Snow floated down from the overcast skies in lazy flurries. Thick, fat, flakes shaped like the most beautiful stars gently condensing in the air and falling over the great expanse that was the Cold North coating all the land in a fresh blanket of white frost. The storm had lasted all night long which Piyano knew from watching the soft flakes fall before he slept that night. Camped outside of North City the Namekian spent most of his time living in nature, he had little choice after all since he lacked the funding to buy or build a house. The lack of a home did not hamper Piyano's time on Earth however, his peoples thick skin and naturally hermit-like beliefs helped the alien to survive even in the frigid air of the north. Nestled beneath a evergreen tree with a campfire burning bright Piyano slept out the worst hours of the storm, before the green man closed his eyes however his gaze turned to the north. Thunder and lightning lit the skies over Jingle Village, a small settlement far in the distance. The worst of the weather would fall there Piyano knew, in his time on Earth he had began to learn the north's storm patterns.
Knowing their was little he could do about it tonight Piyano rolled his shoulders in a deep shrug and closed his eyes to rest. Sleep finally claimed him minutes later, even as more flakes began to fall. Hours later Piyano awoke to a fresh plain of unbroken snow, the evergreens branches sloped heavily under the weight of accumulated snowfall but the tree had done its job and kept most of the snow off of Piyano's body for the night. Crawling out from under his makeshift cover Piyano kicked snow over the burnt remains of his campfire, safety first after all. Sunlight shined down overhead as the morning turned out to be a lovely day, basking in the sunlight Piyano cupped his hands and scooped snow from the ground into his mouth. As a species Namekians only needed to consume water to live, snow was a interesting bridge for Piyano as a frozen water that he could 'eat' instead of drink.
Finishing up his early breakfast Piyano floated into the air and flew into North City. Piyano had been on Earth long enough now to know he would be sticking around a while, which meant he needed Zeni. Landing in the central town square Piyano walked the common place keeping his sharp ears out for signs of work. Even in the modern age jobs still needed to get done and day labors still got hired on. Piyano had recently been searching for such work, his higher degree of strength and ability to fly often made the tasks he was given easy for him. At least when compared to a untrained human. Piyano hit up all his usual contacts for any news on a job for the day, it took nearly two hours but finally Piyano found himself some work.
Last nights storm had hit North City pretty good, but Jingle Village had been decimated by the weather farther north. Three feet of snow had covered all the village streets overnight and the small town was radioing to every metro in the region to send help their way. North city was the closest to Jingle Village and was even now mobilizing plows out to the small settlement but with all the snow even North City had gained it would take time for people to arrive. Picking up a snow shovel from a nearby collection Piyano took to the air and yelled down to a man who had helped him to get work before. "Radio the village! Help will be there sooner than expected."
Flying through the skies Piyano knew he could reach the village in maybe twenty minutes of flight. Piyano had been up to the little place a few times bet never for very long, Jingle Village was a family settlement and though it was a peaceful little town it didn't really offer much in the way of activity or excitement. Clouds passed the green man by as he flew farther north, until finally Jingle Village came into view below or what was left of it at least. The village had never been large but with the snow trapping the land in a snow blanket everything just seemed smaller. The dome houses had snow crawling up their sides and caps of thick white coated the roofs and chimneys.
Floating down to the ground with his shovel in hand Piyano was greeted to the sight of several villages slowly shoveling walkways and sidewalks. The shovelers were very few and far between however, from the looks of things Jingle Village seemed to only possess seven or so shovels to its name. Three other villagers were over by a large plow truck, hood popped open and a woman wrist deep into the engine. Deciding that it was as good a place as any to start Piyano moved over to the trio working to repair their large plow. "Give her another rev Remy!" the woman shouted to her companion behind the wheel of the plow. The female mechanic was of a middling age, hair tied down under a thick wool cap, grease smearing her left cheek. The engine rev'd several times to no success, small pops and cracks escaped the motor, but it never kicked to life.
"Excuse me miss, I am here to offer your village assistance." Piyano said to the woman as a introduction, but the village woman didn't so much as turn around to nod at him. Instead she just gave Piyano a gruff thanks and sent him off to start shoveling snow with the few others that possessed shovels. Shrugging at the command Piyano lifted his shovel and went to join the others. Starting at the end of a long driveway Piyano sunk his shovel's blade into the frosty white and pressed forward. The shovel was a great tool for pushing, plowing, lifting, and carving the snowy field. Arm's bulging with green and pink muscle Piyano managed to clear the long driveway in only a hand full of minutes. The work was far from the hardest thing that Piyano had ever done but the sheer amount of snow that lay ahead of him began to give Piyano pause.
Thinking at first that there was nothing else to be done about it Piyano went on to clear out three other driveways, it took him slightly longer to clear a path each time and with more than two dozen driveways to go Piyano knew he would be at this all day. Even more looming was the village main road, a wide paved path that ran straight through the small community. Without the plow working clearing that road would take days to do by shovel. Sighing as he started his fourth driveway a loud cranking noise lead into a small explosion echoed from the trio working on the old plow truck. Everyone outside rushed over to the scene, the middle aged woman was holding her arm to her side, raw red flesh exposed from a bad burn. The truck engine had exploded into a gout of flames that engulfed the hood of the truck. Piyano and several other works quickly shoveled snow into the fires, putting out the flames with a harsh wet hiss.
When the flames died Piyano came up to the woman, her partner repair man standing by her side, the trio looked at Piyano oddly, as if unsure of his intentions but the green man calmly reached out and focused his KI into a soft wave of healing power. After a few minutes the woman's arm had been greatly restored, only a small rash remained of the burn. "T-Thank you." she stuttered as she looked over her arm in shock. Piyano simply nodded and walked off to assist the crew trying to salvage what they could from the plow truck. Little could truly be saved, but the plow itself was pulled off and remained intact.
Staring at the plow after Piyano and the group of workers had salvaged what they could. A idea came to him than, and at Piyano's behest the group helped him to set the plow blade up on one end of the road. As a group Piyano and the workers pushed the plow with all their might. inch by dreaded inch they forced the plow to cleave a swath of clean road through the snow. In only a few minutes every man was drenched in sweat and tears at the great effort. This included Piyano himself as the strain and weight of all the piled snow fought against the cause of Jingle Village freeing itself from winters icy grasp. The group pressed on however, late into the night, hard through the early morning. By the end each man had come to know and love those suffering beside them. Piyano himself felt as if he had gained a new family through the challenging ordeal, but by the groups sixteenth hour of pushing, piling, and cleaving through snow the main road through Jingle Village was finally clear.
Happily passing out from exhaustion along with everyone else Piyano awoke well into the evening the following day. He had crashed on the couch of a new friend, gained through the terrible night of heavy labor. Exiting his friends home Piyano wondered the cleaned up village for a time, until he stumbled across the female mechanic who had been leading the effort to clear the roads of snow. "I have to thank you Piyano, you being here helped us out quite a bit. We likely wouldn't even have been half way done by now without your assistance." the mechanic, a woman Piyano had learned was named Karen said to him in gratitude. Piyano could only smile his own thanks to the woman though. For the first time since leaving his own planet Piyano had felt a sense of community like he could find back home. Last nights trials had been a challenge, but they had also given the man something he had been missing out on lately. A sense of belonging.
After collecting his payment Piyano flew off into the night, thinking he would have to return to jingle Village a little more often in the near future.
End!!!
