use his own portals if he didn't just go home... unless he found something here that interested him?
"If you were summoned then you definitely wouldn't have woken up alone. These humans are quite bothersome that way. Although I'm not too sure how much worth I put in fate." He would say simply with a shrug of his shoulders. Either Baalbatos was playing coy with him, or he really didn't know more that what he was telling him. It was still such a bother though... his master would no doubt be interested in learning more of his origin, she'd probably want to study him in length too, though Vulpeca had no desire to bring him back to the demon world. At least not yet.
"You hold yourself well though, for a demon with no caste and no house. I'm sure if you ever made your way back to the demon realm, you'd find yourself in a higher position in no time. But I digress, what keeps you here on Earth? Surely the human's aren't all that interesting to be around? Doing the groceries seems like such a menial task~" He would say with a light smirk crossing his features.
Vulpeca was likely right. If indeed a human had summoned him, he'd not have come to consciousness alone. Oh well, thought Baalbatos, he had not been banking on that theory being true. It would have been almost embarrassing if it was. Summoned by a human... He'd have never been allowed to live it down.
Vulpeca continued on, paying him compliments. He'd rise in rank in no time? While Baalbatos thought it true, he found it amusing that someone he had just met was already paying him lip service. Of course, it was likely niceties. But he enjoyed them nonetheless. First the cat man, Weiser, and now this demonic Vulpeca. It seemed that Earth housed plenty of pleasant folks after all.
But he did make comment on the menial tasks that he was doing. Carrying groceries was beneath him, yes, but somebody had to do it. Baalbatos smirked back. "Well now, a demon has to eat as well. If I don't get the groceries, no one else will," he explained, "I suppose I could employ someone, yes, though I've always believed that if you want something done right, you should do it yourself."
Baalbatos chuckled. As if someone could screw up shopping for rice and bread. Though, he supposed, he might be surprised by the incompetency of some people. Why, back in the Demon Realm he had known a few demons, lesser demons than himself, who were dumber than rocks. He'd not have trusted them with grocery shopping, no sir.
But why did he remain in the world of humans? A good question, and it deserved an answer. Baalbatos pondered a moment, trying to find the best way to answer. He pursed his lips as he thought, and then he had it. "Well, Vulpeca of Devla, I suppose to answer that question, I should tell you a bit more about myself," he said "You see, in the demon realm, I led a small band of demons. Casteless, low class, brutish folk. Not like you. Not the most refined band, but they had their uses."
He walked for a moment, letting his words be process. "You see," he continued, "I am ambitious. Should I have never left the Demon Realm, I suspect that I'd have eventually grown larger, but it was not long before I was brought into this world. I was left stranded here on Earth at first, friendless, powerless, lost. Though I still had my dignity. And my ambition. I'll not bore you with the details, but eventually I made contact with a displaced Kold Demon lord. You see, he wanted to forge a new empire, restore himself to glory. And, I being the man that I am, saw this as an opportunity. An opportunity to cut myself at a slice of power, to rise high."
He turned his head ever so slightly towards the demon. "And that is why I remain. The chance to grow my influence in this world, make a life worth living, a life I deserve," he said proudly. He grinned. "And of course," he added, "Earth is a great more deal pleasant than the Demon Realm."
Whenever Baalbatos began to speak of his groceries, and how if he wanted them done right he would do it himself, Vulpeca gave a shrug at that. Honestly, he himself had never done groceries. Even after being left alone on Earth, he had simply hunted his meals instead of gone about it the earthling way. Back home, they had plenty of servants to do these things for them.
"Honestly for a task such as this, it's difficult even for the servants to get wrong." He would say with a dismissive wave of his free hand. Though as he looked to the bag of groceries he was holding, he was only now noticing just how hungry he was actually getting. Too bad he didn't have any Earthling money at his disposal, it might have been the first time he purchased any sort of human food. He doubted it would taste very good though, they seemed to have rather low standards when it came to their food.
Vulpeca would then fall silent as he glanced back to Baalbatos, listening to him speak of his time back in the demon realm, and of what it was he was doing here on Earth, and it caused Vulpeca to truly think on his next words. He was presented with an amazing opportunity for his master... something that could help along the plan she had yet to enact. The Kold Empire was one she had not touched since their visit with prince Lucifer almost a year ago... perhaps this... Kold Lord Baalbatos was speaking of could be of use to them.
"For starters, please just call me Vulpeca. I might belong to a house but my noble status is... hmm how to explain that... on condition of service? As for the state of the Demon Realm, I think you'll find it much more pleasant now that there is actually a Queen. I wouldn't call her a kind ruler, but she is... fair. The demon realm is much less chaotic under her rule." He would state with a smirk playing his lips. His already fiery eyes seemed to burn brighter as he would then begin to speak of the topic he was now most interested in.
"This Kold Lord of yours. Now I must admit this interests me greatly... He wishes to forge a new Empire, and I think my master would be very much interested in meeting him. Of course, if he proves to be someone she finds interesting, that meeting could be very much mutually beneficial. Of course, being his ally, this could be a great opportunity for you as well, if you will both meet with her." vulpeca would say with a sly tone, not yet making the correlation that the house of Devla, was actually the house of the Demon Queen herself.
Baalbatos gave the man a small smile. "Then you've never met some of the servants I have. They'd lose their own heads if they weren't attached... Though I suppose they'll lose their heads anyway," he said with the faintest hint of laughter pervading his voice. He'd seen plenty of people lose their heads over smaller things than screwing up somebody's groceries. There were plenty of petty people out there in this world and the others, so it should come as no surprised. And Baalbatos did not blame those people at all: incompetence was not something that should be tolerated. Failure, perhaps, but never incompetence.
The demon stared at Baalbatos in silence for a few moments. Good, he thought, let him stare. The lilac skinned demon was half tempted to say something, make some sarcastic comment, but he thought better of it. No, best he just let the man think. Why bite the hand that feeds? Or at least the hand that carried his feed? Baalbatos was still very much aware that the man had a grip on his groceries, and he'd be loathe to loose those.
The man explained that he'd rather just go by his given name, and how his membership of the House Devla was conditional. Ah, he thought, a servant. Perhaps a guardian of some sort, or an advisor. Before long, he explained that the Demon Realm had a new ruler, a Queen. Baalbatos raised an eyebrow in interest. Well, he thought, it seemed that things did change, even in the primordial chaos that was the Demon Realm. And probably for the better. If she was as fair as the demon suggested, she could likely do the demon realm some good. That was, of course, assuming she could hold it. Baalbatos knew his history. Give it a few centuries and the realm might just be back where it started. The Demon Realm and their kind had a certain quality of... entropy about them. Baalbatos knew their blood. But, he supposed, any order was good for a time.
Vulpeca spoke of them meeting this new demon Queen. And Baalbatos had to admit that the prospect was certainly an appealing one. He was very much interested in anyone who could bring order to the Demon Realm, even for a time. The hard part, he thought, would be convincing Lord Qrowen to go along with it. Sometimes, he remembered, the Kold Demon Lord could be more than a little hard to get a along with. But, Baalbatos thought, he could probably manage it. The lilac-skinned demon was certainly persuasive at times, and the promise of a powerful ally was sure to be appealing to Lord Qrowen.
"Well, Vulpeca, if you could arrange a meeting with this Queen, I'd be glad to take you up on that. I'm sure I can even convince my Kold Demon associate to come along," he said, "I'm sure he'll go along with it if I tell him what a great opportunity it is. He's never opposed my plans before."
"Hmph. Thankfully, the palace servants need to be competent to get there in the first place." He would say passively with another wave of his free hand. He couldn't imagine a low class demon working in the castle... hell they'd stick out like a sore thumb and get themselves killed within the first day. His master was very particular about who served her... in fact, most of those with any rank were created by her, and those lower then that were either failed experiments that were put to use, or those of middle class and higher.
He noted Baalbatos demeanor as he mentioned his noble status being conditional. He would raise an eyebrow at the man, suddenly feeling the need to defend himself, as if Baalbatos had just belittled him for that statement.
"And please don't mistake me for a servant or anything of the sort. While my noble status is conditional, I am still the General of the Demon Queen's army." He would state rather proudly, eyeing the man for a reaction.
Regardless, he was interested to hear what this demon had to say. It would truly be a great feat for him if this Lord Qrowen proved to be useful to his master at all. As for Baalbatos' use... well, he was the first of his line, so that was something he supposed. Perhaps the more he found out about him, the more use he could see, but right now he couldn't picture him as anything more than a pawn in her ultimate plans.
" Very well, I'll see what I can do. However, I wonder if I wouldn't be able to meet this Kold Demon of yours? It wouldn't do for me to arrange such a thing without meeting both of you. I do hope he agrees to this meeting, he'd be pretty foolish not too..." Vulpeca would say simply as he continued to follow Baalbatos. What was he supposed to do, dump the groceries back onto the Demon and leave? Now if anything he did had been rude, that would of taken the cake! No, he fully intended to see this through, perhaps the two could get to know each other better if the trip was long enough.
"I would hope so," said Baalbatos in reference to the palace servants. Perhaps one day he would have the luxury of his own compotent servants and his own palace. But for now, the demon lived humbly. Though, if he were lucky, his fortunes might change before long. Provided that the Kold Demon lord proved to be agreeable of course. He'd damn well better, thought Baalbatos, or else the demon would... Well, the demon would do something. It was not as if he could oppose his employer, though he was growing in strength by the day. He just could not hope to match the might of a Kold Demon in his current state.
And it seemed everyone around him was of great stature: Vulpeca revealed himself as the general of the Demon Queen's armies. Baalbatos raised another eyebrow in surprise. He almost wanted to say 'And yet you're still carrying my groceries', but he thought better of it. Best if he not upset a potential ally.
"Ah, I see," said Baalbatos, "My apologies, General. I did not know I was conversing with someone of your rank." But he continued on, carrying his groceries and listening to the demon. Yes, he thought, the Kold Demon would be a damn idiot not to agree to such a meeting. "Yes, I do hope he agrees as well," he said, "So, I'll tell you what. Give me my groceries back and I'll see what I can do. Do you have a way for me to get into contact with you? Because I'm sure I can sort this out within a day or two."
"Don't worry about it" Vulpeca would state simply as Baalbatos apologized. It wasn't as if he had done anything wrong, Vulpeca just had a natural loathing for people... a loathing he was doing quite well in controlling thanks to Houri. It did make him feel slightly better however, to actually let this demon know what rank he hell, and what respect it demanded.
Baalbatos wasn't a stupid man, he spoke properly, carefully and cunningly. He had only seen so much from his master before... he wondered just how a conversation between the two would go. It would definitely be interesting to listen in on that conversation.
Finally, Baalbatos asked for his groceries back, asking for a way to contact Vulpeca in a few days once he was able to convince the Kold Demon to meet with them. The fox demon would comply, handing the bag over to the demon once more before speaking.
"I don't have any normal means of communication, no. But simply call for me with your mind, and I'll hear you. I am uncertain if my master will be able to come to Earth to meet with you and the Kold, however I will get informed during the time you need. Do you know how to create a portal to the Demon Realm? If it comes to it, you may need to meet her at the palace itself." Vulpeca would ask of him curiously. The obvious answer to his question would be no... else Baalbatos would have returned to the Demon Realm by now, wouldn't he? Regardless if he could or couldn't, at least Vulpeca could teach him that much before he left.
Did Baalbatos know how to create a portal to the Demon Realm? No, he thought, that secret eluded him. If he did, he would be long gone by now, already making for the Demon Realm. But Baalbatos was not an idiot. He could figure it out with enough time. In fact, already he was starting to piece together the magicks in his mind, theorizing the best way to do it. With enough thought, perhaps he could even make it so that the Kold Demon lord could come with him. He turned his gaze back on Vulpeca.
"No," he began, "But I am certain I can figure it out. I like to think that I'm quite capable of anything, given the proper time to think about it." He smirked, meaning it full well.
"Now," he continued, "I think it might be best if I go on my way, Vulpeca. I've plenty of work to do to prepare for this meeting. I hope that I can meet with you and your Queen soon."
And with that, Baalbatos pressed his groceries tightly against him. "I'll see you again," he said. And slowly, he took off into the air and flew away from the demon, heading straight back towards their ship.
(Thread exit! Good thread, Nakiya! I'd like PL with heavy weights and LMB, please! Thank you!)
"Just focus on your own demonic energy, it's pretty easy for those who've already seem the dimension they are trying to travel to." Vulpeca would say shortly, though he would nod as Baalbatos would seem to immediately excuse himself, saying that there would need to be preparations for the meeting with Nakiya. Well, he wasn't sure what he needed to prepare, other than collect his own thoughts... He would need to be cautious, as he still knew next to nothing about those he had arranged a meeting with.
"Very well, i'm looking forward to it. Till next we meet." He said as he would watch him take to the sky with his groceries. He didn't linger however, he had spent far too much time on Earth, and it was about time he got back. There was nothing else for him to do here now that the prince was in Makai. A dark, fiery portal would appear behind Vulpeca, and as soon as he turned around, he would disappear into it, returning to Makai.
