The dim light overhanging blind me as tapping fingernails stir me from my dazed expression. Wait, where was I? Blinking some eyes and rubbing them with fists and take a look around, I got the full picture quickly. Small cubicle room, one desk, a few hovering seats, and one person in front of me. Ahh, okay. It's one of those rooms they hang the suspects up in. This woman, in strapping robes and authority garb was giving me icey looks with some teal eyes. Quiet. It had probably been a while since this fine interrogator asked a question last... was she still waiting on an answer to something? Had I completely forgotten something prior? Seems I tested her patience, with this impatient look also taking over her face. I couldn't help but shrug and twiddle my cuffed hands' thumbs together on the table. I decide to break the silence.
"So, uuuuh...-" Which didn't earn me anything but some squinted eyes and a shaking of the woman's head. Small eyeglasses were pushed up on her nose as she leans in closer across the desk. She wasn't the most intimidating doll around the block but she knows how to assert herself towards me. I leaned back in my seat in response, out of some ignorant fear. For the moment, I had totally forgotten why I was here. It was-.
"Mister Corium, I'm going to ask again. Why were there residue of chemical waste at the crime scene where you worked...?" Okay, maybe I should start us back a little ways. A few days ago, that's when that all started. I'm Doctor Corium. Work at a laboratory for material recycling and reuse in business sector C-011. Well, I say "doctor"... I'm a fresh student, just outside university. Have been intern at the lab for a while and just got my wings to finally work there. It has been smooth sailing, really. It wasn't a dream job or anything, but it was more than what I could ask for. A flexible schedule, a nice view from our workstations, and like minded people of multiple backgrounds and races together. Not for the most grandiose purpose here at HOME, but it's a small part that needed to be done. It's why I get up before my synthy alarm rose me from bed... Which I forget to turn off before it starts buzzing while I'm in the wash.
"To the blazes, shut up." It had been pinging me for a good several minutes while in the shower before I managed to towel up and put it back to sleep. My apartment was cozy. Fit me, my bed, drawers, my holovision screen on the wall, and all my little electronics and lab equipment in the corner with my desk. My Gem(tm) had a few messages on it as I checked and went about getting my work clothes and bite to eat. And, as always before heading out I like to get a good look of the whole living quarters sector. My HOME.
I was taking the CTZ that day, the finely tuned buses in the skies of our big ol' ship. Community TranZit, powered by designated fire elemi at the helm, completely fueled by their flaming warmth. Always meant they were a tad irked at just about every minor inconvenience so it was always best to just obey their personal and HOME-wide rules on using these services. Once caught an air sucker wind woman and their child taking up way too much room and the latter pouting the entire way. The driver was literally fuming half way through the ride. Today was a nice day though, so nothing really big on scene happened. I was taken from my living quarters in sector C and placed in the business sector. Was about a ten minute walk through more clustered buildings to find my lab.
The place,HOME, is actually smaller than I'm truly describing it. Estimated population growth is rather low but rising, and there's not many more than maybe a few dozen thousand who live on the main ship. Many researchers actually work off on one of the many satellite stations. I was a little bummed out to realize I couldn't progress further into chemistry and biology yet for that work, so I'd have to deal with public tranzit over and over again until I worked up. It'd be a chance to see the system a little better on the outsides and work intimately with my actual goal in mind.
Being in the Home World Reclamation Effort. I don't understand why they don't have a more condensed name. Though, I guess it's really not much worse than "Planet Trade Organization." Still, I had great hopes that maybe I could one day see the planet up close that everyone seemed to idolize and cherish. Call me a skeptic, because I never thought we'd need to be having our heads so far up into a dead planet while we had such a nice, habitable place like here. Heard it paid nice though and got you recognized.
"G'day, Cori." Gald, one of my friends from university, greeted me as always with little to no hesitation coming up and granting me a few pats on my shoulder. We're roughly working in the same area. A few of the older workers, both coming into work and just clocking out give me their nods and smiles. Per the usual with staff. I got to work in the plant and labs and was quite alright dealing with solutions to on board recycling and reuse of materials. Our main issue was always water, food byproducts, and biological waste (You know exactly what this means) with the occasional overhaul of spare and unusable building parts when construction got their hands on, well, constructing.
I do my work as I always do. Have a good work schedule, 8 hours a day for five days, always have weekends off. Can almost always request a day off and replace my off days with them. But today, some thirty or so minutes before I was meant to clock out of the plant, a noise was disturbing my concentration. I was busy mixing solvents together, trying to concoct a super acid that wouldn't tear through carbon-alloys. We get plenty of samples from the alchemy labs that using multiple sets of elemi volunteers to extract things like these acids, bases, and many other compounds. And now I just spilled some of that precious juice on the table. Wasn't instantly eating through it, but I did need to wipe it up.
"Do you hear that?" I grumbled a bit as I was cleaning. We, me and Gald, along with a few others worked in a station right next to large windows. Gald being the closest had a quick check outside.
"Just some more of them protesters. Blazes, someone get the authorities and make sure we are on lockdown." Right. There was a small group within HOME that openly despised the HWRE and wished the ship and all would just leave. Finding our intrusions unnecessary and worthless, we should better just focus on living here on this grandiose ship. That's the gist of this LEAVE movement, as they like calling it. But from what I've seen they get rambunctious and like to tamper with tech to hijack broadcasts and CTZs to make their point more wide spread. Usually, they were more a nuisance than anything, but for whatever reason these protesters were dangerously close to some of these buildings with their swords, lances, blasters and all. They weren't actually throwing anything, but they seemed threatening enough. And they had a clear reason why they were here. This WAS the science sector that worked with the HWRE rather closely. I came to the windows to take a look myself.
"I'll contact them right away." A smaller woman with shiny red crystal hair went on out to the halls and the sounds of quick feet fall was quickly halted just a bit outside the door. It was quick silence that fell as many of us turned to watch a slender man with purple eyes and draped in black came and had knocked the girl out quick. They had snuck in past security.
A certain amount of fear spread across all the scientists in the room, myself included. Whoever this man was, not only was he silent but he managed to deal with the other in a split second. He exuded a significant amount of power, far more than any of the petty protesters outside. Meanwhile, none of us were really trained combatants. Sure, Gald had some experience in using his power but... well, he was AU. Gold. So must of us were shit out of luck. Protocol didn't take into account warriors. Usually the guard dealt with those ones personally, and even if they sat by and obeyed the perpetrator, his actions were not really peaceful. He snapped the bijou girls neck right in front of us and came at us first. Silent, not even saying a word. He was there for one purpose.
It was all a blur then. Over half of my coworkers perished before we could make it to the doors, which Gald shut and sealed with his metallurgy. He just smashed on through and waltzed on over to some more of the staff whom heard now the commotion and went to pull alarms. With that all being signaled and the fussing turned into hollers and screams of panic, more of these figures popped out. They were assassins. They were here to kill. And me and Gal had to get out with whatever we could manage. And with whoever else we could manage it with.
"Exit window. We can get down to safety real quick from this floor!" I shouted and took lead down the other end of the hallways, Gald and others following right on behind. There were some gifted elemi around that tried keeping these monsters back at bay, but they were defeated and squished like bugs under the opposition. Suddenly, we could feel the presence of a build up of energy coming from behind us. We HAD to start taking the stairwell next to us! Quicker to point it out than I, Gald shouted over the chaos.
"STAIRWELL!" We both, along with others, tried pulling some away from the hallway ready to be blasted by rays of both fire and lightning. Booming through walls and shaking the entire building as we heard screams from the blast. Both guttural and shrieking. Oh Terra, the screams. It took me a moment to realize I was shaking in my boots from the realization. How close to death I was. I was tugged back into reality quick to being nearly dragged down the stairs. It wasn't too big a lab, but there were some layers to it. And from the sounds of things these assassins were EVERYWHERE inside. Seemed even the guards weren't on even footing with them. We passed by a floor or two and saw if ANYONE was standing up to them.
We got intercepted around the floor when a few of these black clad smashed through some stairs from the ground floor and assaulted us. I held my arms up over my face to defend myself against a shocking blast. I can remember that feeling, i felt like an electrical circuit was screwed into my arms. I howled along with others and was tossed back to the walls of the stairwell, thinking this was it. This was my time. But someone else was screaming with use in that moment. I was dazed for a good few seconds, but realized that the assailants, too, had been shocked. Gald, that son of a bitch made some metal and made sure they shocked themselves with that excess amount of energy they let out. Focusing it back into them far stronger than they let out.
I remember being picked up with a few others and went on to the second floor. Seemed the building had collapsed most of the stairwell below that. We all had to run to the exit windows again. Quick to try and get out of this mess. A lot of equipment was on this floor, so pathing a way among it and all the assassins now seeking survivors was hard. We had a group of a dozen or so with us trying to sneak on past without alerting. They could sense us though... They knew.
That's why they let us think we were going to be safe until we finally saw our way out. Jumped, again! This one dude, over a dozen people! A sword glowing green, cut through some in the front as we looked onward in horror. We fought, I tried throwing a punch at him. As did some of the others. I had my arm slashed and knocked out of place. Dislocated. I... everything gets fuzzy here. Most of us fall before I see Gald try tackling the man and weigh him down with his body turning fully to gold. I could only watch as he was gutted. As I was gutted. The light left my eyes and I sank to the ground, the last thing I felt being cold floor against my face and the warm blood underneath me.
I wasn't though. I woke up, pained and in anguish. I was out cold on the third floor, not the second. Having bled so much I was light headed, and all around me was green haze. It was dark in the now desolate area, and all I could see was the bodies of my dead coworkers. That... glowing green stuff, it was so much. I felt needles prick me, and I had no idea at the time it was my doing. It was agony to be around, I had to escape. it was the only thing on my mind.
That's right. I'm a bit of a toxic individual. Jokes aside, I quickly passed out again trying to exit the building. And you said the reports stated I was found in a coma, on the front steps of the facility.
The woman was sitting and listening to my rambling with a holopad in front of her. Taking notes of my recallings. Once I had finished explaining what I saw that day she was poking at her notes and frowning.
"That doesn't match up with findings. NO bodies of these supposed criminals were found, only the bodies of every single coworker in your building and the next, the radiation levels skyrocketing around the time you claimed to be working that day. Not even your recounts of the shocked ones your friend left you with. I will confirm however, yes, weaponry was used. We've yet to confirm if you've had any sort of arms." That's the problem though, I'm no fighter! I quickly situate myself, now knowing full well I wasn't in the wrong here. Coma must have knocked some of that good common sense out of me.
"Now hold on here, I'm no fighter. I'm the a blazing scientist! I didn't even know my powers were potent enough for... this." She was shaking her head and told me to hold on quite furiously, already convicting me of this crime in her head! This was hopeless, prosecuting me like this. I had this strange feeling in my head just now though... I knew other people were watching this conversation. I could somehow feel their presence behind a wall. A one-way window. I could feel this other man step on in now, taking a stand behind the woman and looking me up and down. He didn't seem as threatening as she was.
"Now now, let's entertain him. Let's say you didn't do this, Mister Corium, what reasons would any criminals have in killing ALL of the employees of several facilities? The job was too clean for conventional powers and weaponry." There was more to this than I could figure out just conversing with these people. I was mere a suspect. Maybe... just maybe there was a bigger picture.
"You tell me, aren't you the ones with most the information? I'm just-!..." Then it struck me. It was awfully coincidental that the attack happened as soon as the protesting from the LEAVE groups started coming in. I reeled back from my insulting just for now and held my cuffed hands up at them in apology.
"Wait, wait! Excuse me for getting ahead of myself... but, don't you think they could have been setting something up? SomeONE up? Some PEOPLE up?" The two looked at me funny. I was honestly just trying to rationalize why the second detective's question would make sense. it was a clean kill so there was no witnesses. Nobody to blame it on other than the loud protesters outside. Cori, this is why you got a doctorate by the skin of your teeth!
"You're suggesting that these nameless, unseen assassins were staging the protesters? Seems like an easy cop-out, considering you are suspected of working with LEAVE." Oh come on, I only skimmed a blog post or two, give me a break lady. This here is when the man cut back in, giving me a stern look over. In the shade, I hadn't quite seen his form before. But as he leaned in I started getting a full picture. Orange, medium cut hair. Beady citrus eyes, a jawline and collarbone that could kill women. And most importantly, dawning his robes rather than that tacky armor and producing a small flame from his fingertips to light up the room just that much more.
Oh stars above, it was Lord Ragnarok. What was he doing here, on a case like this? Yeah, it was a murder case, but he's a council member! Why on matteria did he-
"Excellent performance, my icy mistress. We got confirmation on my theory then. The professor kept his story straight, and it actually DOES match the protesters's claims. No, we don't actually believe LEAVE had anything to do with this. Well, not me and my sector leaders at least. The Authorities are going to be more or less be by the books with this one while we investigate this however." Did... Wait, did he just dupe me? Did SHE just dupe me? I look between the two of them with a very clear sign of confusion on my face. The icy lady cackles and leans over to put a hand on one of my cuffed hands, lowering it down to the table.
"Thanks, certainly Ragnarok. I'm always at your service." Her body language changed to a more calm and relaxed one, a sheer disjointedness from her initial actions around me. That really didn't help my confusion though, so I focus in on Ragnarok with a little 'huh?'. He was suppose to be away on Earth, what exactly was it that brought him here today?
"Look, I didn't come into this because I had any personal interest in any of the businesses, or victims and suspects involved. Despite being part of the HWRE... Which I suppose I am also obligated to check out, I could have easily just sent missus Gelida here to deal with it my absence. No, I was tipped off on something. Conspiracy." I didn't know what to say to that. A few words reahc up to my throat, but nothing really seems to escape me. I just blink at him and think on how I had guessed this before. The bigger picture. And he was willing to tell me all this because what, I was the sole survivor? I wasn't much better than any other whitecoat bum working in these fields. Without much more than confirmation by headnod from the big orange cheese himself, the woman reaches on over and release me of my bindings. This overwhelming sense of power overcame me. I felt something in my hands begin to radiate. As immediately as ever, Gelida shot some ice to cover said hands and made me freeze in place I didn't know it right then, but...
"The trauma awakened your inner power. It's why you coated the insides of the laboratory with uranium. I highly advise you learn to control yourself before we have to quarantine you with the building, heh." I was quick to try interjecting, the cold biting at my hand with each passing second. A dim green glow shone through though. I need to relax.
"How the-! Okay, okay... calm. I can do calm." I try to convince myself, but this felt like it was just pouring from me. I never had proper classes to control myself, as they've never really manifested before in this amount. Enough to mutate and kill. His words alone however, they gave me just what I need. Closing my eyes, I take in a deep breath. It felt like my muscles were constricting, but I would eventually see the glow fade within the ice. In fact, I was able to crack the ice underneath as I try and free myself.
"Boop." Gelida snaps and let the ice free my hands, which were now under my control. After a few more seconds, this constricting feeling finally stopped. I realize now that I was angry. I had let hatred for the perputrators into my head. I couldn't control myself after that, and didn't even realize it. I think they knew too.
"It's your first attempt at truly using your powers, huh? Even unwillingly. You let your emotions control them rather than you, however. That's the main focus in learning how to deal with them. Especially one as potent as yours. You're probably wondering why I'm so open with all this conspiracy talk, huh? I've told you all this because, well, now we've got to put you under HWRE's jurisdiction and care. Mine specifically. Because we can't have you moseying around with the potential to give radiation poisoning to half the populace because you had a bad day at work." There it was. At least is guaranteed I'd have a place, but sheesh. Didn't expect promotion to come from the death of my coworkers. Okay, it sounded less morbid in my head, alright? Geldi stood up next to Ragnarok, and I took my own as well with a roll of my shoulder.
"'Come with me if you want to live' sort of deal, huh? Well, what's the first order of business Lord Ragnarok, sir?" Gelida didn't appreciate my reference, but it seems to have caught on to Ragnarok as he snickers and nods. Arms behind back as he turns towards the door. Seems we were done in here then, I'd take a solid moment to take in some deep breaths to keep myself calm. This was simultaneously my best and worst day.
"We're going to introduce my sister to all of HOME, then let her work with us to make an example of this ploy in our ranks."
I had only vaguely heard rumors of this sister of Ragnarok's. it was the craze among fire elemi for a long time, and some of the higher ups from what news outlets have said remarked on an incredibly gifted, Earthling raised elemi. Able to throw motes of flame at armies and talk down to gods. I always thought the exaggerations were just that; Exaggerations. I suppose this was going to be a ceremonious thing from the sounds of it though. The three of us headed on out through the sprawling halls of the central hub sector this law and order style room was all about. The place was heavy on the law enforcement. The spaceport and foreign access were located around here, so not too big a surprise. Compared to the more homely surroundings of the living and business sectors, this central hub was more industrial in its design and efficiency of space.
"You'll be meeting more family than just my sister, doctor. I'm sure you know of Vitalerra. Smart girl." The audacious flame attempted some small talk as we were walking up, but honestly? I was still uncomfortable being so casual around such people of high standing. Suppose I'll get used to it eventually. To distract myself, I'll look around at the many ships at the port. Since we have some rather tight foreign laws here on HOME, they're mostly ours. We sometimes borrow the wise minds of alien scientists, but with all the destroying happening with several of the large factions out at space... yeah. Hold that thought though, someone's breaching the force field. That's probably them alright.
"Gelida, please do see to commandeering the vessel for the mean time." He shot off some commands to the icy woman who quickly took closer to the landing ship. Being the first to watch several members that I couldn't recognize pop out first. After this initial wave, the woman set on in. Ragnarok took some steps towards the ramp, and so did I. Step for step to keep up appearances. After the crew had passed us on by, two individuals of otherworldly colors came off the ramps. A young woman with curled, poofy green hair and teal skin. She was rather cute and had a glint of intrigue in her eye as we exchanged glances. Was I staring a little too long? The other... whoa, she's got an interesting get up. A chocolate skin, with deep red eyes and red and black clothing. Skin tight, with a jacket covering herself. She took gave me a look when I stared a little too long. They probably thought I was an idiot when I just cowered out of the glance. Oh, terra crackers!
"Father!" The teal one leap forward with a hug- wait, THIS was Vitalerra? Damn, the resemblance wasn't all too great. Here, I got to see first hand how different we as a species develop when we're among other groups and races. The darker one smirked and slapped Ragnarok hard on the shoulder. So hard that I could FEEL that. I blinked, and must have got caught doing so cause she also reeled me into slapping one of MY shoulders! I was nearly drug to the ground from it, having to wobble in place and steady myself.
"Hey, Careful!" I warn her with a grimace, but there she was. Smirking away. With a snort behind us, she actually opened her prettied up mouth to speak. I will never forget that accent and jargon used. Was Earth some backwater planet? It painfully reminds me of Gald. He also came from another planet, and picked up that accent from being raised there. Not that there was anything wrong with that, but that's still a fresh wound.
"Well, I'm here. Ya' sayin' we had some sort of grandstandin' I had to do? Well, hurry it on up and let's get crackin'. I'd like to get this on over with and head back home as quickly as possible. Auntie'll have my head." They exchanged these pats and show of affection a little more, to my cringe, and the tall orange haired one turned and pointed at me with a laugh after he'd release his daughter.
"Flare, Vitalerra. This is my new agent. Doctor Corium. Doctor, this is my sister and daughter respectively." He'd point them out to me, but I had already figured that. Still down to being polite with the guests though I'd smile and bow. Something the three of them didn't seem to really care for, but it was what I was used to. Just how unorthodox was Lord Ragnarok? After this all went down, we all seemed rather quick to step out of the space port, the ship taking off as instructed by the audacious flame. In the time it took for us to clear the area and head towards ceremony stands in the central hub, I really couldn't tell much special about this candle wick of a foreign elemi.
The HOME intercoms went on off to announce to us all that the ceremony broadcast was to go off in fifteen minutes. As we set all the cameras and crew up. They were compliant, so they very much had a head up by a few days they were to be here. Did I mention, i don't really like being in front of cameras? Once everything was ready to start, I felt myself stiffen. Lights in our faces, I can't help but squint up in my place and hold a hand up to block of this harshness for a short while. The teal skinned woman swats my hand down and tried holding it down there. Ohhh?
"Good stellar evening, my people. Bijou and Elemi alike, I have great news. A show before the council. But before I go before them-. I, Ragnarok, would like her to present herself before us all as a powerful warrior and willing beacon for our people." Something tells me right off this Flare, a young flame by her disposition, wasn't all that camera shy. Or knew even how to address one proper. She takes one step too close to the camera and has this clear smile on her face from what the monitor screens had to say. Ragnarok manages to pull her that step back again before she started blabbering.
"Sup. It's Flare. I was told ya'll never seen a Super Elemi with your own eyes?" Wait what. Vitalerra was still holding onto my hand, and Ragnarok told the cameras to make sure everyone was in a safe area for this. FOR WHAT?
I found out real quick. Even being several feet off to the side, I could feel this sudden burst of energy. Flare had taken to wreathing herself in a flame. And her hair it stood and turned to fire! Billowing, I could almost not stand around her. And this blighted heat, I felt my skin scalding for just a moment. And just that, seems the young flame had enough control to keep that fire's heat contained enough to not melt us all. From the corner of my eyes I could see a camera crewman brought to his knees, and another coming up closer. Like she was praising this transformation. This Super Elemi. Super Elemi. Ahh, right. That was a topic I had only glossed over in university. There's not much on it, and it's been stated there are only a few now. Before a year or so ago it was just the council head that bore a name to such a change. Xenon, that one. If I recall correctly, he makes all shots in the council at the end of the day.
Where was I? Oh, right, the broadcast. Roars of praise from the return signal clouded out most any other activity on HOME. By Terra was this some coronation?

Heya Flare, So from now on, we will try to keep it to just one post, and separate it with the line break tag.
That being said... breaking it up did make it easier for me to read >_> and I was a little thrown off at first since it ins't actually your character... but seing as how your allies are heavily involved, and mentions in the end. I'll accept this great story
Flare After some discussion, your gains for this thread amounts to 9,264. The odds of a flat 19k was too low to have been right, and the reasons for it was tracked down to correct this.
