Baalbatos sat in front of his ship, the store front unfolded and open for business. It was a slow day thus far, but it was not as if Baalbatos minded all that much. In truth, it was a bit of relief. This would be the first free time that the demon had had in days. It seemed that everywhere he went these days, there was either some encounter, some fighting, some business to attend too. But for now, he was simply sitting out in the sunlight of Earth, waiting for someone to come by and take a look at his wares. Today, he was selling the furs that he'd acquired a few days back. He was unsure what animal they came from, probably some strange Earth beast, but he was reasonably sure he could fast talk somebody into buying them, if only they would stop and take a look at them.
Suddenly, a familiar energy came to his mind. Ah, thought the demon, it seemed as if Xun Sun was approaching. The human was probably coming to see him on business, as was typical of the man. It seemed that all the two ever discussed was business. And Baalbatos took no issue with that. In fact, he appreciated it. Professionals like Xun Sun were a rare breed, a dying breed. A shame, thought Baalbatos, the world could use more people like him. He certainly got things done, and he often times got favorable results. Fast and talented, thought Baalbatos, two qualities he would always appreciate in a person.
Suddenly, an idea struck him. Perhaps he could have some fun with the man. Just mess with him a little bit, have something to entertain himself with on a boring little day like today. It would be new to him, but he was certain he could do it. He'd known people before who could use the strength of minds to communicate. And for someone as smart as him, it would be a small matter of figuring it out.
And he thought that he already had it. He cast his mind out around him like a net. The magicks reached around him like so many arms, twirling about like so many tendrils with which he sought the minds of others. They moved over the region, feeling it up and down, looking for Xun Sun’s energy. He’d already mastered the art of searching for energy on its most basic level. This would not be a challenge for the demon.
His mind finally found the Earthling. There, he thought, now to give him a bit of a shock. In his mind, Baalbatos began to spin the words like yarn, and he whisked them away, sending them across the land towards Xun Sun. He forced the words in, like water down a funnel, spinning them down into the recesses of the man’s mind.
‘Hello,’ thought the demon, ‘Coming to see me?’ The man’s approach slowed and a slow grin peered over Baalbatos’s face. A chuckle floated from his lips. Had he surprised the man? ‘What’s the matter?’ Thought the demon, ‘Stop sign? Bump in the road? Or did I give you a scare?’
In a hurry, the energy sped up, hurtling towards the demon. Baalbatos ‘s grin grew even wider. By his estimations, the man would arrive in a few minutes. And all the while, the demon would taunt him with his mind. This was fun, recounted the demon. He should do this more often.
…
The car came screeching to a halt in front of the store. And all the while, Baalbatos’s grin had swollen to massive proportions. He could scarcely contain his mirth. Xun Sun rose from his car and slammed the door shut before stomping over to Baalbatos, a sour grin on his face. Black hair flew behind the man as he sped towards Baalbatos. “Do you think you’re funny, demon?” Shouted the human man, “Because you’re not!”
“Ah, Xun Sun,” exclaimed the lilac, grinning demon, “I wasn’t expecting you! Please, come on over!”
“Don’t give me that, Baalbatos! You know full well what I’m talking about!” Yelled Xun Sun, getting visibly red in the face.
“Oh?” Asked the demon, feigning innocence, “Whatever do you mean? I’ve been here all day, trying to sell these furs. A shame, but they haven’t sold. I don’t suppose you’d care for one, would you?”
“No! I don’t want your damned furs!” Exclaimed the man, “What I want is to know why you’ve taken to invading my mind!”
“Oh, come now,” sighed the demon, “Invade? That’s a little harsh. All I did was send you a few messages is all.”
“I have a phone, you know,” roared the human, “Why not contact me with that?! Or do you not have an answer for that, you purple skinned devil?!”
“Phones?” Scoffed Baalbatos, “Oh, please. Those are so inconvenient, especially when one can take these opportunities to communicate with one’s mind. Much better to use gray matter for that.”
“Some of us prefer not to have our minds touched all over like some kind of toy, Baalbatos,” yelled the human, still raging.
“Oh, trust me Xun Sun, you’ll get used to it,” said the demon.
“No, Baalbatos, I won’t,” groaned the human, “So, please. Stop it. Or at least don’t do it unless it’s really important. No more taunting me.”
The demon sighed. This was not worth arguing over. “Fine,” relented Baalbatos, “You’ve my word. No more taunting.”
“Good,” huffed Xun Sun, “Now, I could use your help with something.”
Baalbatos’s ears perked up. The human needed his help. Now this was interesting, he thought. “Oh really?” Asked Baalbatos, “What with?”
Xun Sun jerked a thumb back towards the car. “Get in and I’ll explain as we go along,” said the man.
Baalbatos shrugged and made for the car, pressing the buttons on his remote to fold up the shop as he went. “Well,” said Baalbatos, “When you put it that way, I can hardly resist.” The demon climbed into the car and a moment later they were off.
