"Eh?! Well um… nowhere! I haven't got a credible source of information on that. It's just that I know Saiyans can fight for days without rest. So I assumed that stamina was applied to other activities too… um…er… I'd that's not how it works then I'm sorry! I didn't mean to imply you're a wild animal when it comes to… GAHHH!"
Demalia waved her hands frantically, a mortified look on her now beet red face. This was the last time she would make an assumption this out there! Fortunately this awkward moment wouldn't last for too long. She took a deep breath before elaborating on her race's culture
"Every five years we have an event called the Technocrat games, where the best minds of the Tuffles come together and compete against one another for the title of the smartest Tuffle. We pride intelligence above all else, so the winner of the Technocrat games becomes our leader."
It probably would seem strange to a foreigner. Something that important being decided in that manner. But that’s how it had been done for years now, and they were one of the most prosperous races in the Galaxy.
“The winning Tuffle is crowned as the Technocrat, the ruler of our race. The smartest is the best suited for leading our people. The next Technocrat games start in a week from now. I know I’ll sound arrogant here, but if I successfully perform the operation and mechanize myself while keeping my flesh and blood abilities, I’m going to win the competition. It’s a breakthrough that far exceeds the Zed processor that won the last games. And that was a revolutionary piece of equipment that took our AI to an incredible level of efficiency.”
Demalia linked her fingers, pressing down against her skin with her fingertips. Demalia had a literal arsenal of behavioral ticks that were manufactured by her nerves. This was one of the more serious ones, especially when paired with the fact that Demalia was avoiding eye contact with Rutaba and staring at her feet.
“I… I want to make the universe a place where everyone can live in peace. I want to eliminate poverty, starvation, disease… anything that can lead to an unnatural death. We have the technology to do this, and I’ll find ways to improve it further. We’ve just um… kept to ourselves all this time. We can’t continue to be this self involved. I want everyone to live happily, to prevent them from suffering the way we did.”
Demalia closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She felt more nervous then she ever had in her life. What she was going to ask of Rutaba required her to explain her reasoning up front. It wasn’t something she could just dump on him. The longer she waited to ask him though, the more nerve racking things became.
“The problem is that I’m going to have to try and accomplish these goals on my own. Normally the Technocrat gets valuable help from the experienced politicians they surround themselves with. But we’re very stingy about how we share our technology. No one will support me in my efforts to make it as easily accessible it has to be in order for my dream to be realized. Other planets will resist change too: the Brenchians in particular will make things difficult, since they’re our main competitors on the open market.”
The galactic community was a complicated machine. Everything was intertwined tightly together. There were so many gears that moved everything that even effecting one would throw the machine off balance. And that’s exactly what she had to do.
“I… I need someone to help me. Somebody that I can trust completely. I need this person to always stick by my side. They need to be there to give me advice in critical situations, to help me regain my footing whenever I take a misstep. An ally who has the resolve to walk down the long, difficult path, who is willing to spend years chasing this dream.”
Demalia opened her eyes, raising her head and staring into Rutaba’s own. She moved her interlocked hands in front of her chest. She seemed to be making some kind of prayer. She certainly did hope that she could find the courage to express what she had to.
“Rutaba… I want you to leave Sadal and come live with me on Plant. We’ll be apart for long periods of time if I become the Technocrat. Besides… when I’m with you… I feel that no matter what’s thrown at me, things will work out.”
Demalia took a few steps forward, stopping when she was a couple of feet in front of the Saiyan. Rutaba would be able to see that her body was trembling ever so slightly. Despite her nervousness though, her violet eyes burned brightly with determination. She wasn’t going to let her faults get in the way, not this time.
“I’m sorry for dropping this on you so suddenly. You don’t have to answer me right away, and I won’t resent you if you say no. I know how much being a part of the defense force means to you. You want to continue the work and ideals that your fallen comrades believe in. But I’m sure that we both can do a lot more good if we stay together. I want there to come a day when people don’t have to worry about losing their loved ones in horrible ways. Rutaba… will you see this through and help me realize this dream?”
A gust of wind blue through the garden, causing Demanla’s raven colored hair to sway in the breeze. Cherry blossoms and flower petals flew through the air around them. Admis it all Demalia remained firm, the fire in her eyes showing no signs of dimming. She and Rutaba both knew the pain of loss. Demalia had sworn to lessen and eventually get rid of this kind of pain. No one deserved suffering through the tragedy of the lives of those they cared about being cut short.
It didn't take too long for Demalia to begin her more in depth explanation of exactly what the Technocrat was all about. While it seemed a bit weird to hold some sort of competition to become leader, he understood the meaning of making the smartest Tuffle the leader given the society they had. Knowing that the games were so soon... and that furthermore, she was most likely going to win if she succeeded in her operation, it was kind of obvious what she was planning to do. Somewhat like he had a goal to become a leader himself, she was aiming to be the next leader of Plant in just a week. This was an incredibly short notice.
Rutaba's eyes followed the Tuffle's movements as she seemed oh so nervous. All he could do for the time being was watch her intently as she explained everything. It was a nice aspiration to want to make the universe a peaceful place. Her means to do so sounded extremely... passive, fighting the more technical side of death and a lack of peace. It was the same side of the coin that he desired to combat. He wanted to lead Peacekeepers that tried to stop the universe from personal conflict, where she wanted to combat countless other worries that plague the day to day life of everyone.
Then the big kicker came in. Even if she was the major leader of her people, the others weren't going to follow along with her ideas so openly. She said she'd be alone in that endeavor... and from a political point of view, that was probably right. He wasn't too intimate with many politics either, but the feud between Brenchians and Tuffles was well known enough for him to see what she had problems with.
Moving on, she started to talk about her needs of a close ally. And as much as he felt like he shouldn't be the answer in this case, he knew why he was being told so directly about all of this. He was already supporting her with all of the dreams he could... and now she wanted his support here as well. But it didn't come without a catch as she'd then explain the caveat with all of this. It was explained so directly to him but that was probably for the best. She got so close to him to explain more about it... and he couldn't help but look off to the side for a moment to not meet her eyes as he stood silent in thought.
As she finally finished speaking, he'd look back towards her to see that spark of determination in her eyes that caught him so strongly in the first place. He couldn't help but give a soft smile in regards to that but he was still so torn.
"I... can't give you the most definitive answer. Not now, not so suddenly. It's been my dream from such a young age to become the next Saiyan King, the Commander of the Defense Force. To not only disregard that dream... but also leave the very force it's apart of? As well as my home? It's asking so much..." he'd put his hand on the back of his head to ruffle his own hair obviously a bit torn still. What was there to even say? He knew that he mostly wanted to be the Saiyan King so that he could lead the Defense Force well and become a universal contender for peace. She was offering him essentially the same position here. It was mostly down to leaving the Defense Force... but what was back there anyways? It was his people... but nobody he really needed to be around for. All signs pointed to this being his best option... he'd get to be with Demalia always and possibly still hold onto his dream just slightly changed.
"I would definitely like some more time. At least to make sure I am confident in everything. But I will tell you that I.... do believe that this is a good idea. I just would like some clarification on some things. If I may?" he'd pause for a moment to gather himself mentally. What did he even want to ask of her in such a situation? She was going to be the equivalent of a Queen here, a leader. He was more or less sold on her side of this whole deal... but he had so many things he wanted to do still.
"If I go through with this... alongside you becoming Technocrat, what exactly am I going to be doing with myself? I really don't mind sticking with you every step of the way... giving advice where needed and trying to be there as support. But I suppose I... just can't see myself stopping peacekeeping or working as a soldier." Rutaba sighed as he finished speaking. He didn't even know how the Tuffle's defenses worked, or if they even kept a proper military around. And even further than that, would the Tuffles even allow some random Saiyan to work with them? And in the case that none of the above worked out... could he even start something on his own? He was a bit worried about the future of his base desires to work as a defender of peace. But perhaps if there was something to keep him occupied working with her, it wouldn't be so bad. WC: 905 TWC: 6563
Demalia gave Rutaba an understanding look. She had expected that he was going to need time to make his mind up about this monumental decision. And she wasn’t going to rush him into making that decision. If he came over then she wanted it to be on his own terms by his own free will. If anything she was surprised that he was being as receptive as he was to the idea. She was sure he would reject her proposal on the spot. She listened to the concerns that she had with bated breath. To her relief, it was a simple question about his role when he was with her.
“You can be whatever you want to be Rutaba. If I become the Technocrat, then I’ll be able to fit you in where you think would be best for you. I expect you’ll remain a peacekeeper in at least some capacity. I can see you training my fellow Tuffles how to defend themselves. We aren’t naturally strong on our own. We’ll figure things out as we go forward Rutaba: the sky 's the limit. I think that’s the saying. I’m not exactly that well versed in that kind of lingo… heh...”
Demalia gave the Saiyan the best reassuring smile she could. She wanted to make him feel as comfortable as she could. She was sure that they would be able to make things work if she became the Technocrat, but she couldn’t guarantee things to herself, let alone to Rutaba. Who knew what the future would have in store for them?
A sigh of relief was about the best thing that could describe what Rutaba did as told him that he could do whatever he wanted. "That's definitely a good start. I was worried that maybe the politicians who might be against your own goals would hold too much sway to allow me to do anything. But if they can't impede me... or wouldn't even want to, that'd certainly be good enough." he'd cross his arms a bit in thought as he spoke, but he certainly sounded a lot less concerned.
She brought up training other Tuffles how to defend themselves... and all he could think about was their few training sessions together since they met. Doing something like that full time could be both fun and helpful. Both for himself and those who wished to receive training. That was why Demalia was the intelligent one here going to become a Technocrat in the near future. At least he fully believed she would ace it. Besides, she said so herself.
"In any case. I am definitely warm to this idea... though I'll still think on it for some time. I'll try to have my answer for you by the time these Technocrat Games conclude. And I'll support you no matter the outcome." he'd look down for a moment as he spoke. There were literally no downsides to choosing this path... so why was he torn so much? Perhaps everything being flipped on his head was leaving him a little shellshocked and he just had to get over to it. But the more that they spoke together, the more he liked the idea of spending every day with her on this planet.
"There is one more thing I need to discuss with you. Regardless of my final answer, I will need to head back to Sadal for official business. I can't just quit from here and never return there, there's too much that I need to go clear up and do for myself over there. I'll make sure to head back at a more beneficial time for you... so that I don't leave you emptyhanded at a time where you need me most. But just... as a warning so that you know that I will be gone." he'd speak with a bit of a sorrowful heart. He didn't really want to leave her side, and that alone was probably a major part of what made him want to agree to her proposition. For now, he just had to see what she'd think of it, or if she had any more to say. WC: 430 TWC: 6,993
Demalia gave her boyfriend a small smile. “That position isn’t as timid as I am. If it was completely controlled by other politicians then I wouldn’t be aiming for Technocrat in the first place. You’ll be able to do what you both need and want to accomplish.”
Demalia let out a soft sigh, pulling out a chair and sitting down in front of the meal she had put together. She interlocked her fingers, looking over at Rutaba with a forlorn look on her face. She was glad that he was taking the time to settle his affairs. The way this was going, it seemed all but certain he would eventually live here with her. As much as she loved the thought of that, she felt a tinge of guilt putting a decision like this onto him.
“I understand Rutaba. I expected you to settle all the legal ramifications on Sadal. I’m not a. Duel tyrant who will pull you away from your home on my whims. I’m going to miss you while you’re gone though.”
Demalia had a forelorn look on her face. It probably wouldn’t be for very long. But it was clear that she had become very fond of the Saiyan. Being separated from him for any period of time was going to be hard for her.
“Well, we should make the most of our time together. Let’s start by eating our food before it gets cold.”
Demalia was going to have to kick some of her training plans and her scenic showing of Plant into overdrive. Every moment with Rutaba was precious. She was going to savor things for as long as she could before he had to go back to his homeworld.
Seeing Demalia move to sit in a chair, Rutaba moved to do the same, making sure he was seated right across from her so they could stare directly at one another without any issues. The look upon his girlfriend's face was all too obvious, causing him to look a bit worried until she responded. He supposed that there was no other way she should really feel. Rutaba's lips curled into a smile as he rested his head upon a hand. "I know... I'll miss you too but I promise I'll be gone for as little as possible. And I'll try to keep up via scouter as well, just so you don't forget my voice, okay?" he'd speak seriously before going a bit more teasing as he doubted she'd forget him or his voice just because he went to Sadal.
Still, the obvious look on her face was hard to pass on, and he knew that the moment he left the planet he would feel the exact same way. The only reason he wasn't too worried just yet was because he was living in the now. All of it was still so blissful to him, he had no reason to be sad just yet over the future.
"You're right, I was so happy with everything thus far that I forgot to eat. You made this for me so I can't pass it up!" his Saiyan side showing more, Rutaba would beam with a bit more happiness. He didn't want to think of anything sad to bring himself down at the moment. He wanted to hold onto every shred of happiness possible. With that heavily in his mind, Rutaba started to indulge in the Miso Soup that Demalia had made for the two of them. It was absolutely everything he dreamed of when it came to a meal prepared by his significant other, and all of it showed on his face as he made sure to respectfully eat and not let any Saiyan gluttony show at the time.
Due to the slower pace of his eating, he'd start speaking once more to not let their conversation die down entirely. "So... about these Technocrat Games we were talking about. Aside from just watching over you while you undergo your operation, is there any way I can help you prepare for them? I'd feel bad not giving it my all if this is the future set before the both of us." he'd speak in a very serious tone as he looked over at Demalia, sounding rather determined to assist her further. Demalia smiled softly at her boyfriend. “That’s reassuring to hear. I have a short term memory sometimes. I’m going to have to be reminded on what you sound like every day.”
Demalia didn’t eat too much of her own food. She spent the majority of the time watching Rutaba eat his food. She didn’t understand where Saiyans got the knack of being undisciplined gluttanists: she didn’t see any of it in Rutaba’s behavior. He didn’t even need to compliment it to express how much he enjoyed the meal. She leaned forward slightly, etching the image of his contentment to memory. She scratched her cheek when he brought up what he could do to help her with the Technocrat games.
“Um… well… you can help me test the equipment I’m going to use before I install it into my body. If it can stand up to you, then it will be able to handle any kind of testing it’s put through in the games.”
Rutaba stared on at Demalia as she explained a bit of what he could do for her. It was simple... but he didn't mind it. He supposed that there was no way for someone like him to help during the actual games meant for deciding a victor. It would be like cheating anyways. That wasn't to say that he wasn't interested in her actual proposition of what he could do, though.
"You know, I've wanted to test my own mettle as well as of late. I've gotten so much stronger since I've met you but I haven't had a chance to test myself going all out. It'd be an excellent way to give myself a workout and test your equipment, win-win!" he'd beam as he commented on her idea. It was definitely something he'd like to do if given the opportunity. Though of course, he'd allow her to test it out after she installed it too if her body wasn't worn out from the procedure.
Seeing his question answered, Rutaba returned to and remained relatively quiet for the rest of his meal. He made sure to savor it so as to not be disrespectful to Demalia and her cooking she made for him. After all, what use would it be if he vaporized the entire meal in under a second? As happy as his stomach would be if his mouth opened wide and consumed the entire soup, bowl and all, it just wasn't right.
With the food out of the way the Saiyan now quite the happy camper with his stomach sated and having such a nice day with his girlfriend, Rutaba sat back in his chair to stare at his girlfriend once more with a smile. He didn't want to just leave now that his side of the meal was done, so instead, he opted to sit with her like this so they could talk more. "I'm really glad that I was able to have a taste of your cooking, and I'm happy that I came here to Plant with you. I'm good to move on to whatever you have planned next whenever you are done." Rutaba spoke softly, smiling and watching Demalia as he sat by in a relaxing position. He was in no rush to leave that spot any time soon, he was going to be patient about this. WC: 392 TWC: 7,812
"Um… I'm glad to see that you're looking forward to testing your mettle against my equipment. I figured you would like that. Um… That's why I also planned what we would do after you tested things out. I'm sure you'll enjoy that too…"
Demalia pressed her fingers together. In truth it was something she had thought up a few minutes ago, when Rutaba had first brought up testing the equipment. It was something Demalia wouldn't have even though about doing with Rutaba before. But they were getting a little bit closer, so she could take him out to a relaxing day after they got done testing the equipment.
Demalia was silent during her meal along with Rutaba. There was the soft clinking of the silverware against the serene environment around them. She was about half finished with her meal. She blushed lightly, giving Rutaba a smile.
"It's the least I could do for you Rutaba. I was tired of just cooking meals to myself and it was really nice to cook for someone else. I'm glad you think I didn't overdo things."
They talked a little while longer before Demalia took out Rutaba for a little more sightseeing. She also insisted on visiting a couple of shops at the Tuffle equivalent of a shopping center. All in all, a very good start to things.
