Winter was proving to be a interesting time for Piyano as he spent more and more time upon the Earth. Having never experienced the powerful season before on his home planet the tall Namekian had fallen in love with the snow and chill ever since his earliest days on this new blue planet. No matter how much Piyano was fascinated by the interesting season however Piyano could not deny that winter came with several heavy drawbacks. Cold seemed to barely effect Namekian's, at least when compared to how badly it affected humans with its bitter bite. Yet even with Piyano's natural resistance to the frost the green alien still found nights in the north where even his thick skin could not stand the immensely frigid temperatures. Last night had been one such night, after several hours of huddling around a fire hoping to brave the elements Piyano had been forced to admit defeat and find shelter for the night.
Having lived almost entirely in the North since his arrival to Earth Piyano had made friends with several people of the Cold North, the people Piyano had come to consider his closest friends however was the cheerful families of Jingle Village. Ever since a massive snow storm had covered the tiny rural village in feet of white powder over night, trapping the citizens in a frosty exile from other nearby towns. Piyano had been the first to respond to help dig the villagers free. The Namekian's great strength mixed with a lot of teamwork from the villagers had resulted in the small community being freed from winters grip by the next morning. Jingle Village was happy to let Piyano come and visit whenever he wished since that fateful storm. Several times had Piyano returned to the village, most often simply to spend time with the people of the family based community. If any humans on Earth behaved in a manner that reminded Piyano of his home world it was Jingle Village.
So Piyano had spent the night in the hut of the village leader, a gruff mechanic named Karen, along with her husband and daughter. Piyano had been forced to spend his nights in Jingle Village no less than four times beforehand, so the green alien knew exactly what he would be awaking up to the next morning. The Namekian could only shrug and smile as he bunked down for the night, tomorrow was going to be too active a day for the man to stay up long into the late hours of twilight. Sleeping restfully throughout the night upon Karen's couch, Piyano was awakened early the next morning by the sounds of five voices screaming into his ears. "WAKE UP!!!!!!!!" came the chorus of young children that had all gathered around the green man and screamed as one, much like they did every time Piyano spent the night in the village. Snapping to attention on the couch Piyano swung himself forward at a extreme speed, as if he went from laying one moment to simply standing on the plush piece of furniture the next. "AH! I'M AWAKE!" Piyano shouted unintentionally as he sprang out of sleep, only to be greeted to the five young faces of Karen's daughter and her friends.
"Phew... Katie, Jerry. You know guys know it spooks me when you all do that." Piyano said addressing the two eldest of the group. Piyano wasn't the best person at determining human ages, but he knew each child to be somewhere between eight years and eleven. "Why it can't be time to play already?" Piyano asked after, noticing each child already wore their snowsuits. "Come on Mister Piyano! We know you only like to stay for about a day so we need to wake you real early to play before you leave." Katie said tugging on the Namekian's elbow to unsuccessfully try and drag the man out the front door. Piyano looked down and frowned at the young girl, but his face could not hold before bursting forth a wide smile. "Okay children, go prepare your forts and I'll be outside shortly." the Namekian said trying to suppress a chuckle. Katie lead the other children out the front, they needed to make ready for battle after all!
Releasing a tired sigh as the kids ran outside Piyano stretched his muscles and walked into the kitchen, delighted to see Karen and her husband Tony sitting at a small table enjoying a cup of liquid Piyano had learned was named coffee. "They just love it when you visit Piyano, I don't think I have ever seen their forts look as large as they do this time." Tony said cheerfully to his friend when Piyano entered the room. Taking a seat beside his human companions Piyano enjoyed a fresh glass of water and conversed with the married couple for several minutes, the trio relying tales of their lives since Piyano's last visit weeks earlier. Maybe ten minutes passed before a wet ball of snow slammed into the window beside their table, the signal that the children had waited long enough for Piyano to come outside and face the day. "Ha, good luck Piyano. Katie built a special surprise for you this time." Tony warned as Piyano stood up to face his challengers. Tony's words left dread in Piyano's thoughts, Katie had inherited her mothers gifts with machines and anything the girl made was likely to be scarier than Piyano had been anticipating.
Stepping out the front door into the beautifully sunny day Piyano breathed in a deep breath of clean outside air before throwing himself hard to the right. The Namekian rolled as he hit fresh powder and scrambled along the snowy ground until he reached Karen's truck, using the large vehicle as cover. Even as the Namekian's seemingly random actions where taking place a miniature hailstorm of snowballs flooded the lawn before Karen's home, children from all over the village had surrounded the small house with snow forts of various sizes. Each fort containing at least two children was raining their snowy arsenal Piyano's direction, hoping to pelt the alien with balls of the fluffy white substance.
In a village as small as Jingle snowball fights were the favorite past time of the local children, and every time Piyano came to visit he had discovered that the new name of the game was young versus green. Crouched behind the truck as Piyano surveyed his surroundings the man could only grin as he observed the towns children's defenses. Tactically the little terrors had improved. Having long ago determined there was no way out of playing the game Piyano had come to learn to make training out of the little game, do everything in his power to not get hit while he tagged the children out with snowballs of his own. This time however Piyano was wearing weighted training clothes, something the green alien had not thought to remove the night before. Knowing the mistake had been his own Piyano could only shrug and accept that today's game/training was going to be a lot harder than normal.
Having finished his scan of the snowbanks Piyano saw no less than ten forts he would have to conquer. With two children in each fort Piyano realized that Katie had actually wrapped every child in the village into the game today. Deciding to star from left to right Piyano crouched low and crawled around to the left side of Karen's truck. Pings and heavy thunks struck the vehicle as the children's barrage kept coming, they had no intention of allowing Piyano any easy movements. Measuring the time between each impact Piyano found what he believed to be his best moment and leaped out from behind his cover, literally jumping over Karen's large truck in a single bound. Thick balls of snow crashed down to the earth all around him as Piyano landed on the other side and dashed forward with all his speed. Balls pasted within inches of the Namekian's face as he charged the first fort, dodging left to right Piyano managed to avoid being hit as he dived feet first into a skid around the forts eastern face.
The two young children shrieked and started to turn tall and flee when they realized Piyano had slipped past their front wall, but calmly scooping snow from the ground into his palms the Namekian flicked a white wave at the youngsters. They both tripped into the bank covered in fine powder. Knowing he needed to get back behind cover Piyano quickly scrambled into the conquered fort, and it proved to be a good thing he had as another rain of snowballs fell from the skies on his previous position. Leaning against the forts front wall Piyano found the slab of snow to be quite solid. Mostly hand packed overnight the wall was a frozen block three feet wide and two feet high. A idea invaded the Namekian's mind than and with a simply knifing chop to the walls base Piyano was now holding the frozen block before him.
Taking up the makeshift shield Piyano ran right through the next wave of snowballs, feeling the impact upon his icy protection Piyano managed to charge through two more forts before the mobile wall broke under the impact of thrown balls. Crouched once more in a sturdy box like fort Piyano thought to try his tactic again, but this time the walls proved to loose for such attempts. Peeking over the wall Piyano's next target was a pair of forts built within several feet of each other. The design was strong offensively as it doubled the amount of fire Piyano would have to rush through, defensibly however... If Piyano could crest their walls he could remove four players all at once. Rolling out from cover the Namekian charged, Piyano almost made it to the forts before the trap was sprung.
Running at full speed Piyano could not avoid the clever pitfall the children had dug into the snow. After a quick ten foot tumble Piyano found himself inside a hole, a blanket covered in snow had been used to disguise the human children's trick. Frozen dirt and snow was all Piyano could see surrounding him inside the pit and knowing he had very little time to react Piyano clawed at the earthen wall with all his might, burrowing himself under the ground. Digging through frozen earth was a challenging and painful experience, Piyano felt as if he would break his claws off in the hard dirt as he clawed and climbed and pushed his way to freedom. After several minutes the Namekian broke through to the surface twelve feet away from the initial hole. Looking back at the trap Piyano noticed four children surrounded the pit armed with snowballs, all of them looking down in confusion about Piyano somehow escaping their trap. Still only half way free of his own claw dug tunnel Piyano quickly balled up some snow and picked off each child before they even knew what had hit them.
It took nearly a full hour for Piyano to clear out four more forts as the children of Jingle Village had planned out several more traps for Piyano. Everything from springing out of a fake snowman to setting one fort high up upon a hill had slowed down the Namekian's time as he tagged more and more kids out of the game. In the end there remained only one fort left, a fairly small little fort with a pink flag wafting in the morning breeze. Piyano knew the tiny white castle belonged to Katie and Jerry, which meant it was time for the Namek to learn what kind of weapon he smart child had devised this time. Currently thirty feet away from the fort Piyano began with a light jog, hoping to close the distance quickly, but without tiring himself out.
The man didn't get far before a trip wire felled him low. Collapsing face first into the snowy ground Piyano rolled to his right just before a snowball the size of three basketballs clobbered the ground he had fallen into. Staring at the impressively large ball Piyano looked back at the fort just in time to see a second ball come hurtling his way. Springing to his feet Piyano back flipped to avoid the huge ball, which shattered upon the ground angrily. Knowing he would have to move fast Piyano sprinted to the right again, his trail being followed by a meteor shower of large snowballs. Slowly making headway towards the fort Piyano realized he had fallen for another trap as his foot hit a patch of ice. Slipping upon the cleverly hosed than frozen ice bed Piyano spun and slide out of control until he collided into a deep bank of powder. Trapped in the bank Piyano happened to land on his back, meaning he could watch as another snowball descended out of the sky right for his position. With the bank pinning him down Piyano was left with little choice as he raise a arm into the air and fired a small KI blast into the ball. The tiny explosion sent lazy flakes of white down throughout the whole area as Piyano freed himself from the bank and reached his feet. "What did this little girl make?!" Piyano wondered aloud as he began running again. Less than fifteen feet away from the walls of the fort his time.
A shadow passing between Piyano and the sun was the only warning the Namekian had to dive to his left, another large snowball crashing down to the earth as he dodge aside. Sprinting the last remaining feet Piyano leap the wall to witness Katie frantically cranking a miniature catapult that sat upon a large flat gear. Each crank of the girl's arm rotated the impressive device, even as Jerry was busy loading a large snowball into the devices basket. Piyano landed his jump right before the home built catapult, Jerry screamed and turned to run at Piyano's sudden appearance, but his job was done by than. The catapult was loaded and ready. Katie had a completely different reaction to Piyano's landing, with fire burning in the girls eyes she quickly cranked her catapult two rotations and shouted a battle cry with a smile on her face. "FIRE!" she screamed and pulled a lever, the catapult rocked back and forth heavily as the launching arm flung forward with impressive speed. With little space to react Piyano turned his body to the side and through himself against the inner wall of the snow fort, the Namekian just barely felt snow from the large ball scrape against the tip of his ear as it rocketed past him.
"NO NO no!... I was supposed to win this time." Katie said in a grumpy fluster moments later as Piyano scraped up a handful of snow and dumped it on the child's head. Piyano just smiled as he chased after Jerry, "There's always next time!" he called back behind him as he ran the final child down and tossed a small snowball into the boys back.
The fifth great snow war finally concluded Piyano spent the rest of his day playing with the children and talking with the adults of Jingle Village. The fun filled day would stay within the Namekian's memories for years to come Piyano knew, and would only be replaced by the day Katie and her friends finally found a way to win.
End.
